A laid back smoke filled bar, low lights, your girl by your side and Bill on stage ten feet away. I wish i could have been there, the 50's blues and jazz scene seemed so dark, lonely and strangely comforting.
All this from his old guitar snd a ropey amp through a ropey mic and it still sounds better than any modern day guitar player. Bill had talent that was supreme- and in abundance.
Not only a great guitar player and voice but he must've been quite the scoundrel in his youth with his songs about night time gambling, drinking and hooking up... all without a single dime in his pocket.. What a man.
Big Bill is the best! I've been listening to him since the late 1960's and his playing still makes the hairs on my kneck stand up!! He was the master of that country blues picking.
@@DougwhiteheadArrayofsolutions He ain't & Bill is. Read his biography on a plane trip in'63, when I got back home I bought a Big Bill l.p. A wise investment.
So so totally great. Dude sounds like three guitars. Tremendous video, editing, love the ending....we didn't know there was a bunch of hipsters in the club.
First saw this on Scottish television....this wonderful life....Dr John Grierson. Documentary, early sixties. Instantly became a fan of Big Bil. The glory of love etc. 👍
Indeed a truly wonderful recording audio and visual. Love the voodoo queen swinging the lamp. UA-cam is a great platform for these archive performances.
fabulous - we get a real good close up of his pickin hand, be nice to see what his fretting hand is doing but i guess you cant have everything. A blues guitar master.
I heard him do vocals on this: ...hey, why you throwin' your clothes out da window? Cuz if you knew what I had up in this room, and how much I paid for it, you'd know that those clothes will be way outa style when I come back down...
Maybe an audio clean-up is in order, that sound is ropey and lets the masterful playing down heavily, and this is coming from someone who listens to early Jamaican ska a lot....
+amatelk956 Bob was born in '41 he was 15 in '56 Bob's career started 3 years later at age of 18 in '59... so he couldn't have been on this show that early..
Okay so I'm not a musician. But do have great taste, somehow. 🤣. Have always LOVED BILL'S playing. But who can tell me WHY none of his music sounds the least bit dated to me? I've often been perplexed by that. 🪄
He had a really unique style when it comes to songs like the above. Like, it fills a room, no other instruments required. It does what rock 'n roll did later (and it does it better in my opinion.)
Does anyone know anything about this video like where it was shot and .Girls look American and the bar screams Detroit dive!Love it.Its fun to play, he's a "one off". Just a couple years too early for me,I missed it.

Beats any modern videoclip...ever...
For a blues fan like me this is gold. Thanks.
Clapton mentioned this performance in his autobiography. What a masterpiece this is.
All this from his old guitar snd a ropey amp through a ropey mic and it still sounds better than any modern day guitar player.

i guess this is where rock and roll came from...
I wish I could build a time machine just so I could travel back to when Big Bill recorded this and applaud him for 10 minutes straight

1956! he'd been doing the shit for 30 years! And Big Joe Turner was on his way to becoming a rock and roll star!
Bill's recording of 'Backwater blues' remains one of my favourites, chilling vocals make the hairs on my neck stand on end.
Cool. Clapton mentions watching this growing up in his autobiography. Amazing we can watch this. Thanks for the upload
If Clapton is good, this guy is GREAT! Love it

Rock steady base which is missing from so many imitations today. Get out the metronome boys!
Did Broonzy have one? It’s not the metronome it’s lack of practice
Incredible!

I think they were called beatnicks back then. haha
Brilliant. Raw, beautiful. So much talent...
Very cool. With the lady and abstract shots, this is surely an early example of a music video
Nothing can top this
All rise.
This is just so fucking good.
Wow. Best video on youtube.
This one's a keeper.
How Cool Is This!
Pure magic.
And playing an "old" Martin 00028! Perfect!
Great clip
Imagine hearing this when all of the other music played on the radio was big band stuff!!!!!! 😎✌️
And? I love both.
cool jump blues - like it!!
There are videos of the same song that show the guitar work, not candles and faces. Who needs this one?
I do. Thanks for your contribution.
Amazing music! Also amazing director! He plays with the light so nice...Considering the ancient means they were using,it is admirable!!!
😮😮😮😢😢😮😮some kind of peaking 😮
Wow! Never knew one guitar could make that sound.
Don’t feel bad, neither do most guitarists.
When you get your fingers and thumb coordinated you'll do this too if you put some hours in

This is one of those happy songs I listen too. God I'm feeling blue right now too.
Cool on all levels !!!
that is really awesome
One man orchestra.
What a great film. Thank you, I have loved Big Bill since I was very young and never saw this excellent film. Bravo!
Absolutely stunning !
Super GREAT!! Thank You!!
Looks like the cavern club in Liverpool ,yet this is1956,way before the Beatles at the cavern in 1962...Rock and roll is the baby of the blues!

Ray Davies praises him when he has a chance...
the music is great, it's just a shame that the director doesn't like music, but likes to present himself as an artistically responsible filmmaker,

In a proper joint too!
wow ! was that bob Dylan at 0:22 Lol a young one...
No, that's a woman.
Such a great, great video.
Do you remember the rumor that the one woman on the cover of "Bringing It All Back Home" was Dylan in drag?
No, not Dylan .. 1956!
