  • This video is part of our “21 in ’21” series that highlights one of the 21 AMA Superbike Champions each week as we move through the 2021 MotoAmerica season - the 45th year of the premier class championship.
Bubba Shobert became the sixth AMA Superbike Champion in 1988, and it came after he realized that his future might just be in road racing - and, surprisingly, not flat track. Shobert’s first road racing victory came at Mid-Ohio in 1984. In the pouring rain. For those who thought it was a fluke, it was just a hint of what was to come. Shobert’s ability to road race earned him a spot where he really wanted to be - in MotoGP. And it came quickly - the very next year after he won the Superbike title. Shobert showed promise right away on a 500cc GP racer, but it was potential that was never reached as his career ended just three races into the series when he collided with Kevin Magee on the cooldown lap and suffered head injuries. Although he recovered, he never raced again. Despite the career-ending injury, Shobert is still a motorcyclist - through and through.

So cool when Nicky Hayden wore a Bubba Shobert tribute helmet at Laguna.

This man (Bubba) is a legend, that has not gotten the level of attention he deserves. Watching him race in the San Jose Mile, and Superbikes (at Laguna) my friends and I were so impressed with him and his career. That red, White and blue Honda 750 was the bike of the day, and we all had one! Bubba, if you are ever in San Jose, let me know and we'll take you for an amazing ride up to Alice's restaurant. I know some people who would love to meet you.

Bubba and that West Texas drawl.
Brings back a lot of fond memories from the good ole days of the 80s.

Kevin Schwantz as well.. whom, combined with Freddy Spencer, were the fastest American riders to win MotoGP championships but not an AMA Superbike title.

In 1987 I got a VFR750 to race in the WERA endurance series and we used the number 67 because of Bubba. What a great guy

Used to go to Ross Downs a lot as a young kid. It was always a big deal when Bubba Shobert, Mike Kidd, and Terry Poovey used to get together. Man they put on some exciting races.

I think Bubba had he not had this crash. Could have been a 500 Champion. He had talent.

I believe it was back in '93 when Bubba was managing Wayne Rainey's 250 gp team - The first thing me a Ienatsch would do was chase down Bubba for a bag of his and his dad's FABULOUS beef jerky- they called it "Lone star" Jerky - Not sure if he's still making it, but anyone who's ever had some, knows exactly what I'm talking about-

His son is making the Jerky now. Check online for the Website Lone Star Jerky. I live in Lubbock County and know it’s good

I have Bubba Shobert's real signature .. and the 17 preceding AMA Grand National Champions, all on the same sheet of paper. in a special edition gold leaf leather bound version of "American Racer 1940-1980... might be one of the only copies of this book around still.
