saving classical guitar for prison... lol
I love his wittiness lol!
... So in the meantime I can just tapp with a fingertip
Haha brilliant, along with his comments on 21 frets!
@@martin8uqman now i m curious :D i have never heard of 21 frets comment. where can i find it?
@@vuralarslandemir3163 Guthrie made a very tongue in cheek comment that 21 fretted guitars are for grown ups!
Randy came into my shop for classical lessons one Friday. Nobody knew who he was and he wasn't advertising himself. Apparently he really loved Classical guitar. I wish I had been there that day.

It would have been great if the video faded to black and ended after that first sentence
Hahha
The only person I've ever seen use Pick tapping to great effect is Joe Satriani who gets ridiculous speed and clarity out of the pick. Personally I always use my middle finger so I can continue holding the pick like normal. Guthrie is such a bloody legend.
I think what Guthrie understates is, that with pick tapping you get faster speed and clarity than ever with a finger. But the problem is, it's not fluid or versatile technique like finger tapping, because you have to awkwardly switch the pick position. Also, it sounds different, because with finger every note has the same tone, and it's indistinguishable from any other legato, sound wise. In pick tapping, one note sticks out with harsher attack, while others are normal soft legato
Pick tapping is a gimmick. But it can have it's uses in a composed solo, if you want that hyper speed/clarity tapping for a certain part. It's not really just Joe Satriani, anyone can do it and pick tapping is super easy compared to proper finger tapping
@@shredd5705 Disagree with the whole gimmick part. If it serves the song, then it's not a gimmick. Joe Satriani's use of it in Surfing with the Alien was tasty af. A more gimmicky use would be maybe in Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce. It's just there and doesn't really serve the song better than normal tapping would.
@@kiryucovers Gimmick maybe wrong word, but lets say it's not as versatile or seamless with other legato, as normal tapping. Tapping sounds exactly like any other legato, where each note is equal. Pick tapping enters a different realm, where 1 (always highest) note has harsh attack from the pick, other notes soft attack from skin. The only positive effect you can achieve with it, is the ridiculous speed. In theory if someone could do same speed with a finger, it would sound better, but I guess it's impossible
"im saving classical guitar for prison"
hahahahaha
he is such an awesome guy
I love all the awkward pause endings where he stares at the camera for like 5 seconds.
0:49 You are now my hero. Funnier than turning it up to eleven.
Just a minute long but incredibly informative!!!
i found i can make a difference in the sound with the pick.....and that doesn't include the heavy delay or reverb. but the fingers are always going to have a ton more options i feel personally.
@Meelad360 Yes it does. You can get a kind of grating tone going on the you just can't get with the flesh of your finger. A nail gets closer but still not quite as harsh.
Well it gives another sound when you tap with the pick, the sound becomes more sharp and aggresive. (example the start of the solo in One by Metallica) its not about using the pick instead of fingers but, switching between both depending on what sound you want.
also you can tap faster (Y) although to be honest i don't really like the sound of pick tapping :/
+Javier Schiefelbein Well, you can use it creatively. The song infused by rings of saturn has a passage where it pretty much shows what finger tapping and what pick tapping is for.
This looks to be a great learning website but I tried the free trial and could never get anything or anywhere on it. Tech support links did not work along with other links so I finally got someone to try and help but no joy. They charge your credit card (international charge) which I thought was not good but got refunded after several failed tries. I really wish it worked. I will try back in a couple months.
It'll be interesting to see what Guthrie decides to do when he's ready to start classical guitar...
Nice and fun video!
I have nails for classical guitar too,but as long as I keep em short enough i don't have much trouble in tapping. I have to be careful so that nails don't hit other strings etc,but it's not very tricky.Just takes a bit of practice i guess.
I'm only doing Van Halen style though, so any advice is welcome =D
i personally like the jim dunlop jazz 3 picks, the small black ones with the sharp tip
Pick tapping is also much more limited than finger tapping. It's pretty much only used for that fast trill.
@Lesia44 It doesn't do anything, the vibration starts from the fret wire anyways.
This is the first thing I've heard him say that I disagree with. Using the pick in place of finger gives a distinctly different tone and so adds to variety.
@riffmaster93 arrr boiish, Jayzus chap on the guitar, Im praising now!!
hahah, i love Randy Rhoads, it was cool to hear a great like Guthrie make a reference to him. although, i feel like i must say, unless you're a guitar player, you dont really know classical music... people just think of the stuff they learned in music class in elementary school, but even a lot of guitar players dont know true classical. they either use a pick on a nylon string or hold their hand wrong and say its classical. i would have loved to see randy do a vid on classical and show the way
Luv you dude. The beginning looks like you just woke up. Saving classical for prison.. brilliant.
@JRBain7 they should be..they cost like 20 bucks
@MrAppolo777 Great comment that one!
@dirtydonki But you can't do multi finger tapping Arpeggios that way.:)
based on the question asked....he should have just said "YES' and this video is done....
Chris holmes doing it in sleeping in the fire
I always end up agreeing with this dude. Crazy Train solo entered my head just 5 secs into the video lol
I wonder if this guy knows who Alan Moore is, and what does he have to say for himself about any similarities whatsoever.
I love his dry humor lol
well that was usefull.
@b0b1919 yea it's boring in most instances but not out of the question!!! Some metal (deathcore often) guitarist use it to create some cool riffs.. like as a rhythm device.
Somebody care to explain the prison joke?
@OliTheGuitarist :)
he refers to paganini. Cuz paganini played classical guitar whiel he was in prison.. and wrote alot of his music there
I have to say though Pick tapping gives an entirely different sound though, thats the point of the question, isn't it?
guthries a funny man
LMAO saving it for prison. Gotta Love his sense of humor!
“I’m saving classical guitar for prison...” 😂
The only thing I've found useful with picktapping is that I can tap much faster than just with my finger.
he kind of gives a look of disdain when talking about it. the thing is is that pick tapping obviously has a unique sound as opposed to finger tapping. and if it's that sound you're looking for then by all means pick tap.
@MuffenDaniel The classical violinist and guitarist Niccolo Paganini often ended up in jail, due to being a bit of a drunk towards the end of his life. Paganini started learning to play the guitar in prison, due to not having access to a violin, and therefore- he's saving the classical guitar for prison. Like Paganini did.
hahahaha "I'm saving classical guitar for prision" hahahahah
what did he swallow at the end? lol.
hahahaha "In the meantime ..."
LOL, Guitar playing session. I don't really play guitar, so, good luck with that. Gee, thanks, O_o
i have to disagree with him on this.. it gives a different sound than finger tapping. plus you can tap faster if you do it right. Satch does it, first person i saw do it and you don't pull off like you would with your finger. rapid taps with the pick. Different technique different sound it is something a player should have in his tool box. GG doesn't need it because he is awesome with his own stuff. Satch makes it look cool though
Hey! I am a classical guitarist, but he's right, tapping is not very comfortable
@dirtydonki Haha..sure sir..I guess we all have different preferences.xD
@MrAppolo777 lmao! xD
If you go to prison inform me I'll join you😂
@10Dante4 yeah LOL
he reminds me of robert plant but hes a talented player
@MaggotIam Yes, lol
he dont wanna do pick tapping cos that red bear pick costs like 20 bucks or something like that!!!!! xD
A pick tapping seesion without pick tapping...
lol
lol so funny.. i don't understand why he wouldn't just point out the fact that pick tapping is just faster and useful for non moving tapping licks..
I'am saveing a classical guitar for preason....hahahahah KINNNGGGG.....
You pick tap because its quicker than using a finger... Try playing the first tapping part of Satch Boogie with your finger. If you can do it without pick tapping then... you'll never do it.
@frwyguy I think you misunderstand British humour. In no way was it meant as a put down rather he was joking that he would have the time on his hands, if ever sent to prison, to study Classical guitar.
It`s senseless and futile to call someone a dummy on the basis of an assumption.
I do ok tapping with long nails. Probably because they're not super long ...
I didn't know Jesus played guitar? Praise the Lawd!
@theawakener7 LOL
Saving classical guitar for prison... LMAO!!
Satriani trademark!
whats he got planned exactly? lol
@AndyKuffz ONe minute of your life gone!
I take it Guthrie is not really a fan of classical guitar.Good lad.
Hahaha saving classical guitar for prison
@024leoj -.-
when your in prison, the stereotype is that you don't get well groomed(its quite the contrary) and you spend a lot of time with yourself, or one object and maybe other inmates. the way he's using the stereotype is his fingernails are going to grow extra long and therefore be ideal for playing classical guitar... duh >.>
"...Classical guitar for prison" And with that hair he'll do a lot of jamming...ASS jamming that is!
GG is pure sex. What an amazing player. He makes me SICK!
Jesus? Are you?
This is an stupid question.
so why is this vid-again titled pick tapping? its wasting time. . zzzzz
its should been titled "pick tapping is something i didn't prefer!" zzzzzzzzzzz
