Volvo XC90 Roll Over CRASH TEST

  • The 2015-2018 Volvo XC90 offers the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. It includes two world first safety technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability.
    In a run-off road scenario, the all-new Volvo XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. To help prevent spine injuries, energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame cushions the vertical forces that can arise when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain.
    The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher.
    City Safety becomes the umbrella name for all of Volvo Cars’ auto brake functions, which are standard equipment in the all-new XC90. It now covers vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in front of the car, day and night.

    My wife had a bad wreck in a 2001 Volvo S60 with a Chevy Tahoe at highway speeds. she was 5 months pregnant at the time with our son. He turns 18 this year thanks to Volvo. The Volvo was totaled but she was unhurt. The Tahoe, although it was much bigger and heavier, looked like it had been dropped off a cliff. The Volvo's sunroof and doors would still open. Within a week we bough another S60. The value of a Volvo is priceless.

      I agree about the value. We have an XC90 and thank God have had no accidents so far. You can't beat that feeling of doing the best to keep your kids safe though. If the worst should happen, I would never forgive myself if I had bought a less safe car.

      Very true, I had a co-worker die of a roll over accident because of speeding at a sharp curve. He was driving around 40 mph or higher and he was in a Ford Expedition. I would bet if he was in a Volvo, he would at least see his kids grow up.

      My dad had a coworker who, after this accident, refused to own anything other than Volvo. Orange County, Southern California traffic. Was hit from behind by someone trying to slide between her and a car in the next lane, going some unknown amount of speed. Hit the XC90 hard enough to spin it, cause it to roll, go over the center divider, and into oncoming traffic. They all walked away. They had scratches, some bruises, but they walked away.

    I had an accident driving my XC90 right this morning: a car without driver, parked on a steep slope, just came down, got momentum and hit my XC90 exactly on my side. I can assure it is a very safe car. I chose this car after watching the crash test on this site, on IIHS and EURONCAP. Had to wait 8 months but it was worthy. Take care;-)

    I was hit twice in one year in a Toyota, not an Suv. Both times going about 35 mph; one on the side; driver ran a light. Next rear ended, this was pre air bag. Result; 9 back surgeries. The car crumbled like aluminum foil. After much research, I bought my first Volvo based on what it weighed and how the seat felt on my broken spine.I just bought a 2015 Volvo v60, all cars have problems but you cannot put a price on feeling safe. Yes, Volvo is owned by a Chinese company BUT they only supply the money. Volvo still is designed, engineered by the same company. I love the blind spot warning system, the rear camera but mostly I love that I feel safe.And no even though both accidents resulted in tickets for the other drivers, I did not sue. Dumb.Yes, Volvos are not cheap but neither are 9 back surgeries, this car will not crumble if I get hit.

    I've bought a V40 2001 model in 2010 for 1000 Bucks with 120k miles on the clock. It was for nothing more than a runabout as a delivery car. I drove it each day in start stop traffic and in 4 years put another 80k miles on top. The car is solid, no major problems, only things replaced were the fluids, light bulbs, tires, brake pads, wipers. Mechanically the car was solid, a true workhorse. I crashed on the way to Lancaster in February 2015. At 60 miles i was rear ended by drunk driver on the motorway, caused me to hit the middle reserve and flip 3 times, ended up on the roof upside down. All the airbags deployed and I had no major injury, the only thing was that my elbow hit the gear and was quite bruised. So i am sold on the Volvo. Now driving the S60 and have no complaints!

      contemporarymonk I have a 97' v40 , about 300k miles on the clock, runs as new, no problems, very reliable and very solid! I drive it kinda fast on the bad roads of romania while german cars owners drive them slowly to not brake something, lol ! the v40 is a great great car ! Looks great, drives great, reliable, safe, kinda fast, a passat 2.0 tdi had no chance against my 2.0i , LOL ! My next car will be a V70 / XC70 [2002+]

      +Jeremy Good You don't *HAVE* to say it... it is true though! The XC90 scores much better than the BMW X5 or the Merc ML range. Similarly the XC60 scores a lot better than the X3. Three cheers for Volvo... cunning little Swedes! They also invented the seat belt in 1959 and chose *NOT* to patent it so that all car manufacturers could make their cars safer... kind hearted little Swedes! ;-)

    • @MDKN22

      +J0J0McM0M0 Far from it. I'm 1.66m tall, weigh 120lbs, and I've never been to Sweden in my life! Many of my friends prefer BMWs too. I wasn't looking for an argument. Just expressing a personal opinion. All Euro NCAP tests show Volvo's to be much safer than their German counterparts. That's just documented fact. For driving pleasure, I'd much rather drive a BMW M5 though!

    Volvo is hands down the safest. Most accidents do occur at around 30 - 40 mph, so that's why they test them at that point. People do crash at higher speeds in these cars and survive with little to no injuries. Although, it gets to a certain point where the safety of the car does not matter. If its enough force on impact to where the body can't handle it, doesn't matter what car you are in it can kill you. From too many G's in the force of the collision. But for me, Volvo for life.

    We did a factory pickup in Gothenburg of one of our Volvos and safety is clearly Job 1 for every Volvo employee and continues to be from what we have seen. We're also 2 months into our new XC90 and can't find enough good things to say about not only it's inherent safety but it's performance, luxury, driving feel and so much more. The 4 cylinder 2 litre thing made me nervous BUT turbo/super charge Swedish engineering seems like we have a 4 litre V8. (The idle sound is still a little underwhelming!)

      Most people brake before an accident.

    • @juno980
      @juno980 7 років тому

      It'd be pointless too, it's known that that's just inevitably deadly. Also I believe tha cable cars they use can only do 75 km/h, so upgrading equipment is avoided. And as Connor said, you brake before you crash.

    • @n4mpa
      @n4mpa 7 років тому

      connor Piper Yes but they don't usually have time to react early enough to be able to brake, and if they will they most likely won't get the speed down to 48 km/h.

    • @juno980
      @juno980 7 років тому

      Another1 Once more. If you are going (assuming you are from the UK) 113 km/h and you crash at 75 head on into an immovable object, you're dead, no matter what. These tests are made for testing chassis strength and crumple zones.

    Something is off. The old model rolled 3 times then landed on its roof for the same roll over test (ua-cam.com/video/CqNITUm3WA8/v-deo.html). The new one rolls over only 2 times. Was the drop off speed lower on this one? Would expect it to survive better given fewer rolls. Inquiring minds want to know.

    When you crash in a volvo, the other car and the road will be damaged, not the volvo

    The volvo´s side crash at 35 mph seems quite more harmful than the 31 mph test done by the IIHS

    These vehicles of today get completely totaled by these lower speeds. I can't imagine what will happen to these vehicles, if they are in accidents at the high speeds they advertise.

      Thats because cars now have crumple zones and without them even low speed accidents can easily be fatal.

      Damage is what you see. But the passenger compartment is perfectly fine. All that destruction is to slow inertia. A car from 1970 would kill you with these tests. Also, this car, is the best of the best.

    • @SeanManks
      @SeanManks 9 років тому

      connor Piper - Agreed, but cars of yester-years didn't have strong engines that one could drive at high speeds as today's car can.

    • @mardamek
      @mardamek 9 років тому

      Sean M that's only true if you're comparing acceleration or top end speed figures. The truth is that highway speeds are pretty much the same. Cars from the 60's can still do 55-65 mph cruising on the highway. Just because modern cars are faster, doesn't mean that daily driving is much different between the new ones and the old ones. So, chances of getting in an accident are very much the same (in fact, the active safety being lower in older cars may mean a higher chance of getting in an accident). So, really, it still comes down to comparing the passive safety stats when it comes to an accident. The only thing that may be true about an older car being better than a newer one is if it's a good ole American boat from the 50's or 60's colliding with a modern Japanese car, in which case the passengers will be better off (assuming they're buckled in) since the weight difference of the two will be in favor of the old car's passengers (since most accidents are between 2 cars and not a car hitting a solid object and having it's own energy returned to it).

    55km/h - 70 km/h is not realistic. Because if you're going to crash against the car traveling towards you. There's an compound alpha force of impact.
