  • Legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac has achieved countless accolades throughout their storied 50-year career. They have sold 120 million records worldwide, won numerous Grammy Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. They have managed to achieve all these honors while going through numerous lineup changes, internal conflicts, and bouts with addiction. Indeed, it was common for the band to go through lineup changes but it didn’t prevent them from churning out hit music. But all the changes and turmoil did have tragic results for the band and here are the details. Sometimes you have to go your own way to make things work.

      I believe you are basically right about that but, not by me. I love Christine's voice. Most particularly in "Little Lies", "Isn't it Midnight" and a couple others. I noticed her for sure. I will also say, I have heard more than a dozen ladies try to back Stevie up and NOBODY did it anywhere NEAR as well as Christine, who had a voice that was present and noticed but not drowning out the lead (Stevie) she had perfect pitch and perfect level to accompany Stevie PROPERLY and complimented her perfectly with just the right voice. NONE of the others I have seen backing Stevie came within a lightyear of being a replacement for Christine. Worry not John, there are many with enough taste to feel the same way you do. :) - DJ Pantha

    Back in 1980, I bumped into Christy McVie while skiing near Lake Tahoe. It started raining with lightning, so the slopes were closed. I walked into the lodge to have pizza and beer, and saw Christy again sitting at a table with another woman. I took a pitcher of beer over and asked if I could sit at her table. She stared at me for a few seconds, then pushed the bench seat out with her feet, and she just said "alright then" and I sat down, poured 3 beers. She held hers up and said "cheers" and we drank our beers. Then my pizza came, and without asking, she and her friend helped themselves. She asked me where I was from, and what I did for a living, and she told me she had a place up the street.....but NO...she did not ask me to go home with her. She was very sweet and kind. I was thrilled just to meet her and get her autograph, which I still have today!

    Saw them in Oct '75 at the Boston Garden (when I was 14). My big brother and girl friend had an xtra ticket and asked me last minute if I wanted to see Jefferson Starship. Fleetwood Mac opened for them, but none of us knew much about them. They played a few new singles that hadn't yet officially released: "Over My Head", "Rhiannon", and "Landslide". I really liked em a lot, but my brother just wanted JStarship to stage. Those following weeks, I began hearing those same songs on the radio (they had just released their self titled "Fleetwood Mac" album). I played drums in a band and remember telling my buddies FMac was gonna be Big, but they couldn't get their heads around anything beyond Mott the Hoople, TRex, Bowie, Aerosmith and Queen ; )

    One of the best bands ever. I would still go to a concert of any of them. Love all of them. They each had something special to offer. Even thru the breakups they all still loved each other so much. I always held out hope they’d get it together and tour again. I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I love this quote from Lindsey Buckingham. He said this when he and Stevie were singing together for the last time together. I think the song was “Say Goodbye”. A beautiful song and I got the impression they still loved each other but they had both gone their separate ways. Buckingham was married and had a baby by then.

    And little redemption without forgiveness”

    That California recording studio where Mick Fleetwood met Buckingham and Nicks was called Sound City Studios. That studio produced some of the most iconic rock albums... Fleetwood Mac, Working Class Dog, Nevermind, Rage Against the Machine, several Tom Petty albums - the list goes on from the early '70s til 2011. Dave Grohl produced a really cool documentary on Sound City, they spend a good ten minutes or so on Fleetwood Mac and how that classic lineup came to be.

Its amazing that Stevie’s memory is so conveniently selective.

    So sad all these ups and downs with the band. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham still love each other. They also have so much distrust and hate inside for each other. This is what the drugs and alcohol has done to them. They both have other loves in their lives but there is still the deep one that they have. I do hope they can get over their difficulties and forgive each other. Fleetwood Mac isn't the same without them both. I have loved the band since 1972 and still do today in 2020. Such talented folks. My prayer is that they do come bac together and go on contuning to produce awesome music. The way God intended when He gave them such awesome talents.

    This totally glosses over the self-sabotaging "Tusk years" and changing their look to conform to industry-driven pop (particularly Lindsey Buckingham). More money was spent on recording Tusk than Eagles "Hotel California" (most expensive album ever made at that time). Tusk was heavily hyped in marketing which only arose harsher critical review. To make matters worse, live concerts intended to promote the Tusk album soured quickly as fans were throwing objects on stage (mainly at Buckingham) and fans walking out mid-show. Fans were shouting at Buckingham, "You sold out!" It's all in Mick Fleetwood's book, "My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac." Nicks and Buckingham experienced marginal pop success in the early 80s, but only solidified the image as a fledgling band's last gasp. They did gain some new fans, but lost their larger original album-buying 70s fan base. It was "Tusk" and the band's image changes that drove away fans and will always be known as the beginning of the end of Fleetwood Mac.

    Grunge, love your channel, but if you want an amazing band that is actually tragic, I suggest a video on Def Leppard. They have some of the biggest hits ever and they have had their fair share of tragedy and they have only made a few lineup changes. They still make good music even if it’s not their 80’s hits.

      Motorcityman Man yes early mac, is more blues rock and then the middle period with kirwan Christine and Welch, is getting closer to the pop sound of the mid to late 1970s. However, it still had its own distinct and in my opinion, better sound than the stuff nicks and buckingham did.

    Have to take issue with you there, Peter Green wasn't addicted to drugs, LSD isn't physically addictive. Also nothing unusual about Fleetwood Mac's chaotic interpersonal relationships, pretty much true of any band of that era and every decade since.

    • @jw1773
      @jw1773 3 роки тому

      He said "drug addiction AND lsd use" this does not necessarily mean that he was referring to the lsd when referencing the addiction. Furthermore, cocaine is not a drug one can become "physically addicted" but that sure doesn't stop plenty of people from have an addiction. I suppose my point is, not all addictions require physical dependency.
