The interesting thing about football is that the best players each year are almost always the midfielders and strikers. We are obsessed with goals and assists. We do not value defenders and goalkeepers as much as we should. Because their contributions are less evident.
In this case you had a defender who ALSO had the goals........yeah I would say that is very much comparable to the elites like Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski today.

At his active time I was extremely impressed by Ronald Koeman. It's a shame that he is almost forgotten nowadays. During his time at Barcelona (as a libero/defender)he had a hgher goals per match ratio than Zidane (an all time great midfielder) during his time at Real Madrid.
When the football world talks about free kick grandmasters, David Beckham is always mentioned, while Koeman is hardly ever recalled. Just compare how many goals Koeman scored compared to Beckham?

@@MrGroovy87 with those stats and after watching a video about his career it's rather strange you'd limit his legacy to simply the CB position. The dude is a legendary FOOTBALLER...I bet he would've made a career as striker with that instinct for goal. But thankfully he didn't because that makes his story that much more interesting. This dude did it all... defend, pass, and attack. I do agree about the coaching part though... hopefully he gets more chances to build his name as a coach once he moves on. He really did shoot himself in the foot by taking this Barcelona team when he did (honestly, anyone that would've taken this Barcelona was pretty much fucked anyway).

As a Dutch guy and watched many games of Ronald Koeman i have to admit to have forgotten how good he was at scoring. I knew he had a devastating right leg with one of the hardest shots in the world(over 120khm)
He had a reputation and people got scared, because so players have been hit very hard buy a ball he fired. But 250 goals, that just simply unheard. Many strikers would love to have those statistics.
Just unreal tbh! In 88 we were European champions, and we should have won the WC in 90. Somehow we ended up losing 4 WC finals...unreal as well. Thanks for the video!

Hey! I had to trim a few seconds of the video at 3:58 dude to copyright issues. Over those few seconds all I said is that despite their first game loss against the soviet union, the netherlands would go on to win all other group stage match and then beat Germany as Koeman scored the opener only to find the Soviet Union in the final and take revenge by beating them to the title.
Unlickly another trim at 8:42 i mainly just said he deserved a 10/10 in technical ability for his progressive style of play

Us Finns remember Koeman very well. I don’t remember what was the game in Helsinki Olympic Stadium for Holland against Finland, but I remember one time Koeman shot his incredibly hard shot which missed the goal but the ball boy catched the ball mid-air. The hole crowd gave the ballboy standing ovation.

Koeman is an absolute legend of the game. He is one of the true greats. Unbelievable player. Doesnt get the recognition he deserves. Not only a great goal scorer but a great passer passer. He was a key player for Barca and Holland back then. Great defender and scored some amazing goals plus he was a playmaker too for both teams. Arguably the best free kick + long shot taker of all time. Absolute legend.
With a central defender like him, you don't even need a striker anymore

Coming here after news about Koeman's firing as Barca's coach. My father said while he flop as a coach, he was a legend when playing, and i see how. 200+ goals as centre back is crazy. And watching this video and another about Koeman, i think he's very underrated. His pass is also very accurate and he's a deadly piece taker as well

Koeman told during and interview, he perfected his shot by practicing free kicks after regular training. From young age, he did so, every single day, year after year. At the end, he managed to score 1 out of 3.
How I had not heard about even the name of this legend until pes2021 and then this now is criminal! Wow that is incredible what he has accomplished!
As a CB, Koeman often pushed himself high to score goals, but as a coach, he blamed Mingueza for doing the same.

I didnt rate him as a great defender. But his distribution was great and his goal scoring was unparalled. That probably made up for his defending. I think overall he is a very good player.

He was a great defender when considering positioning and timing. His Achilles heel was his speed. As a sweeper, with other defenders covering his back, he was one of the best ever. Unfortunately, Cruyff's Barcelona played often with only 3 defenders, whick left the defense very vulnerable to counterattack.
@@dennai7695 Exactly. When he had a fast defender next to him the combination was just incredible. In the national team there were defenders like Adri van Tiggelen, Frank Rijkaard and especially Berry van Aerle who were faster.

Retired at 34 in 1997. Would’ve liked to have see him play a few more years. Feyenoord were in the Champions League 97-98 season.

i saw a documentary about johan cruyff and his tactics, he used ronald koeman as a libero between the two center backs, they played with 3 defenders when johan was the coach, and ronald was always the first one to get the ball so he could advance with it, he had good skill and good passing

Koeman was a beast and was more like a sweeper or Libero then just a centre back, he had a beastly strong and precise shot. So he started from defending positions organizing his team defending, but when his team was on the ball he transformed to a playmaker just behind the box where he was another passing option with the perfect position to unleash his beastly shots once he saw an opening.
Players like Koeman, Beckenbauer or Gullit which you can see in this Video too, are the rarest type of players on a football pitch. Very handy and capable on both sides of the transitions, defending or attacking in the same top quality!

Because he was really slow (relatively ) but because he could read the game so well he usually was in the right place at the right time going forward , he was great as a defender again for his reading of the game.

uhm. He was part of the total football philosophy from Johan Cruyff. Wich was genius to see.
He was main defender for cryuff tactics, with other 2 two defenders
Dutch total football was about pressing high up the field, which makes defenders more vulnerable. Therefore you cannot compare koeman’s numbers with traditional defenders. Cruijff’s mantra was, Score more goals than the other side. Therefore goals against were expected, but it was also known the Dutch could score 2x 3x 4x to win the game. Just by looking at this video you can see a Defender scoring more goals than many Top Striker. Whenever I hear other top defenders talk about Koeman they of course mention his scoring ability, but also his uncanny quality of reading the game and being, defensively, in the right spot at the right time to stop someone from scoring. And calling him a dirty player... have you ever watched Italian, Spanish and Portuguese defenders? That’s who’m we started to mimic after 1974. The Dutch did not start out “dirty”, but had to adept to all diving, dirty tackles and unsportsmanlike behaviour opponents were doing. I can remember Ruud Gullit standing in front of camera after a game against Portugal, Gullit was playing for AC Milan at that time, and said that we needed to be willing to play a lot more dirty, like our opponents were doing to win games. Opponents were just there to kick the players instead of the ball.
