    It's interesting how similar these are to tortillas even down to the roti lady. When I was staying in Mexico there was definitely a tortilla lady in town that most people bought their tortillas from.

    On recommendation from a south Asian friend, I walked up to a nondescript suburban house and handed over some money and got a bag of vegetarian (potato and pea) and another of chicken samosas with a small jar of chutney. They were the best I ever had and have judged every samosa since against them.

      There used to be a house in my 'burbs where these mexicans would make tacos out of their kitchen and ran an illegal/underground restaurant.

    Just a heads up, what Priya is refering to as Roti is aka Chapati. A lot of restaurants sell Tandoori Roti as just "Roti", while what Priya is cooking with is the traditional Roti that many restaurants sell as "Chapati" or "Phulka Roti"/"Fulka Roti"

      I spent some time in Tanzania where it was called Chapati, I've always heard roti in relation to Indian food.

      @@GERBZ95 Been living in India for a while now, and here its called Chapati in restaurants, whereas the Tandoori Roti which is made of AP flour aka Maida and cooked in a clay oven is called Roti. However, in households the two terms are used interchangeably.

    I'm Indian from the UK and as much as I think some stuff that American Indians say and do is weird, I also know that people like Priya are passionate about holding onto their culture and also it's so interesting to see and learn how they maintain both Indian and American identities through their food which is much harder to do there than in the UK

      @@fiveohfivethree Haha daal and rice is the ultimate comfort food, I will just have a bowl of that for dinner sometimes. I'm glad that most Brits love Indian food so much but also most of them know only the oily/meaty curries and not the food we actually eat at home, which is fair because for us, all the kinds of vegetables we cook with might be scary for fans of Brindian cuisines. Our home food is always much healthier, cleaner and easier on the palette, I will always love that more than at the restaurants

      Uhmm, you realized that they are both flatbread right?
      Roti is the hindi word to describe it.
      It's just that we tend to called them using their natives name instead of translating it to our own languages.
      But either way, even though the ingredients might be slightly different, it's still the same thing. Variations, that's what we called them.

      Putting chutney on the bottom wouldn't work, chutney needs to feel fresh and cold, if you cook it in the oven the whole experience would change for the worse.
      Not disagreeing, just explaining why chutney (sauce) on the bottom like in New York style wouldn't work.
