As someone mentioned below, Rumours was actually the 2nd album with Nicks & Buckingham. First was self-titled Fleetwood Mac ( sometimes called their 'White Album" ) in 1975 containing 'Rhiannon' , 'Landslide" & 'Say You Love Me'

Just an FYI. Peter Green, one of the great British blues guitarists of the era, formed Fleetwood Mac with Mick Fleetwood in the mid 1960s. Bassist John McVie was the Mac in the band name. Christine Perfect (McVie) joined the group in 1970. That lineup was immensely popular and they even had a No. 1 hit, with Albatross and others like Oh Well, as well as some best selling albums like Then Play On. When Peter Green left in early 1970, the band went through a somewhat uneven musical phase of changing members, until Nicks and Buckingham were discovered by Fleetwood while scouting Sound City Studios in LA. And the rest is history.

Just a slight correction. Buckingham and Nicks' first Album with the Mac was actually the Album entitled 'Fleetwood Mac". It was the album prior to Rumours. On it were the songs Landslide and Rhiannon. Rumours was the best selling Album of all time for a period and overpowered anything else they did.

I grew up on Fleetwood Mac's music - my dad was a teacher during the 70's and around the time of the first album featuring Stevie and Lindsay (the self-titled Fleetwood Mac) he had a student tell him that they were going to be the biggest band in the world --- how right that student was! My dad loved telling that story and he loved FM's music (I still remember listening to those 8 tracks in the 70's). Glad this show is bringing in some new FM fans!

  • @CIM84

Great video! An addition: Stevie said while she and Lindsey publicly broke up in 77, they didn't *officially* break up until 87 (while involved w other people), they also hooked back up circa 1996-2001ish, while Lindsey was with his eventual wife- who, coincidentally, I'm sure, was a photographer at the time like Camila Dunne (this affair is covered in the Stevie album Trouble in Shangri-la and the FM album Say You Will). And then there's that 2013 performance with both in tears while singing a break up song. The Stevie/Lindsey story will never end and the Billy/Daisy relationship was probably a combination of ALL their drama over 40 years!

Probably the key element that the Daisy Jones series captured about both Daisy and Stevie was the determination of both artists to claim their right to practice their art and chart their own career course. In 1970 this was profoundly difficult, especially in Rock which was non-politely referred to as cock rock where women rockers were almost non-existent.
Both Daisy and Stevie took a Lot of attacks for stepping out from under male controls. To this day, there are men who trash Stevie for her independence and for inspiring other women to live their best lives.
What the creaters of Daisy Jones changed was the role of family. Stevie remained very close to her family and received strength and emotional support from them. Daisy had self absorbed parents and raised herself without their support or love.

I do remember their heyday, I graduated high school a few years before Rumours released. They had chart toppers for over a year, everyone either had it or had listened to it. It was HUGE. After it released the stories of the breakups started trickling out, here was no internet then, and I to this day admire their tenacity to complete the album in the face of all that drama.

I was 17 at the height of the Rumours album. It is still in my collection today. I was going through a really rough time, constant fights with my parents, mostly my Mom, and an on and off relationship with my first love. Eventually I left home , at 17 to go out on my own, and when I was feeling insure I played Rumours. I really related to Daisy Jones and the Six. Being an only child, like Daisy aka Margaret and being ignore really hit home with me. I saw the reference to Fleetwood Mac right away in the first couple of episodes. Some of "Graham's" licks were signature Buckingham bits, too.
Just to add, while Fleetwood Mac was the first album Lindsey and Stevie were on with that band, they previously released an album on their own, "Buckingham Nicks." The song Crystal, which also appeared on that Fleetwood Mac album was originally released on their own album. There's a story to how Mick Fleetwood discovered Lindsey by listening to the tapes from that album...another day.

There's a dash of Mike Campbell and Don Felder in his playing too. Especially on the track Regret Me, which is a total Heartbreakers banger. Very similar to Stop Draggin' My Heart Around at the tempo of Refugee. Mike Campbell and Neil Finn from Crowded House actually replaced Lindsey Buckingham for a moment.

I jumped on the bandwagon in the early to mid-70s when Buckingham-Nicks put out their self-titled album. Weirdly enough, the album was a failure except in one place, Birmingham, Alabama. One of our FM radio stations played that album non-stop. We were all sold on the duo. I still have my album. I went to see the duo at Boutwell Auditorium in the early 70s. They played their last concert as a duo at Jacksonville State University in Alabama and then joined Fleetwood Mac. If there was ever a show or movie done about Fleetwood Mac, it would be a can't miss, unless they got the casting brutally wrong. The endless storylines are already there.
I read the book and watched the Daisy Jones show on prime, enjoyed both. It pales in comparison to the drama of Fleetwood Mac in my opinion. You have two separate couples who separated, but yet still performed together for 4 decades after they separated, performing songs you wrote about them when you were deep in the throws of these breakups, with them. I can't think of anything else as wild as the dynamic that makes up Fleetwood Mac.

Great video btw. A curious little theory is that besides Fleetwood Mac there is another band that may have served as inspiration for Daisy Jones and The Six as well. In Brazil there was a very famous singer called Rita Lee (in fact her full name was Rita Lee Jones) and in the late 60s and early 70s she was part of a folk rock band called Os Mutantes (The Mutants) which was originally formed by two brothers and was called O'Seis (The Six in a "redneck" accent) before Rita joined. Rita and Arnaldo (one of the brothers) were married and he ended up kicking her out of the band in 1978, which after that the band was over and Rita went to have a very successful solo career. Looks is also another similarity between Rita and Daisy as they both had long red hair and bangs, the resemblance is uncanny. It may be all a big coincidence, but I firmly believe the author took inspiration from those two bands (Fleetwood Mac and Os Mutantes) and created a story about a third original band.

You did a fantastic job, Nats! I am a bit of a connoisseur of Fleetwood Mac and you got all of the facts correct. The only MINOR thing you said was that Stevie changed her name from Stephanie. I wouldn't go that far, because it is clearly a nickname for Stephanie. Like I said, a very minor point! Thank you for doing such a bang-up job on this!

Aurora contins the vocal harmonies similar to Rumours. Suki Waterhouse has a alot of high harmonies that back Riley similar to Christine backing Stevie and vice versa

The same year Stevie released Bella Donna, Lindsey Buckingham released his own solo album Law and Order.
Phil Collins also put Face Value out between the Genesis albums Duke and Abacab.
In between album sessions for The Joshua Tree, U2 backed up Robbie Robertson on his eponymous debut solo album, and after the Lovetown tour wrapped up, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr played bass and drums on Daniel Lanois solo record. These things happen.
Also it wasn't just Daisy that left the band. Eddie, Graham and Billy left too leaving only Karen and Warren. Thats the core of the band including both frontmen. Zeppelin ended because Bonham died.

Maybe appropriate here also to mention Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart - great musicians/singer-songwriters of the '70s who had to suffer a lot of crap being female, beautiful & talented. Check out early Heart albums 'Dreamboat Annie' & 'Little Queen'. Dolly Parton recently covered 'Magic Man' - original's better!

This marriage, motivated by the tragic passing of her best friend Robin of cancer (Kim's late wife), aimed at providing care for Robin's son, Matthew. Yet, the union was brief, lasting just three months. Some similarities to the death of Cami

The vast vast majority of Daisy and the six was very much based off of Fleetwood Mac no doubt. However! The actress who played Daisy with the dark , dark eye make up and hair shape and style it's kind of like the threw a little Grace Slick in there too. Stevie Nix was known for her various caps, hats in her early days then flowing puffy, feathered blonde hair later. I don't ever remember Stevie with that hair style ever.

Another band one can compare Daisy Jones and the Six to is the Montreal indie band Stars, who are about the furthest thing from a 70s band, especially since their "big album" Set Yourself On Fire came out in 2004. There was a lot of drama in that band that I didn't know about until I saw a play starring them, written by them and directed by Chris Abraham (think Curb Your Enthusiasm meets Tick Tick Boom but is also a Stars concert - very meta production) but as it turns out, their co-lead-singer Amy Millan was engaged to Chris Seligman (keyboards), and then ended up getting married to their bass player Evan Cranley, and they also wrote a lot of Rumoursesque style tracks back and forth which made it on the album In Our Bedroom After The War (Midnight Coward, Bitches in Tokyo, Today Will Be Better I Swear). They also are big fans of not only Fleetwood Mac, but also Steely Dan, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, as well as a lot of 80s English Pop like Prefab Sprout, Electronic, The The, and ofc The Smiths (Torq is actually originally from Sheffield).
Also, Amy Millan and a few other members of Broken Social Scene were writing consultants on this show and a lot of stories most likely involving the likes of Kevin Drew, Leslie Feist, Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw (Metric) made it into the storylines. Their "job" was to help the writers understand what it was like to "be on a tour bus in your 20s with other attractive 20somethings playing music every night and getting paid in alcohol".

The drama certainly plays a role in Fleetwood’s raw emotionalism, but I would put forward the album “Rumors” (and honestly all their hits) are so good is because Lindsey, Mic, and Stevie are all musical geniuses. Anyone interested in unpacking just the compositional aspect of their work should check out Professor Rock’s video on “The Chain”. 😊

I loved the series and have been a long time fan of Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac. I think Daisy Jones & Stevie’s style is similar but not so much their personalities. Also, Stevie’s friend Reese Witherspoon is executive producers of the Daisy Jones and the Six tv show, so it seems a tad contrived that Stevie made a statement about the show a few weeks ago. I’m sure Stevie probably liked the show, but a lot of these things are planned to get more views, ratings and money..

Stevie does not remember their relationship in any way similar to Mick. Just saying. It did not last as long as he thought, according to her. 'Rumors' was the follow-up album to 'Fleetwood Mac.' Nicks always arranged her career around Fleetwood Mac. It was her outlet b/c she had such an output of tunes that would never see the light of day, competing with all of the other bandmates. She and Lyndsey have had a complicated relationship over the decades.

    I think it’s for kids meaning Gen Z .
I’m disgusted they’d put that out in the light of Miss McVies passing!
    Anyway,
    Ewwww
    No thank you.
