Shore Fishing UK - Flounder and Bass Fishing in an Estuary | The Fish Locker

  • Shore fishing for Bass and Flounder is a British winter tradition. Finding some sheltered shore fishing in winter can really keep the love for angling alive during the dark and rainy months. Here I fish a new shore mark in an estuary targeting Flounder and Bass. I explain the rigs and baits I use and show how to unhook a deep hooked flatfish.
Here are links to some of the tackle I used in this video. I hope it helps.

In the least can you let us know about the Mark. How many miles from the mouth of the river are you. Do you find estuary fishing most productive at certain times of year or states of tide. I fish the Tyne a bit here and there and have never been able to put my finger on best strategies. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers John

Fishing the old car tomorrow, will start fishing at least once a week again as a mental health medicine, works like a charm, and I love the sound of the waves and the smell of pier.
Been studying so much, came to the conclusion that I'll only buy the rod and line and the rest I'll make handmade, and I'm so excited for it

Good technique there for unhooking flounder, they always seem to hook deep. A mate once told me bend the hook over left or right of the shank slightly to stop deep hooking, it seemed to work well. That mud though, gets everywhere.

Finally, after a hectic house move I managed to catch up with your videos. I'd been toying with some long forceps to turn the line through the gills and remove deep hooks the same way you do, but after seen you using the "hook tool" I'm going to definitely adopt the idea (hope you don't mind John :) ). It seems to be a much more friendly way to unhook deep set hooks and less stressful for the fish. Thanks for another great video and some great tips John.

Evening John, love your channel you’ve got me back into fishing after 18 years of not picking up a rod. Used to course fish when I lived in Yorkshire, now I am in the highlands so very steep learning curve on sea lochs. Loosing quite a bit of gear, it’s very snaggy . Anyhow just wanted to say thank you, and keep this first class channel going it’s one of the best on UA-cam mate. Jonny

Good on you Johnny for sticking at it. Yes mate it can be a very steep learning curve especially when you're in a spot like the highlands. I've got a video going up tomorrow from up your way. 😉

I love these estuary videos and hope in the near future to be copying your techniques for myself. Great upload, glad you went through the unhooking of flounder with a much clearer demonstration. Nicely filmed thanks for posting.

Great unhooking technique, when done carefully it's a great way of unhooking flatties. I used to see scores of palm sized flat fish dead under Bournemouth pier when spearfishing as many anglers just wiggle the hook out with a high risk of puncturing the heart in flat fish. Circle hooks can reduce the risk of a deep hook, but I find your bite to hook up ratio drops.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  2 роки тому +2

Spot on Danny. Circle hooks for flatfish just are not as effective. And I have seen so so many people deep hook flatfish and either panic and cut it off or kill the fish in an attempt to disgorge it. Hopefully this will help.

I learn something from every video you put out.
Last video I saw those "foam reels" with your tackle wound around it when you opend the tacklebox. Thought that was a gorgeous idea!
This video I couldn't help but notice how much you pay attention to your setup (always checking back at the rods.) You could see it was the fish that was important and the camera is just also there.
I also love how much patience you have with the bites. I, being an amateur, tries to set the hook every time the rod slightly vibrates. I guess I will have to change that.
Love your channel. Happy new year and may your channel *way more* than just double this year.
    God bless.

That is one of the hardest things to develop in fishing. Is how to sit on your hands when you get an “interest” bite. Learning what different bites indicate. Some are just a fish finding and exploring the bait. Others are “FISH ON”!!! That’s a difficult thing to learn. 😊👍🏻

@@TheFishLocker yeah so do I but if its deep hooked I might try to turn the hook up the gills and then take it out with forceps. Won't work in every situation but if it works on 1 fish I'd be happy. I Don't normally deep hook them anyway

We have a few similar spots around my area similar to where you're now, I'm still just trying to pick up tips, thought you'd be using a rag lug combo but the lug does the job, noticed your flounder came mainly on yellow n green beads I always get told red n black but I'll change it I'll put one on one set up and opposite on another see what happens 😉
