As a life long volvo fan this brought a tear to my eye. The car my parents drove me home from the hospital in after I was first born was a volvo 360. As was the first car I done any work on, was a volvo 240 turbo (age 3, changed a head light bulb - my Dad told me how to do it and he done the dangerous bits). The first car I drove was a volvo 740 turbo. Next year I will get my driving licence and hope to buy a volvo (unfortunately however after looking at quotes for not only volvo's but various other cars, I've learned insurance companies - for some obscure, sick reason - tend to charge young driver more for a safe car than they would a shitty little death trap. *Cough cough, 1998 vauxhall corsa*). But regardless of cost (even if I have to hold back a year or two), my first car will be a volvo. As will the first car my children will be on, and so on...
That was a beautiful story, and I hope you got your Volvo now after 4 years :) I myself am going around in a Volvo V70 from 1997. Beautiful masterpiece of engineering and mechanics.
My grandma has had only volvos her entire life. she's on her ninth right now and 2 of those 9 have been totaled, from a head on collision and hitting a bull moose in northern NH. both crashes she had only a few scratches and bruises. volvo makes amazing cars and if you care for your safety I highly suggest a Volvo because I believe if she was in any other car it could've turned out very differently.
Very well done. Volvo is probably the only manufacturer that didn't get less than perfect marks in 2013 when the small overlap first came out. Almost everyone either failed or marginally passed, Volvo did it with flying colors on day 1.
I know. It's amazing that they built such a safe vehicle that wasn't redesigned to pass this test. It shows that Volvo thinks ahead. I watched a documentary about Volvo, and apparently they send investigators out to research every crash in which a person died in a Volvo vehicle. That's dedication.
+Trades46 not only that but the xc90 they tested in the small overlap CAME OUT IN 2003!!!! And passed with flying colors and no design modifications. Cars that came out last year failed the test, and Volvo passed with freakin 10 year old car!
That's what I wanted my sis to get, but she opted for the Tiquan. Overall, German, and Volvo vehicles have a level of solidity missing from other manufacturers.
Basar. T yes Scoring an outstanding 97% for adult occupant protection, along with 87% for child occupants ensures the Volvo does its best to keep people inside of the vehicle safe. ... Overall, the Volvo XC90 makes for the safest family car on the road today. Yassssssss
I have a 2010 XC60. It is a superb car. Extremely comfortable, lots of storage space and elegant styling. Very reliable after 4 years of ownership. My other Volvos a previously owned V70 and a current S60 are also very reliable. Volvos are great cars and compared to their German counterparts, a complete bargain in the US. Much cheaper to service too.
Yes, I agree. Volvo's are less expensive to maintain than Jaguars or Mercedes. My very old 760GLE has close to 400,00kms on it and the engine has never had any repairs. I service it once per year, regardless of kms.I had also survived a minor bump with a Kangaroo and sheep with no body damage.
Remember the TV ads in which Volvo stacked their cars 14 high with no passenger compartment deflection. I am alive due to one of my Volvo's doing what it should have done in a crash with a big Pantechnicon truck.
This is why I bought a 2k8 S80-T6 AWD because I drove my step moms XC60 T6 love it and to protect my family!!! My Dad has owned four volvos 72 164E,75 240DL,84 242 DL,1996 850 GLT and my step mother 2 {2k11 and 2k14} XC60 T6 AWD's.
IIHS's small overlap test, like the one shown in the video, is conducted at 40 mph, according to iihs.org. One thing to keep in mind though, is that in this test, only 25% of the vehicle's front crumple zones must do all the work of absorbing the crash energy. In the majority of other frontal crash tests, at least 40% of the front of the vehicle collides with a crushable barrier. In this test 25% of the front of the vehicle collides with a rigid barrier. This is an extremely challenging test.
daaamn, i was watching at 5:05 when that music started, and i knew that song from somewhere... then i realized it's a sample that Xzibit used in his song "paparazzi" ! :)
It just makes sense to drive a Volvo. Reliability, safety, quality, luxury, simplicity, technologic. People who drive Volvos know what they're doing with they're finances and care for their family. I've been driving my last Volvo for years and since put over 200k carefree miles on it until my wreck in 2011. I will never drive anything else.
Swedish car - all the credit for Volvo's safety goes to the manufacturer - Its true it has recently been bought by Geely but that does not make it a Chinese car - since they bought Volvo..Chinese car safety performance has mysteriously improved... I wonder why..
'This was a legal way most of the time it isn't.' Kindly explain how this time 'it's legal'.. whilst most of the time..it's not? Actually the question is not 'is it legal'.?. but 'Is it ethical'.. i.e.- Is it good business practice..when you take the hard work and research and investment time and dollars of one company that are experts in the business and sincere in improving car safety for the sakes of less deaths and serious injuries on the roads and simply buy it all because you're flush with money to improve your own sales figures, and because you have failed miserably at producing safe cars without any concern for the ethos and principles of that company..?? I think this is just 'new money' buying up and benefiting itself for sheer financial gain without doing any of the hard work for it and having invested NOTHING in the company's ethos. Legal..maybe..Ethical..never. Cheap trick really, cheap trick.
THIS VIDEO WAS SOOOOO INTERESTING!! I HAVE A VOLVO AND REALLY GLAD I DO !! The video in slow motion was awesome!!! Thank you motor trend for putting all this light on the subject!!
if you ever witness a real ( live , in person ) overlap crash , the result are not the same as this people in a control lab is trying to learn , 2 vehicles are involve, the sound is unforgettable , the damage is 10 worst , one car got on fire and their groceries flew everywhere , I was hit by a can of tomatoes , even when I was walking about 100 feet from the epicenter !
We had a 1993 Volvo 850 for awhile, it was almost 20 years old, had 200,000 miles and hadn't been maintained so it ran pretty rough but it was by far the most solidly built car I have ever driven and it handled pretty awesome as well. I'm sure it wasn't as good as these newer Volvos of course but I'm willing to bet it would fair better than some other new cars.
Just bought a '13 C30 Friday & it's great! It's going to be a weekend car for me now & will be my oldest daughter's 1st car once it's paid off & she's of driving age. We have bought several Hondas over the past 9 years including a Pilot last March but when I thought about my little girl driving I knew we had to break the chain & go for the safest car.
One reason I could see why it did so well was during the collision the whole car deflects away from the wall so that relative to the car, the wall is moving laterally away from the dummy. Kudos to you Vovlo.
The lower part did extremely well. It has almost no intrusion into the leg area. It held up better than almost any other vehicle. You can see the pics here: www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/volvo/xc60-4-door-suv/2015
+m4rs12 Yeah, Volvo's are like the safest cars on the planet. The Volvo XC90 from 2003 gets a good rating in the Small Overlap crash test with almost no intrusion as well. FROM 2003!!! Pretty impressive. Check it on the IIHS website.
+Greg O'Brien you do realize being a good driver, doesn't protect you from this crash, right? It could happen to anyone in variety of different circumstances.
+Greg O'Brien you do relize if everyone thought like you there would be more deaths on the road. we would still be driving cars without airbags. these saftey systems are designed to assist you in case u make a mistake and crash.
+Matas Eitminavicius i work on roads, and the amount of drivers that i see looking at their phones or relying on their cars safety features is scary, ok people make mistakes but driving a car should be no1 priority , that means watching for other drivers intentions, hazards and anything that could be a potential accident waiting to happen
Quick note: I want to thank you for inspiring me to re-run the sim again. Just found out that if I run it through cygwin instead of the GUI launcher, it results in a forrtl: severe (47). So something must have gotten messed up in the system settings or something that broke it. But if I try to run it from cmd, it's running fine. So it's been nice chatting with you, but I'm afraid I'll hafta leave ya to go deal w/ this. Thanks once again 4 inspiring me. Without u, I wouldn't have discovered this.
This was a very well done video, just plain excellent! Congratulations Volvo! This has just got to be nerve racking and excruciating for the manufacturers and testers. It is so good that Volvo reps were there taking an interest and working in what appeared to be in a collaborative way.. Good work all!
My first car was an 2004 s40, bought second hand in 2018. Never had any problem in 4 years with the s40 (apart some light issues, but nothing big or serious), Now is 200000km and it still runs perfect (some rubbers need to be change in suspension, but nothing unpredictable). Today I bought an XC60 2013, lets see if I maintain the level of reliability!
Great video! WOT reminded me to watch this video when Kim Reynolds mentioned it. While watching it, I was drawn into the quality of the entire episode. It is clear why the executive producer's name is last. Your names are first because you rock at making videos.
Charlie I got tee boned on the left front door and a pillar at about 70k's by another 4wd. it had more damage than my xc60. the front left door opened as normal and no intrusion into the cabin. the other cars door required a bit of effort and looked like it hit a pole ive got another xc60 now.
you make valid points that i overlooked. they need to has a head on test with a wall of sorts that structurally compresses in a way that would mimic that of another vehicle. I also think there should be a crash test that is standard that has to be done at 55 mph.
I've already read them. But letting you run with the assumption that I haven't is just too much fun. Watching you get all riled up cuz you get so riled up so easily. Trés amusant.
I think they are looking at specific crash results and testings. They might have taken it out so they can see the what the head does in its forward motion upon the impact. In this test, the head rest simply might not be a constant they are considering in this test.
The new Subaru Forester and Volvo XC60 are the only two small overlap tests I've seen out of new small SUVs today where the driver door stays intact and barely bends. Looking at reviews the XC60 is overall a fantastic car and I see now why Volvo has been called the safest brand. They were making small overlap crashes safe for their customers before IIHS made it a mandatory crash test. Even luxury BMW failed. Think we'll be getting out of the CR-V for this one
And you want to be able to model the shearing effect. Would you use Jacobian as your element failure metric or would you go based off of material property limits? Do u HAVE 2 delete the failed elements or can you make the program automatically duplicate the nodes and then detach itself from the rest of the mesh assembly? (We actually had to do that for DoE/USCAR BTW. That was my 123-page dissertation.) But since it's so easy, I'm sure that you'll be able to tell me what I SHOULD'VE done instead.
There is a lot of pre-production computer aided design and testing to see in principal if the structure is sound long before any metal is formed. Vehicles are then tested extensively throughout the prototype stage so by the time a production model is submitted to an independent body for testing the manufacturer knows it's the best it can be for the budget. Using a computer model exclusively would be problematic due to the number of variables, but they do give manufacturers a decent bench mark.
That's because NHTSA's 55 mph SOMDB crash test isn't released to the public in the FR yet (to be implemented in 49 CFR 571.200-series.) Note also that IIHS is NOT a federal NCAP requirement, but SOME companies do it on SOME cars anyways irrespective of that. And they work and engineer and develop their car to pass the SORB crash test anyways.
My thoughts exactly. I do think that the fluids could be relevant though; taking away something from the car will always make a difference, significant or not. Trusting it not to be significant is quite a risk to take in a test of such magnitude.
it's a 2 ton car that survived a small overlap, there were the big cars normally fall apart due to the high weight small surface load. shortly: Excellent work VOLVO!
I've noticed that volvos in the small overlap test always sort of 'deflect' to the side instead of bouncing back to a stop like pretty much every other car, I don't see this behaviour even in Benz's. Is this something to do with the design?
Yes , the design, what Volvo have done on all of their vehicle is to attach the A pillard and door post structure to the solid frame under the hood. This design makes the vehicle deflect away from the obsticle. IIHS has a video on the design.
I really like these types of videos, informative and interesting. Although, I would have liked to have seen inside the passenger compartment after the accident, particularly the footwell as it looked like the front wheel was causing a fair bit of damage to that area.
As a life long volvo fan this brought a tear to my eye. The car my parents drove me home from the hospital in after I was first born was a volvo 360. Hi James, hope you got your Volvo. My dad worked for Volvo and I too drove an 850 but now I drive a Peugeot 508.
That was a beautiful story, and I hope you got your Volvo now after 4 years :) I myself am going around in a Volvo V70 from 1997. Beautiful masterpiece of engineering and mechanics.
General Zirkobi Except it looks shite
Wonder what you ended up getting. My first one was c30, now I have an xc60

chigasaki06 wow that's awesome!
That's because Volvo Made this test since the second half of 80's

@@klukash it's also a little scary, isn't it? Seeing as to how little other AR manufacturers care for the safety of the occupants in the car.
What a wonderful video!! So well done!! It makes you realize how much a car company like Volvo really cares!!!!
Another reason to love my xc60!
I was almost born in a Volvo and every day since then I've been riding around in Volvo's. and i will never stop.
That's why I have a Volvo XC60. I know this vehicle gives me the best chance to survive any unfortunate accident that may occur.
That's what I wanted my sis to get, but she opted for the Tiquan. Overall, German, and Volvo vehicles have a level of solidity missing from other manufacturers.
Well done MotorTrend. You deserve an Oscar for that truly stunning footage. You've made crash testing highly emotive.
Volvo is the best car !
Volvo is the best brand

Yeah, Volvo is nice car
When you buy an 850, yes
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely fascinating! I replaced my old s40 with one of these but hadn’t seen this video before hand. Amazing
salute the volvo for protecting people!
The Volvo badge is still like new
Oh, interesting

wait a 2010 one that's four years old?!?! how is that possible?
charlycute123
2010 was the first model year in the US of the XC60. I bought mine in the fall of 2009. Same car.
Volvo has always been will and will always be the safest cars!!
European Union disagrees with you
Yes it's scandinavia's biggest priority. (I am not saying that because i come from Denmark and Volvo is from Sweden.)
Well yes i am... :P
Actually it's Tesla now
Qweer45y6i77888990124456677890l,
***** Acura or Subaru have cars just as much or cheaper, but offer the same amount of safety.
The steel frame was intact, which keeps the occupants safe, well done indeed
this video is exactly showing us why people love volvo
The song at 05:07 is a cover of "Paparazzi" from Xzibit, leave a thumbs up so everybody can see
+AppleTutorials.com Who has made it? I cant find it anywhere
No. It’s a flute rendition of Pavane.
Same here. Was involved in a motorway crash, totalling my Volvo. My son and I survived. So, it's been Volvo ever since 1998.
Remember the TV ads in which Volvo stacked their cars 14 high with no passenger compartment deflection. I am alive due to one of my Volvo's doing what it should have done in a crash with a big Pantechnicon truck.
Love you guys at IIHS and what you do! this work will result in safer cars and save lives in years to come.
This is why I drive a Volvo s40
We're glad you enjoyed it! What other types of topics would you like to see?
Idk
This is why I bought a 2k8 S80-T6 AWD because I drove my step moms XC60 T6 love it and to protect my family!!!
My Dad has owned four volvos 72 164E,75 240DL,84 242 DL,1996 850 GLT and my step mother 2 {2k11 and 2k14} XC60 T6 AWD's.
my grandpa just bought a volvo s60 and after seeing this i am glad he chose it
am I the only one who feels bad for the car 😢 rip Volvo
Yoshi I'm sorry to hear :( but they got to sacrifice a Volvo to see if the a Volvo is safe or not.
A sacrifice made for us, peple have to see what are we putting our families in.
I FEEL BAD FOR THE VOLVO
It is really fascinating to see how much preparation is involved in crash testing vehicles. Excellent work!
im.thoroughly impressed! getting an XC60 this year!
no
IIHS's small overlap test, like the one shown in the video, is conducted at 40 mph, according to iihs.org. This is an extremely challenging test.

i have heard that volvo is the safest car in the world
Can't agree more
Toys and Fun okay why?
you're asking why he agrees?
who he, me?
It is
Great video. I enjoyed the small pavane interlude with the crash. Very well done with the visuals. I appreciate such artistic endeavors.
Volvo, a huge, safe, CHINESE-SWEDISH company keeping their motto honest. VOLVO has the safest cars
So true. If I had a family, I would get the new 2016 XC90. Volvo's have an understated classic look, I don't understand why they often get overlooked.
Great
***** Geely bought it, and Geely is Chinese
good thing the chinese part didn't applied to the car
Denver Cayle Ong
It's owned by a Chinese company, but 90% of the cars are still designed, produced and built in Sweden.
This was such a great video!!! It makes you feel PROUD and SAFE to own a Volvo!!!!!!!!
I work on Volvo cars everyday as a Volvo Tech, best cars for safety. Nothing comes close
hahahaha
even alfa romeo has got higher scores than a xc90 (Europe better than the shit states anyway).
Asssie's gaming You are joking? The new XC90 monstered crash tests.
The video is back! Sorry for the delay folks.
Swedish car - all the credit for Volvo's safety goes to the manufacturer - Its true it has recently been bought by Geely but that does not make it a Chinese car - since they bought Volvo..Chinese car safety performance has mysteriously improved...
I wonder why..
Yuxin Wang Yeah that's true, Volvo is still Swedish, it's just that the money is Chinese.
+Yuxin Wang Indeed, the chinese only interested in technology transfer I think.
In case Volvo returns profit, it's just a bonus for them
'Technology transfer' -
I think you are very diplomatic.
+Ham and Eggs This was a legal way most of the time it isn't.
'This was a legal way most of the time it isn't.'

wth? Why didn't they show the leg space there after the crash?
yeah would have been nice to see the consequences of the driver's legs actually....

Samuel G That's impressive! Totally opposite to what I expected
+m4rs12 Yeah, Volvo's are like the safest cars on the planet. The Volvo XC90 from 2003 gets a good rating in the Small Overlap crash test with almost no intrusion as well. FROM 2003!!! Pretty impressive. Check it on the IIHS website.
+Samuel G very good

This was a very unique video, I like that. Thanks for the inside look. I'm pretty sure the left headlight ceased to exist, it just disintegrated.
I love my volvo s40 vovlo4life
What a great car. Never heard anything bad about them.
I shall buy a VOLVO 2016XC90 IN FUTURE
Congrats on the high production value, well done!
Am i the only one looking for the titles of the soundtrack XD
I am looking for the name of the song starting at 5:08 Cap'n, help?
Let me help you buddy. That's Pavane, Op 50 by Boston Pops Orchesta, John Williams
Papparazi Xzibit covered Pavane, Op. 50

pff, that thing got up and walked away after that shit yo, im sure its still worth more than a honda in that condition.
maxman1244 always insult Honda. You know what, Honda cars are safe too, not only that is that they make good and reliable cars ^^
PainCakeSoldat Honda / Japanese Car Fanboy.
this video is very well put together...great editing
Volvo was the one that invented this test at their own facility in Sweden! IIHS adopted it from Volvo.
Thanks!
Charlie
I got tee boned on the left front door and a pillar at about 70k's by another 4wd. it had more damage than my xc60. the front left door opened as normal and no intrusion into the cabin. the other cars door required a bit of effort and looked like it hit a pole
ive got another xc60 now.
you make valid points that i overlooked. they need to has a head on test with a wall of sorts that structurally compresses in a way that would mimic that of another vehicle. I also think there should be a crash test that is standard that has to be done at 55 mph.
downshift is the commercial segment of autoblog, i don't understand why this still surprises people
I've already read them. But letting you run with the assumption that I haven't is just too much fun. Watching you get all riled up cuz you get so riled up so easily. Trés amusant.
My family will always drive in a VOLVO and nothing else! Volvo forever!
I think they are looking at specific crash results and testings. They might have taken it out so they can see the what the head does in its forward motion upon the impact. In this test, the head rest simply might not be a constant they are considering in this test.
Low Risk Of Injury!! After A Crash Like That? That's Amazing. Volvo Is Still Has The Safest Cars On The Road
Yes, it is most definately. Since Volvo has got such so much experience in this area.
Volvo has started going upwards in car industry. Really impressive!
This is actually a very valuable point.
I would have absolute confidence in having a crash in a Volvo. More so than any other manufacturer. Very Impressive.
Idk if I can go to any other car I started with an S80 v8 and fell in love I’m about to buy the 2015 xc60 can’t wait
+serge vivier But doesn't this have the risk of making it crash into more things afterwards?
@@Fishfingers232 the car is equipped with abs/automatic braking system, so it will stop after it slides off a pole
Good job volvo and also I really liked the pedestrian airbag. That was very innovative!
I really like these types of videos, informative and interesting. Although, I would have liked to have seen inside the passenger compartment after the accident, particularly the footwell as it looked like the front wheel was causing a fair bit of damage to that area.
That was very interesting and informative; great work (as always).
