    One thing I have learned, never fly long distances in strong winds. With a tail wind you can fly very far very quick, but coming back in that head wind will deplete you battery life very quickly and slow your speed to next to nothing. (which it looks to be the case in your flight). You were blessed to get away with finding your drone, many don't!

    . Good tutorial. I'll keep the wind direction in mind when I fly my Mavick. Thanks for taking the time to put this on UA-cam!!

    At this situation, I would fly back home next to this green hill on the right side. This natural wall should protect you against the strong wind. During day time, there is a component of the wind from the sea to the continent, and the wall capture the air and turn it into an upstream lift force, thus saving energy.
    Anyway, glad you got it back! Great footage!

    may be a stupid question but i'm new to the Mavic but shouldn't it have came home with the auto RTH if only enough power left to RTH.

      Yes, but that can be over ridden as this pilot did. Do not get caught up in the whole range test thing, it's completely pointless, illegal and asking for trouble. It still fails me why people do this then post the video on youtube. Especially in the UK and the USA where the CAA and FAA are so hot on this kind of thing. Stupid, irresponsible and it will only drive to stronger legislation and restrictions for those of us who fly within the law!

    I wouldn't recommend putting it in sport mode- if mine started looking like the battery would run out, you'd see me running back to my mavic faster than it would be flying to me

    Nearly every single video I’ve watched about people losing (or nearly losing) their Mavics have involved the wind.
    As a new Mavic owner this is invaluable to know. Always check the clouds, trees, and have a weather app to check what the weather is doing before flight.

  • @jay1987

    It can often be windier below the tops of the cliffs if the winds are from the sea as they have no where to go. Climbing may have helped in this particular situation

    I have flown that shoreline,beautiful. Looks like you had a busy flight, the Kite surfers were shifting so plenty of wind.
    Glad you got it back, you were right to reduce altitude, maybe go upwind on the outward flight next time.
    Thanks for the video.

  • @jerems61
    @jerems61 7 років тому +3

    From the Kyte surfer, i can see the wind was blowing on the back of the drone at first, so it was easy to get there, but to come back you had to fight against the wind, so all you had to do was:
    Switch to Sport mode stop recording and don't fight against the wind, try to cross it like drawing a rectangle...

    I've seen this so many times! I'm glad you got your bird back, but let me ask you 1. Did you have your phone number on the drone? 2. Did you have a tracking device like a Trackimo? 3. Whenever doing range tests fly against the wind on your outbound leg, then when returning home you'll have a tailwind to help you.

    As having flow small airplanes, Head Winds are always fuel consumptions on any aircrafts so with drones, head winds also drains batteries quickly. And always put your phone number on your drone so If Found, the person can call you.

    I've seen a ton of people do this exact thing with their drone. They will go out and when the return home alerts start sounding, they ignore it because their battery level is good. What they fail to realize is the heavy wind when coming home will delete their battery faster than when they went out; head wind vs tail wind.

  • @amima42
    @amima42 7 років тому

    Also important to note that Mavic Pro thrust, it's ability to flight against wind, changes over time. The lower it's battery is, the harder it is to fly against wind. I had an experience when my Mavic was holding the position perfectly for the first 10 minutes of flight and then it began to drift, it could not fight the wind with lower battery (the wind did not charge). Almost lost Mavic, had to go after it in the direction of the wind.

    Yes, it's worth bearing in mind how much battery power it takes to compensate for high winds. The Mavic can work this out 'on the fly' (pardon the pun). This is why the remaining time is dropping so fast (it worked out how much battery would be left if the wind stayed the same)

      I don't own a Mavic (yet), but I think according to RTFM drone can still be manually controlled in horizontal plane. It will continue descending and land no matter what, no way to stop that.

  • @alexfarr3321
    @alexfarr3321 7 років тому

    Even if you're not flying fully against the wind, the stabilisation the Mavic performs in order to get smooth footage really kills the battery on a windy day. Keep an eye out on the wind velocity warnings! :)

    • @joeglennaz
      @joeglennaz 7 років тому

      And this is why you should NOT be too scared to try a long range test you just have to KNOW what you are doing. There are several basic mistakes made here that simply reading the manual, watching the tutorial videos or other youtube videos would have taught you. Sound like you need to get on your computer now and get your manual out now BEFORE something happens. Do you know how to handle a fly away? do you know how to fly in ATTI mode? Do you know that that little pamphlet that comes in the box is NOT the manual and you must download it? Do you know about the DJI Blog where other experienced Pilots can help you? I have many videos on my site most for Phantoms but the basics still apply. www.arisedrone.com go to videos.

The battrey is 40% and it 3 km away from home I imedietly freaks out after realsied that and i just went full speed 19m/s and top it off with the low battrey warning(it becouse of the maximum speed and strong wind) and it safely reaches it at whopping 13% of battrey life
    So moral of the story is don't full speed and just press the return to home buttons you be fine. BECOUSE I FORGOT TO ENABLE THE RETURN YO HOME BUTTONS(and i have to navigate and land it myself)

    Boa noite João. Ao ver o teu vídeo, lembrei-me do sufoco que hoje passei em Sintra. Estava a preparar-me para fazer o take-off num sitio que achava que era seguro e mais próximo do local que queria filmar e estranhamente a app DJI GO 4 estava sempre a dizer Aircraf Disconnect e logo em seguida Aircraft Connect. Reinicei a app, desliguei e voltei a ligar o telf. dado que quis confirmar se tinha acionado a Depuração USB ( alegadamente diz-se que a não ativação desta opção é um dos motivos para a APP falhar) e do nada ganho sinal de GPS. Levanto vôo, por coincidência estava ao pé de um pequeno lago, a app pergunta se tenho autorização para voar por estar numa zona restrita, digo que sim ( por esta altura não sabia que não se podia voar em Sintra devido a Restrições Militares) começo a manobrar o drone e perco controlo do Mavic, ele começa a descer em direção à àgua sem que nada pudesse fazer. Só tenho discernimento para carregar no pause, nada feito, carrego RTH e nada e de repente já próxima de entrar na àgua fica a pairar sobre o lago e não percebi porquê!!! Será que ele reconheceu que o terreno não era seguro para aterrar? Duvido, a app está off e os sensores a vermelho! Será que devido à zona restrita as autoridades desligaram-me o sinal??? Fiquei sempre na dúvida. O certo é que ficou ali largos segundos a pairar ( eu suava já), do nada reganho sinal de GPS consigo levantá-lo e trazê-lo para perto de mim e lá consegui agarrá-lo (ufa!). Desculpa o testamento, mas queria partilhar contigo esta situação para ter a tua opinião: Porquê que quando fiquei sem sinal e iniciou automaticamente o Landing em vez do RTH que estava devidamente acionado e configurado? Porquê é que quando ele começou a descer ficouem hover (pairar) sobre a água se supostamente não havia sinal de GPS o que segundo o manual o Mavic não tem sensores de terreno ativos?Obrigado pelo teu vídeo .abraço

    • @JtypeR
      @JtypeR  6 років тому

      FreeRyder obrigado pela exposição. Infelizmente tenho ouvido alguns relatos de situações destas.
      Penso que o MAVIC ter tentado retornar à base foi resultado de uma prolongada falha na ligação ao comando. Mas se tentou aterrar noutro local que não o de partida, pode ser um indicador que a qualidade do sinal/GPS não era boa quando descolou e portanto não fixou o local com precisão. Também pode ser o caso de nas configurações estar programado aterrar no local presente em vez de retornar à base... Se o estado da bateria for insuficiente, penso que ele opta por aterrar no local e ignora o retorno.
      Possivelmente o MAVIC não aterrou/amarou por reconhecer que o local não seria apropriado.
      Em relação ao local ter restrições militares e haver algum controle para anular frequências dos Drones, bom... se fosse nos EUA ou algo assim, até acreditava. Mas em Portugal não se sabe sequer se houve algum roubo na base de Tancos, quanto mais se existe ou não Drones a voar numa área tão grande. Houvesse essa tecnologia e com certeza que os idiotas que vão voar para o aeroporto não saiam impunes. Mas as nossas leis não estão feitas para os prevaricadores e sim para os idiotas que acreditam na justiça e tentam cumprir a lei.
      O que recomendo é ter sempre o máximo de bom senso que é ainda mais importante que cumprir a lei (que naturalmente deve ser cumprida), antes de descolar ou ir mais longe, garantir que está tudo funcional e que as condições ambientais são apropriadas.
      Se houver alguma questão/problema mais técnico com o equipamento, o ideal é reportar à DJI ou ir a um centro de assistência para falar com algum mais especializado e competente que eu.
      De resto, espero que te divirtas ;)

    • @GG86ful
      @GG86ful 6 років тому

      João Tiago R obrigado. :)
      Já sei do que se tratou e infelizmente é algo que afeta um grande número de utilizadores do Mavic. Por algum motivo durante quando se inicia o take-off e os sensores registam o RTH enquanto o drone ascender a uma certa altura. Algum tempo depois o drone começa a subir sozinho sem que esteja a executar qualquer comando e quando tento "puxá-lo" para baixo o Mavic inicia o auto-landing sem que se possa cancelar no x ou fazer RTH. Ele vai aterrar diretamente no solo sem que possas fazer nada. Deixo-te o link de um video de alguém teve o mesmo problema ua-cam.com/video/mlhhrInoDns/v-deo.html e se foresao google e escreveres "Mavic initiates auto-landing" vais ficar surpreso com a quantidade de pessoas que reportam o mesmo problemas. Reportei à DJI e responder ontem dizendo para confirmar uma série de configurações de RC, Firmware, Sensores e afins que tenho a certeza que fiz. A questão terá que ver penso eu com a versão do Firmware. Tenho lido que quando isso acontece deve-se desligar os sensores VPS e o problema fica resolvido. Ainda não tive oportunidade de experimentar mas logo que o faça darei feedback. Alguma vez isso aconteceu com o teu Mavic?
      Abraço

    This whole 50% there means 50% back is a terrible way to fly, especially when you understand how batteries work. The lower the battery gets in % means less volts, that then equates to less energy so the drone has to suck more juice draining the battery even faster. Next time you fly, time the difference between 100% and 80% compared to 60% and 40%, and you will see what I’m talking about. When you are at 50% and that far out, you might as well be at 30. Good rule of thumb to ensure you don’t have this happen is to double your estimated return % and to make sure you are using proper recharge cycles on your lithium ion batteries.
    IE, don’t drain them below 20 to 25% as this damages them, and also, let them cool down before throwing them on a charger after flying.

    Primeiro que tudo parabéns não só por este vídeo mas pelo canal todo!
    Ando algum tempo pra comprar um só ainda não me decidi qual o modelo, pelo que tenho lido e observado talvez um Mavic pro será a escolha. Lanço-te um desafio: entre meio de Abril até meio de Junho todos os anos grandes corvinas( peixes) entram pelo Tejo acima e vão desovar nas águas do estuário zona entre Poço do Bispo e Expo, quando vires um ajuntamento invulgar de barcos e kayaks á pesca nessas zonas já sabes do que se trata, não é todos os dias que se consegue pescar peixes com 30kg ou mais, e em território costeiro como o nosso, propunha-te um vídeo desses momentos seria bem espetacular e com certeza visualizações não te iriam faltar. Poderás sempre dar uma olhadela pelo meu canal dedicado inteiramente á pesca de kayak.
    Continua com esses vídeos espetaculares !!! Ganhaste mais um subscritor👏👏👏.Grande abraço.

      You did not know that before you purchased your drone? It's been that way for over a year easy... You gotta do research before you buy stuff. I've made a whole living off people telling me yea I don't like reading manuals and such. They crash their drones because they don't set them up right etc. Now what can you do?? You can apply for a COW Certificate of Waiver. I don't know if it will work for you or not but I'm trying to think of anything for you. I do feel for you. Keep in mind you can always take a little drive out of the area and fly it. I don't know how far you would have to go. Look for a good drone instructor in your area try www.dronelife.com and if you have no luck call or visit www.dronelawpro.com. Good luck!

      All of DC is a no fly zone for drones. so ironically even those smaller selfie drones are illegal. check out AirMap. it has FAA based maps that can help you find clear air space to fly in. If your still within 5mi of any airport. be sure to call the tower and clear your flight. :-)

    All drone pilots should aware terms like groundpseed and airspeed (DJI GO shows only groundspeed).

    Too risky.. no need to take that 1000 dollar risk just to see how far it goes.

    It DID go very well, from the drone's perspective. It performed flawlessly.
    The drone - or better said, DJI - can not account for full grown-ups who don't know the effects of wind on flying devices and are not even clued-in when viewing its effects while passing a bunch of kites swirling around like angry windmills.
    (...and, from that last text entry, you're all set up for a new mishap. In the geographical area where you fly, the Mavic can NOT reach 7 Kms, as the controller is software-limited to 5...)

    How did you reach 5.5 km in Europe?

    • @gustavgames
      @gustavgames 7 років тому

      if you point the antenna's good to the aircraft and fly in a area with low interference it will be able to even get more than 5.5km

      But DJ says it's the limit in Europe 4km

    • @gustavgames
      @gustavgames 7 років тому

      tomas eigelis its not a 'limit' its just a calculation based on the power of the antenna and the resistance in the air, in europe the allowed antenna power is less than in the US so the calculated distance will be lower, however this is only theoritacally and in real life you can go much farder when there are no obstacles and it is a sunny day. i flew my mavic today (netherlands, europe) for 4.5 KM and still got half of the signal. the only think that dji does limit is the hight (500M) you cant go for example to 501M even if the signal is good.
