You can say that again. It is truly baffling to watch the US constantly try to prove that they are good enough while shooting themselves In the foot based on how the federation operates. The truth is you had a coach that knew how to WIN the WC in Jurgen Klinsmann but the American players could not handle him. they got rid of him for an American coach and the differences are glaring. Now, they think they can get some of the world's best coaches to take the helm. dream on... or wake up.

And that is what maybe 2 or 3 coaches in the entire world that may or may not be available? You got results. You had a coach that got the team to the World Cup after they couldn't even qualify out of the CONCACAF region.
Tab might be a decent option but I would prefer the best manager we can get from Europe

Me too i've lost my beloved dad back in high school i went throght depression it was hard time that effected my life and my education but thank god i was able to pull my self out it now am cybersecurity engeneer as my dad wanted me to be i wish he's pround of me i really want to meet him and tell him about all the struggles that i faced and how i turned to be love you dad ❤

Truth is that this gives me hope. I do not think US soccer would have moved if fans hadn't made the noise we did. So, this is a reminder that we can push change.
Wrong. The reason USSF decided to fire him was because the media personalities on ESPN, Fox Soccer and even as far Barstool making a big deal about the Copa failure pushed USSF to fire GGG. If it wasn't for that, fans adding pressure wouldn't do the trick.
After all, USSF rehired GGG despite the fans bitching and threatening to stop watching and supporting the team.
They're going to pick Cherundolo because our Fed doesn't want anyone that will rock the money boat or be "difficult." Any real coach will demand too much autonomy and control over scheduling.

GGG did what needed to be done after the disaster at Trinidad. He got a talented group of kids to come play for the USMNT that had other options. Dest, Musah, Balogun, Reyna, etc. They're here now. Early 20's...bright futures ahead of them. GGG did that. NOW, we need a manager that can take these talented young men and move them to the next level. GGG was not capable of that. A manager that will DEMAND more from them and not be their "friend". Toughen up these guys. Make them EARN the right to wear our uniform.

I think we’ve been outclassed tactically in the last two major tournaments. I’m hoping for an outsider, preferably a European manager. English doesn’t have to be his first language.

The USA needs a Spanish manager. The Spanish are really good at football/soccer, and they also know a lot about tactics.
When you mentioned his behind the back bounce passes I threw up in my mouth a little. I've been Berhalter out since his first appointment. I never ever ever had confidence in him. After the World Cup I was glad his contract was up and we were finally going to move on... Until we didn't. This has been the longest slog of my US Soccer fandom. From Bora to Steve to Bruce to Bob to Jurgen and everyone in between, I never really blamed the coach. Until I witnessed Greggs lack of ability. From his reliance on MLS players to his formations to his tactics to his adjustments to his subs, I never once felt like he knew what he was doing. Everything was just random choices of what we had available. And just like a 5 year old, sometimes you're going to land on the right solution out of pure luck. I still have ZERO confidence in Matt Crocker and Cindy Parlow...I think they're part of the problem and need to be moved on too. So I'm not too excited at seeing what they come up with. And if it's Cherundelo I'm going to throw up again, because he's simply not ready. If it's an American coach from MLS I'm not going to be happy. Our starting 11 plays in Europe. We need a coach that understands that foundation. For the love of all that is holy, bring in a European coach who speaks English and can get the best out of this group.

Its not the team, its 100% on the Manager and even more so on USSF, US Soccer and the complicit MLS who has contaminated US Soccer since 1993. If you don't understand this, watch the video of Chuck Daly, the US Dream team of 1992 and the college players that beat them in practice.
I agree that the team plays soft. They have heart but the wrong type to compete against Colombia. Colombia played hard, had that fierce hunger to win, and looked like they were having fun. We are missing all of these. Some US players looked nervous and were sure they belonged out on the field.
Agreed. But most of these players don’t have issues at the club level. Many of them earning playing time and some starting in clubs in top leagues. When they collectively come together they form cliques and some players get finger pointed others get breaks. They make excuses and seem content with their results. They fall apart when things don’t go their way and lack of focus and preparation ….etc etc etc. ALL this is reparable with good manager and being held accountable will go a long way. . No one’s roster spot is safe….earn it first system needs to be employed. AND with better tactical execution and better adapting to play and prepare for your opponent Things will change fast.

@@ricomajestic No shit!! The whole point of Chuck Daly messing with the formation and the lineup was to show these superstars that they are beatable and to bring them together as a team. And the point, which appears to be lost on you, is that the manager has immense control over the tactics, player dynamics, and who the team plays to the point that a group of much inferior college kids could beat them. The manager set that up. Just like a horrible manager like Berhalter can completely influence the outcome, the tactics and how a team looks on the pitch. These US players are the best group of players ever to be fielded, and yet Berhalter isn't capable of setting them up to win. Berhalter will NEVER coach a good team in Europe because of his deficiencies. That is a fact.

To answer your question @ 21 minutes, Gregg's brother was the CEO of the USSF. His hiring on both occasions was nepotism. In fact, much of the USSF staff are friends & family of former players that get their feet in the door. Not the best way to run a company or corporation of any kind.
In a program with a winning mentality, we wouldn't have had to wait and wonder what would happen to Gregg after the Copa America.

I think Benitez is a decent shout actually, he'd be able to set-up for tournament football and while it might not be pretty it would get results and he'd probably be happy to take the job too
US fans really need to lower their expectations and get behind whoever comes in. The chances of a big name coming in are slim simply due to finances as you’d have to pay the womens coach exactly the same and I don’t see that happening. If you could get Bielsa that would be huge for the US now that Uruguay are out of the Copa. You only have two years to get this team organised and competitive for the world cup and you need someone who’s been there and done it before and theres few with his experience at international tournament football.

Not happening. US fans need to lower their expectations and get behind whoever comes in. There are plenty of decent coaches out there and you shouldn’t be disappointed if its not a big name. It's amazing how quickly Matt Crocker went from being a "fresh voice" to "part of the problem." I have no faith in that guy. He not only rehired GGG, fought to keep him.
As a long time manager of multiple FIFA campaigns, i think i could manage the USMNT. I have years of experience managing and scouting potential talent, fitting multiple personalities into a cohesive unit, maximizing multiple on-pitch producers into the best 11 to win. I understand the modern footballer, and i employ a rigorous counter-press system designed to restrict the opposition being on the ball, while also turning defense into attack. I'm confident i can instill these essentially European standards onto the US roster.

Simple - Gregg was a Nepo Baby hire, because hise brother Jay was high up in the USSF hierarchy. On the re-hire, USSF had basically delegated the job of finding another coach to another UTTER MEDOCRITY EXACTLY LIKE Gregg! What has Matt Crocker ever accomplished as a Sporting Director? The teams he worked for were all lower level relegation fodder!
So, Crocker needs to be FIRED ALSO!
My bet is that Crocker will hire another MLS mediocrity - Cherundolo.
Get Kopp or another experienced European coach. But whichever coach we get needs to play with the talent we have, not the talent we wish we had. Berhalter wanted us to always pass out of the back like we were Spain. We're not. Could our best player, Pulisic, start on any of the top 4 Euro finalist? Could he even make the bench?
Poetic, passionate, and intelligent as always. I really enjoyed this. I feel like it cannot be an American. There will be so much unneeded pressure placed on them regardless of their football acumen. They already will have the prodigious pressure of hosting a WC they don’t need the Bethalter Redux tag that will inevitably come from this kind of hire.
Steve Cherundolo seems like the pick that the USSF would make, even though I would hope they move beyond MLS and go for a manager with experience and major wins like a Klopp.
i think it's pretty obvious that the reason gregg got rehired after the world cup is because gio reyna's family blackmailed him and the other candidate (jesse marsch) isn't good enough to justify going along with what the blackmailer demands. you can argue with the overall recruitment strategy but you gotta stand by the coach in those circumstances.
i would take david moyes as manager. he brought americans to everton, has won a european trophy, can get limited squads to get results, wouldn't tolerate blackmail, and would probably select players who actually play for their club teams.
Pellegrino Mattarazo, Herve, Ancellotti, Henry, Mancini after he gets fired from France, Walid Regragui... We should hire Wenger as US soccer president or technical director as well. Maybe David Wagner.

USSF should go in on Herve Renard. He has a proven track record in international football, including helping small teams win tournaments. He’s also out of contract soon and should be affordable under their budget
I'll not be following US soccer if any MLS coach besides Wilfried Nancy is selected. Nancy should be the only one even seriously considered. That being said the US can, and should, do better than another MLS coach.

the problem goes way beyond the manager, it's the entirety of us culture across the board. entitled, corrupt and arrogant.
If Klopp…who would be my dream choice by far…is too much of a stretch, I really think Ponchetino is a “gettable” alternative. He seems to have lost a bit of luster and motivation with his exists from PSG and Chelsea, so I think he would look at the USMNT job as a way of getting back on the big stage. He’s still young, coaches and attractive style of football and has a lot of status in the football world. Players will respect him and more importantly, so will the club teams our players play for. His has roots in Argentina, so being on this side of the world isn’t foreign to him. He would be the big (realistic) hire that we the fans, the media, the donors/sponsors and…most importantly…the USMNT players, are looking for.
I would think Pulisic & Poch would not be a good fit.

Berhalter was hired because his brother wanted his own brother to be coach. Simple as that. He was rehired because of incompetence and the federation cares about money and revenue, not about winning soccer games.
Hello Rog. I played a different game to football, but I always loved the US will to win. Despite really being a B team player, I won city trophies as an individual and with a team.
I was not a skillful county player, but had people shaking heads at how I used to beat some who were, by finding a way.
I do not think US is ready for a big name manager. You need someone who is willing to go back to how young players are spotted and brought through.
It is no coincidence that Spain and England, who copied their academies, have been in men and women's finals at different age levels.
In the interim, you need someone who can make players punch above their weight. Forget the current team players. It may be they need some new faces who can do the job for the team. The blue collar "make it work" spirit I encountered all over the US, when I toured the country, is still there, I am sure.

No, that's the thing. They (the USSF) didn't really consider this until now. They are under the gun now. And they better hire someone who is not associated with their corruption.
It's not about coaches going to Europe. It's about Europe coaches coming here and telling us how it's done.

I believe he reason Greg B was hired was hired was 1) he was a longtime US soccer insider and former USMNT player. U.S Soccer is in love with having former players coach. 2) He looks a little bit like Michael Bradley.

The Players choosing or vouching for the Coach, point:
Even if you have a team that won the World Cup, we should still have a problem with the concept that a players who influence the hiring or rehiring of a coach would be good.
I don't think it works on a club level, and nobody should think it works on a National Team level.
I do however think that the players can have an input, but the decision or.. should stay in the hands of the USSF.
The USSF or Matt Crocker should follow the USMNT Players on Social Media to get a sense of what they like or don't like about their Coach, but just to keep the train going in the same direction.

we know why he got hired, his brother hired him. they kept him because they wanted to avoid a law suit after the gio situation. Ggg is a good ole boy and won't rock the boat. ussf wants coaches they can control and not embarrass them. klinsmann opposed them vocally many times, told the players they shouldn't play in mls. ussf doesn't like that. they run the program like a mom and pop shop.
I do think there's something you aren't recognizing...and that's where our players ARE vs. where they WERE. Klinsmann was the person who INSISTED that American players need to play in Europe. Sure...earlier players did play in Europe (a few) but he was the first to "insist" on it. As a uniform practice. We still have some who grow up in the MLS system but we have FAR more players playing in Europe now than ever before. US Soccer is still in its adolescence in that aspect. This is a work in progress as opposed to the well established tradition that it is in the European club system.

Leadership! Charisma! He is a WINNER. Every player he played with says he is the best captain and leader they have ever been around. That say a lot, when other superstars will run through a wall for you. And, in the Overlap podcast just a week ago, Roy said he would love the opportunity to coach a National Team. This is the dude! And, he is a viable candidate, which many names being tossed around are not.

With such a disfunctional federation, entitled players who think they are god's gift, and wasted run up prep for the world cup, anybody who wants the job at this point in the schedule probably shouldn't have it. And I think it's a good bet that management is nowhere close to being prepared to properly search/find a new manager. So, unfortunately, we should probably not be focused on 2026, but rather 2030 at this point. That likely means another caretaker manager for 2026. Meh.

Have a look at the clubs represented by the bulk of our roster for this tournament. Then look at how many aren't even starting regularly for those clubs. See how many of the players that start regularly actually played for a team that won their league or finished 2nd. The coaching continues to be a problem, but Jurgen Klinsmann was right: we're not demanding enough from our players in their development. We're delusional if we think we're winning a World Cup with players who actually won their domestic league getting limited minutes at the international level and building rosters with players from clubs like Palermo in Serie B.

As a Canadian, the US team needs a strong Mexico, so do we. More games outside the region, yes, but we're all going to play CONCACAF opponents more often, and so celebrating a weak Mexico might feel good because we get the win, but its not helpful for actual development. Same with Jamaica and the other "middling" CONCACAF teams

Well said. .... Berhalter was only hired because of his brother Jay Berhalter's position in USSF. Its well known and why many of us knew he was a dud from day one.
No Rog. He created an atmosphere of comfortability. These players didn't feel pressure. They felt their place was assured on the team, there was no accountability, there was no consequences for losing or not progressing. Who did he beat? 0 wins against top 15 international opposition, other than Mexico. The worst Mexico team in decades. Coaching flaws, stubbornness to play "his system" no matter what. Questionable call ups. Not taking advantage to see young players, instead opting to call up mediocre MLS players for friendlies. "Brotherhood?" More like coddled and entitled.

I think the regular US Fan senses that very point.
You can see that the USMNT under Gregg Berhalter 2.0 doesn't represent the American Identity. No Grit whatsoever against Columbia in the 5-1 or against Panama in the 2-1, losses.
It's very very very obvious that Grit helps win games even on the MLS level.
A player should give more to the National Team then to the Club, and how did Gregg miss this point, he knows very well that Grit wins and Players must give more to the National Team vs Clubs ????

Here is what doesn't make sense on Gregg Berhalter's record.
- We're being told by some he did a great job with the USMNT
- We hear from others that this is the Golden Generation
- And we hear that the USMNT is now a strong national team
We have to see evidence of the above, i.e. matches results.
The numbers of games lost is 15 in the first 4 years, than 7 in the last year and a half..
So,
Does qualifying for the world cup makes you a great coach or so so coach or was it luckk?
Does losing 22 games in 5 years and half make you a great Team, the best in Concacaf?
Is losing on home soil to Columbia 5-1 and two more games after that in copa America what the USSF planned for when the hired or rehired Gregg?
Of course the answer is NO, so why do some observers try to create something big out of the ordinary?
If Gregg Berhalter is a Great Coach we should see that in the USMNT's results
If he's the best ever then why didn't he at least match Bruce Arena's record of 2002 when we player the Quarter Final.

There is a general culture surrounding the USMNT (I don't know who) leading our Men team to basically low standards such as considering qualifying to the world Cup a Great achievement.
1994 is long gone and the current Soccer Fan generation wants a better product from the USMNT like does the USWNT. If our Women can do it, so should our Men.
At least make it to the Quarter Finals more often.

Everybody (almost) thought the Netherlands will beat England, and for a second after the start of the match it looked that way. But, because the ENG Coach remained positive and the ENG team made the necessary adjustments, when they got the chance to tie the game they did so.
So in this example, all you needed to do is remain Positive, Fight Back, and look for opportunities to score on the Netherlands. When the chance game at the 90th minute for the ENG Sub, he put it in the net, then everything became clear. England could Win.
Lets see if they can beat Spain, and in soccer anybody can beat anybody any day.

Sometimes you focus too much on the wrong things to build a team, then you end up with something that looks like a team but it's not.
How do we tell the difference?
The Results.
If a coach tells me he did a great job or the best possible job building a national team, I will have to reserve judgment until I see the final product. We apply the same standard to everything and we always figure it out correctly.
If the final product, be it a Cellphone or a Soccer Team or a Sandiwich, is good i.e. we observe and judge, then yes Gregg Berhalter or the Deli-man or the engineer created a good product.
But if the team loses 5-1 in America to Columbia in a friendly, then the 3rd game loses to Panama 2-1 (end game a fluke) then the 4th game loses to Uruguay 1-0, all on home soil in America, then there is something wrong with that product. It may not be the Coach but the Coach is the HEAD of the Team. That's why we hire coaches to tell the players what to do and how to do it.
If the players refuse to do what the coach told them, that's why we give the coach the authority to select the players.
So in this example either Mr Gregg Berhalter selected bad players, or good players don't don't listen to me, or he doesn't know what he's doing.
We need a logical explanation to the 5-1 and the other 2 loses here at home, otherwise there no meaning to talking and analyzing.
Let's see if the new coach will do better than Berhalter.
Sometimes the coach or players need to be changed.
The Coach changes players.
The Federation changes coaches
etc..
Lets hope that the change will give us a better team or a better product.

you absolutely ripped into the American coaches, but it is well deserved. too many are ok with doing the absolute bare minimum and think they're owed the national team job or should be looked at eye to eye with their European counterparts. far too few have actually gone out and done the work. Go abroad, test themselves and gain experience. they need to do better
They need to bring knowledge from overseas to run things on the admin side. The whole world has been playing this sport at a higher level and longer than we have. Why we’re trying to recreate the wheel is beyond me. Bringing in experts like that would’ve never allowed Berhalter in in the first place. More importantly, they’d find the right man for the job.

So many good points. I think all your main questions can be answered with two words ignorance and incompetence. USSF leadership is ignorant and incompetent. They don’t know what they don’t know and they have no interest in learning more. The priority is always on profit instead of the romance of growing the game. Growth to them is making more money not actually becoming more competitive. The team played with no COMMITMENT, watch the South American teams they play with intent and aggression and know they will be portrayed as villains if they fail. The players here know that they will be protected by everyone if any fan insults them on social media and can play themselves as a victim. Not the case in other countries except England which probably explains the reason why they never win either.

Bradley had us on some highs winning the Gold Cup final against Mexico for the first time in 2007, taking down all-conquering superpower Spain in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup in 2009 ending their 35 match unbeaten streak and winning a World Cup group that included England in 2010. We failed more often than not, to adapt our tactics to the opponent.
We succeeded in 2002 because Bruce Arena did that in 2002 against Portugal especially.
We didn't adapt our tactics against Holland in 2022.
We're learning, but we need to get more ambitious and stop defending Coaches based on whom we like in spiate of the metrics of their record.
I think 22 loses with Berhalter is a bad record.
If we lose 3 games per year, in 5.5 years that's only 17 games.
I believe we can have a record of losing no more than 1 or 2 games per year.
That will set a standard for the players so they know they're on a USMNT that REFUSE TO LOSE. To steal a page from the Italians or the Germans.
We have to aim higher, Quarter Final in the World Cup at least, or the Semifinal.
In 2022 under Berhalter we defeated Morocco 3-0 in a Friendly, the same National Team that went on and reached the Semi Final in the World Cup, playing all 7 games.
That's the kind of Ambition, and a Realistic Ambition, we must have.
