- IBM / Lenovo x3650 M3 where I build a RAID 1 on two disks, a RAID 5 on five disks, and make a Global Hot Spare out of one disk.
This x3650 M3 has an ServeRAID M5015 SAS/SATA Controllers for System x. This Is a prety good controller,, but I did not bother updating the firmware for this server or the controller,, witch would have fixed a lot of my problems... But we get there, at the end :-)

Did I understand? The hot spare is disk the system only use when a raid disk is failed, the system rebuilds that drive on the hot spare and you have your redundant raid 5 again, when you change the disk it rebuilds that with the hot spare and the spare goes down again
The idea is that if the disk fails at like 02.25 in the middle of the night, the rebuild will start , and you save like 6-ish hours, if people comes to work at about 8.00am,,
When you now replaces the failed drive,, it becomes the new hot spare.

I believe the reason why you can only see 8 drives is due to the wires and backplane. The two sff wires carry 4 hard drive signals each, totaling 8 full lanes for drives. The backplane for the x3650 is probably not a SAS Expander backplane, which would allow for more than 8 drives to connect through those two wires. They are probably just backplanes that allow for hot swapping. I believe you can verify this by looking for a SAS logic chip on the backplane, which would be present on a expander backplane

I have some questions here sir,
if there is a Hard Drive Failure on 1 of the RAID 5, we need to change it right?
if the changed hard drive with another drive that outside of the server slot then what is the purpose of the Hot Spare?
I always thought that hot spare is just sitting there waiting until there is one of the RAID 5 Disk Failure and we just need to swap it with the failed Disk.
but you said here at 18:16 "if one of these drives failed will take the rule of one of the disk"
what does that mean sir? do we do not need to change the disk because the hot spare will do the job?
or do we need to change the hot spare slot to the slot at the failed disk?
or do we still need to change the failed disk with the new hard drive? if so why do we need the global hot spare?
I'm sorry for my noob question, I'm still learning and I hope you can help me out.

At work we have several x3650 M3 with 16 hard drives in it. I don't remember the exact model of RAID controller. How I wish I had a second backplane and some more disks to play with :D Nice video :)

+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) Hey ! I took the time to look at my IBM serveraid M5014 and you're right ! it doesn't support more than 8 HDD :/ That's why the server come with only one backplane. BUT you can request this ( publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systemx/documentation/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.sysx.7945.doc/t_installing_sas_sata_8_pac_hdd_option.html) from IBM to add another 8 HDD to the server. Mine (7945) is compatible :)

I found that 160 gb drives are ok for playing with os, they contain the os i usually use them alone or in a raid 1 for the os. Instead of buying low end 256 gb ssds

I have two IBM X3650 servers and in one of them I have configured a raid 1 with two 300 GB disks. but the server is damaged and does not start. how can I mount these disks on another server without erasing the information that is vital to me. This Raid 6 stuff is always a problem especially for us for whom its just a home hobby of sorts, it is invariably an extra expense... with the cost of disks being cheaper these days, people are always saying you must go for the security of raid 6 but that means buying a licence for R6 for your cheap ebay bought raid card or being stuck with R5 (with a hot swop) as I am..

@@MyPlayHouse Thanks a lot for the response. I have investigated the issue. Problem is that RAID controller doesn't even reccognise the drive no unconfigured good/bad or nothing. Its not even reconising the replaced drive due to some reason.
Would changing/clearing configuration delete my data(i know it would remove the virtual drive) and is it possible to remove configuration of just one virtual drive/group at a time.

You need to have a RAID card in there of cause. An HBA card will not show up in the same way.
If the server is running in Uefi, you can to configure via. the biso. and it is also possible to set it up using : datacentersupport.lenovo.com/dk/en/downloads/ds501345 - MegaRAID Storage Manager Application for Windows.

Yes this is possible, and not to hard. I would recommend,, backup and all of that, and you shout shout down the server and do this from the Raid setup. And if you remove all partitions from the drives before, there is less chance of making a mistake. If there is a foreign old raid setup on the drives, you have to delete that first, and that will be where it is to easy to accidentally delete your two RAID1 on the 146GB's

I have an IBM x3850 x5 , I recently reinstalled windows 2022 and it worked. The led lights on my hard disks no longer light (the green lights used to blink continuously before). I have checked raid and it seems fine. What could possibly cause this. I even reconfigured it. Any ideas? I would appreciate it.

Now you shout get the option to expand the virtual volume, to get the more space,,, be very careful,, this is the fastest way to lose all your data. :-/

I have a server with ServeRAID-MR-10i SAS/SATA controller and I can't configure it as JBDO. That possible to create JBDO storage (TrueNAS) with IBM x3650 M3?? Somebody can i help me?
Well the ServeRAID-MR-10i will give you pretty good raid options. But if you really want JBDO it does not do that : lenovopress.lenovo.com/tips0735
Maybe you can config each disk as a RAID0,, but for TrueNAS you really want a HBA controller.
There are a lot of people trying to build servers of different types but I think that they should not reinvent the wheel when there are many old web servers available if one knows where to look, I think that 5TB SSD drives might have been a better choice and anyway old mechanical drives are not always reliable.
+DAVID GREGORY KERR Are SSD good enough to be used in servers where the disks are constantly written to? Have they got past the million writes limitation of SSD's? I have found most mechanical hard drives extremely reliable, most problems I've seen have been caused by the drives being knocked/moved whilst operating, I guess if you run them for several years the motor bearings etc can wearout and fail.

I can´t remember ever doing that,, but I would expect so. You would have no issues with Server 2016,, as that OS would have all the Server hardware drivers, as the server is from 2014.
But IBM servers are usually really easy with drivers,, so just give Server 2003 a go :-)

I want to add another raid 1 array to my server but the raid controller would not prompt me to press ctr+H and open the raid menu before the system attempts to boot, it only allows me to open the raid controller menu after it attempts to boot, which means I have to interrupt the booting process by pulling out the boot drives. The last time I did this the boot array disappeared and I lost the data on those boot drives. How can I fix this? I need to access the arrays before the system boots
On the x3650 M3, you can access the raid controller from within the uefi bios,, as well.
Sir if i never set raid 1 in my server can i just add second hdd with same type and size, and configure raid1, will the data in first hdd will be erased or not? Thx
Avv I am not sure about that,, and this is the quickest way to lose all your data,, it would also depend on the raid controller,,, I would only do this, if I could test it first.

RAID 5 is A lot better then no RAID,, for single servers like this,, it would be okay,, and with a hot spare to start rebuilding a bad array as soon as it fails,,,it is okay,,, It's not safe enough for like my 14 disk array.

I'm running a 6 × 4TB RAID-5 array on an LSI 9260-16i card with 6 WD Reds.
The write speed is around 300 MB/s which is not too bad considering the 135MB/s throughput of a single drive.
I had 1 drive fail on me yesterday, replaced it and rebuild was just over 10 hours.
I would suspect the 10k or 15k SAS drives that Morten is using are faster than the WD Reds in both writes and rebuild times?
+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) I've had back luck with raid one and five personally. Sometimes they just won't rebuild your raid volume after replacing a dead drive. Maybe that has more to do with the controller my Poweredges use then Raid.

My server motherboard FRU : 00W2671 failed, I installed FRU : 00AM209. Now I am not able to configure Raid 5 on the server. Only raid 0 & 1 option coming in web bios.
Also the license for mega raid 5 is not visible in web bios.

Yarh,, this is something that we forget to back up :-/ If you have no dokumentation,, I think that it is lost :-/
How to back up bios data, ? I have 12 nos of working server system x 3650 M4, I can take backup from them if you can tell me the procedure.
Some manuals were provided along with server I will check them.
There is an backup function in the IMM... or you will have to have saved the originally FOD key from IBM/Lenovo
Hello, I am with IBM x3650m3 server at home for test purposes and test environment. I am with two SAS 2.5 HDD with 2x464 GB capacity. When I setup RAID1the available capacity is 270 GB? When I setup RAID0 the available capacity is 500+ GB. Can someone explain me why it's happen in this way? Thanks. How can I use more space? I won't to use VMware Esxi 5.5,I migrate right now from RAID0 to RAID1, from Server 2012 R2+ VMware Workstation 12 to VMware Esxi 5.5.

I`m have WS_2008 R2 enterprise. Problem i solved because windos don`t have driver for raid contromer. Only download orginal driver from IBM side end windows start install.

Excellent this video. I have two IBM X3650 servers and in one of them I have configured a raid 1 with two 300 GB disks. but the server is damaged and does not start. how can I mount these disks on another server without erasing the information that is vital to me. Thanks in advance for your comment.

Thank You very much! Yes this is possible,,, and a good video suggestion!! If you put the disks in the new server, you can in the raid controller "import foreign configuration" and the driver will be available in the new server with everything on them.

Thank you very much for your timely response. Now my other server is also damaged and does not turn on. Take a disk and place it on a pc with linux ubuntu and in /dev/ me it shows it as sdb and its partitions sdb1,sdb2… sdb7 but when trying the command
# sudo mount -a /dev/sdb1 /mnt
He tells me that he can not read the superblock.What can I do to recover the information? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
I bought 2 HDD but i don't have raid card on my server. The disk is plugged on the hdd backplane but the disk isnt detected. Do you think i have to buy raid card ? If yes which one ?
I have ibm x3650 m3 server
So where do the backplane go ? If it goes to the connector on the system board,, maybe that is disabled in bios,,,
