Street photography may be the most challenging form of photography, not just on a technical level, but on a social and personal level. Many street photographers enjoy the art form, they enjoy the tools, but may not be super-extroverted. That is my problem, I'm okay with people but my anxiety gets in the way of taking the shots I'd love to take. In the past 2 years, I am happy with the progress I've made, going from an anxious observer to an active participant on the street.

I keep saying 'Islington Wharf' when I meant 'New Islington Marina' 🤦🏼‍♂ they are next door to each other, but yes, if you plan to visit, it's New Islington Marina you want to navigate to!

Your episode was actually the first time in a while that I reached out to shoot with a complete stranger. I was so nervous (also lost my voice). I'm so happy it helped set us both on the path we're on now.
Thank you so much for agreeing to be featured and for the shoutout. ❤

Solid advice! Overcoming the fear of feeling like you’re invading peoples privacy is difficult. You’ve gotten extremely good at it and it really does show in your photographs. Thanks for the motivation!

I find your comment about how we all think we suck at dealing with people interesting. I've always considered myself anti-social. I don't go out of my way to meet new people in social situations. Yet when I'm out with my camera, I'll find myself getting into lengthy conversations with people on the street. It's been a bit surprising how easily I talk to them about photography and enjoy the interactions.

Very nice video, George. That Colin Firth clip was lovely. It is a good reminder that when we go out to shoot, we must think k about the connection… also, I have that Daewood Bae book! Good stuff. Cheers!

Thanks for recommending the Aperture workshop series book Dawoud Bey, On photographing people and communities. The series of books by various photographers is really good, and this book in particular insightful with some great portraits.

It’s a journey worth taking to overcome this. When you’ve come the whole way, the feeling of taking photos with a camera is the same as if you’re using your phone like back when you were a normie. Weightless.
Anybody who sees a difference, it’s pretty much imagined. Which isn’t to say “it’s all in her head,” but instead “Imagination can change things”

    Hey George!
Thanks for this video! I'm at the earliest possible stage of street photography - as you describe re yourself - shy, uncertain, unwilling to engage. I'm getting some nice shots just being discrete, but believe I'll do better once I start having the confidence to engage openly. So many thanks for sharing your journey with this.
Thanks also for opening my eyes to Dawoud Bey - I'm off to watch some videos about him now!
    Cheers from Australia.

Hi George, great video and some excellent advice too. I went through the same thing but a few years before you and though I’d never really heard of Street Photography it turns out I’d been shooting it without knowing but Street Portraits was something I really didn’t do, didn’t know it was a thing until I joined a Facebook Group, the creator was based in Manchester, my birthplace but I live nearly 20 miles up the road now in Horwich, just below Rivington Pike. A few months after I joined the group I became one of its Admin, this was around 6 years ago now, I started going on Photo Walks with Ian, the group creator and on only our second outing, though we did try a couple the first time out, we decided to focus on Street Portraits, I took to it immediately and have done them ever since, though not so much this year as I seem to be doing other things like Landscape and Wildlife, even Drone footage but very new at that.
One way I find to get an image is by looking out for people taking hoots of their family or friends, you see there’s always one of them that misses out due to being behind the camera, usually a phone. I just ask if they want me to take a photo of them all, with their camera, then ask if they mind if I take one and always offer to send it to them via Instagram, Email, whatever they want, I’d say it works 7-8/10 so not a bad amount, especially around an event, holiday time like Christmas or a particular place like a football stadium etc. something like Comic Con is great, people dress up because they want to be seen, but the best event we shot was REBELLION PUNK FESTIVAL in Blackpool, it started again last year, Post Covid but wasn’t quite as busy as it was the previous one in 2019, never had any refusals and when you see a 20 something Punk with an 8 inch Mohican sat with a 80 year old lady, with the Punk drinking tea and the old dear on the wine, mid afternoon it’s a great thing to see but the old dear didn’t want her photo taking and tempting as it was to get a candid shot I didn’t and respected her wishes, I didn’t want to spoil her day and possibly her holiday for the sake of one image.
Anyway, sorry for rabbiting on and maybe I’ll bump into you in Manchester at some point.
    Keep up the great work

Very interesting approach on the theme. Do you imagine that when you are being filmed or filming in first person, your behavior might also change due to the "commitment" to having to show some result in the footage???

Good video, but did anyone ask you why you wanted a picture of their dog? Also, did anyone ask for a copy of the photo, and if not, did you offer to give them one? Did you have to ask for an email address? For me, those are the anxiety producing aspects of street photography.

    • @GeorgeHolden
      @GeorgeHolden  3 місяці тому +1

One or two did ask, all I said was "I'm taking photos of dogs in town today" I didn't add a project, some people I would offer to send a photo but many didn't want it. Usually if someone was skeptical I would offer to send the photo. I have a video on this topic from a year ago, if you look for "The Scary Side of Street Photography" I think that should be helpful for you
