Of course he does. Media, USSF and MLS are opportunities for these guys after their playing careers. Berhalter did the absolute bare minimum for 2022. His qualifying performance was pathetic. Dude beat the worst Mexican team of our lifetime a few times. That's it. His era was a failure.

He's the only non-delusional US analyst here. Herc is an idiot who is way too opinionated for such a mediocre player and Seb is a biased shill. Yes Berhalter didn't have the best run and probably should have walked himself after the Gio incident, but American soccer fans are way to delusional in thinking this is a golden generation. Donovan, Dempsey, McBride et al were way better and way more proven.

He didn't miss qualifying like Klinsmann / Arena, also didn't have us playing well like Arena in 2002 or Bradley in 2010.
If only Bradley could figure out how to not stay loyal to "his" guys like Rico Clark and Jonathan Bornstein we could've made a run. Rico Clark basically lost the Ghana game by himself, and Bornstein got him fired against Mexico.

    • @stewartrickert
      @stewartrickert 2 місяці тому +14

Its pretty easy to understand. We're not as good as people like to try to pretend - and while the coach sucks -
that really doesn't change the first part. Name me one elite national team anymore than 1-2 of players play in, let alone start. Until that changes... the coach doesn't matter.
As they say in Coaching it ain't the X's and O's its the Jimmy's and Joes.
You can design the greatest tactic in the history of mankind. Of the universe.
And when their player is faster, a better dribbler, a more clinical finisher, better with his feet, etc, etc...
then it simply doesn't matter. The coach can't help at that point. If you're better than me at X activity when you and I are both at our best... then you're just better than me and the vast majority of times in a head to head matchup, you're going to win.
This delusion that a head coach changes that somehow ... is just that. A delusion. If that was the case than way more small market teams and small colleges would win national titles than do. But 8/10 times, its the team with the most talent or at least, comparable talent to the most talented team that wins. Theirs a reason we celebrate the underdog stories - cause they don't happen much.

@@leonard30909 I agree, and for me, that's not a knock on CP. But the reality is.. he's not good enough to be leading a national team. I'd say the same for Gio.
Both are very, very good. Don't get me wrong. They are both good enough to be on champion level teams.
But there is a difference between being good enough to be on the team and being good enough to be the "man" leading those teams. That's not the same conversation.
Its kind of like in baseball there is a saying there's the "Hall of Fame" and the "Hall of Very good".
CP and Reyna to me are in the latter. Their games are in the hall of good to maybe hall of very good. But not in that truly elite level you need to win a world cup or to win a Copa America, etc.

Then you have Canada filled with MLS players and look how far they got. Managers make a world of difference. This team is immature and emotional. We need an adult at the wheel and one that knows the game…and less of guys like Kasey that keep making excuses for his pal, Berhalter. I disagree with Kasey about the 'blowing up budgets' part. When the USWNT effectively had Cordeiro 'resign' due to 'bad words about the women' (in reality it was likely about the futility of the loser of a lawsuit), former women's player Parlow-Cone was APPOINTED and she had NO PROBLEM opening the coffers and not only upping women's pay despite the contract they agreed to, but just giving them MILLIONS in "back pay"!! So he can kindly f-off with the 'budget' nonsense because they had no problem breaking the budget EVEN THOUGH the lawsuit against the federation itself was DISMISSED! And now they have this BS bylaw where the women's coach, as inexperienced or average as she might be or given the level of the women's sport vs. the men's. could get the same pay as a super high profile manager demanded at the highest levels of the sport. "Equal Pay.. yays!"
Let all of that sink in. Then think about what Keller said about 'blowing up the budget'. Here is the US hosting the World Cup - the MEN's. Which - I'm sorry if it offends people - is INFINITELY BIGGER than the women's World Cup. More people care, more people watch, more prize money is involved, more sponsors demand exposure. The US may not get to host again in your lifetime. But suddenly "oh, well, you know we better mind the budget!" GTFOH... 🤣🤣😂😂

That said they never should have rehired him so this was inevitable, the USMT lacks a consistent system, and they still give the ball away a ton. The players (not all) lack the mental discipline and structure it takes to compete in world tournament football, a manager with proven experience could certainly help with that. Satisfactory: get out of groups in second place, lose in quarters to Colombia/Brazil while putting up a respectable fight
Exceeding expectations: Top the group and/or get to the semis
Pipe dream: make the finals and/or win
GGG is not an average coach. He's far below average, and this tournament might have been what actually got him fired, but it's not the reason he DESERVES to be fired. He deserves to be fired for being a terrible coach for the past 5 years whose only accomplishments really are continuously defeating the worst Mexico team in recent history in an overwhelming weak CONCACAF. We've looked terrible pretty much any time we've actually had to play a decent team outside of CONCACAF.

Keller is such a mouthpiece. Worthless commentary. “We’re not at that level so we shouldn’t push to be at that level?!”…now what

USMNT beat the golden generation of Spain with a undefeated run in the confederation cup 3-1 in 08…..and led Brazil at halftime 1-0 in the final. Point is mute.

@SPFray-ss5pu The Americans have recorded a 1-18-0 mark against the Brazilians all-time. Versus Spain 1-4, versus England 2-8-2.

Get the right coach, you will see significantly better performance. Keller just showed the federation's cards. They are way too involved in the day to day. Hire a coach and let them drive.

Greg did some good things as a head coach, but it's a result driven business and the results didn't happen. I don't blame US Soccer for moving on. Hopefully Greg finds a new gig that allows him to continue to develop as a coach, and he continues his career.
But the coach is not our primary problem and others need to be accountable as well. It's all subjective, but EA Soccer has a reasonably rigorous database of 17K+ pro soccer players. The US best two players are tied for 733rd best in the world. Spain has 69 players rated above anyone on the US team. Spain is 7X smaller than the US, but could literally field 5 full starting lineups better than anyone on our US team. That's not the head coach's vault. All of US Soccer has failed. Matt Crocker and the rest of US Soccer need to be held to account as well. If we did all the right things to fix this, it would still take more than a generation to work.
Add to that that US Soccer feels like a soap opera. All the off-field drama, all the gripes, all the dark secrets. It makes for a great episode of Below Deck, but it's awful for a profession Assocation. We need a complete reset, focused on developing young coaches and young players. Our problem isn't the head coach, it's that we need 3000 more good coaches for under 10 teams, and we need a much more merit based youth development system. Make it cheaper to play. Make it cheaper to acquire good coaching skills. Pay youth clubs for producing successful player. Relegate and promote teams from the various leagues.

We need more pundits like Seb, Ale, & Herculez discussing US Soccer. I've never fooled by the reality of US Soccer. With these gentlemen they're clearly educating the average football fan that doesn't know the harsh truth regarding our game. Thank you gents. Keller, I expected differently.

Is Keller worried about a pay decrease if USSF hires an expensive manager?

’Resetting the market’ is a lot easier to do on the women’s side, it’s much more immature market, with fewer big actors, and less money saturated. A federation’s financial means are not defined by their budget for their women’s team in this sport, in the majority of cases.
I do think USMNT should dare to go outside the US system for the men just like they did with the women though. But for that there are a lot of options. Much, much more options than in the women’s game. It can be, but doesn’t have to be one of the most expensive coaches in the world.
