Lex is always just getting into the grove with a smile that can light up the world, and Brad always looks like he's trying to learn PhD level calculus. 😀
Hahahahahahaha, true! :)))
hahahahahaha
that is because Brad is coming from a long way out. No disrespect but many (def not all) black men have been lied to so much through hip hop and rap culture music and the race haters that try to portray everything in terms of race and division between black and white and any other culture. It has affected him and he is with a bright shining little light (Lex), who is so obviously trying to lead him out of all that. She is very special.
I loved when they imitated each other. Brad was silly bubbly. Odd to see but nice.
And not getting it.
I'd say the original video gives much more of the feeling "of the mindset you need to be in" with this one to get "their" meaning - a bit different than what the sound lets off... the vid helps set the frame if you will. That being said I only know this one from the video personally, so it was nice seeing the lyrics alone... thanks!
Agree, that the video for this one is, as you stated, a bit different than the what it sounds like. It was nice to just see the lyrics alone.
Yup the original video for this just suits the song so well. It still takes me back to that summer. Probably 20 yrs now
That's the problem, sometimes you need the lyrics, sometimes you need the video, sometimes you need the unedited version. Sometimes you need to just have the lyrics pulled up on another screen while trying to watch an unedited official video.
Yup. Watch the video. That completes the picture of the song.
This song might hit harder in England because of the class system... being born into a "mold" and feeling like you can't change. I always thought there was an ambivalence in England over having both a strong sense of history and sense of belonging (which is linked to "knowing your place" in society).
Americans aren't as class conscious. In fact, their whole history and culture seems to encourage social climbing.
Yay you guys are discovering indie UK stuff. You're getting Closer to Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Blur, Muse, Manic Street Preachers.
@Papa B Isn't it?

@@thgeremilrivera-thorsen9556 are Oasis country music? Lol is that what you are asking
Happy Mondays. Primal Scream etc etc
One of the greatest songs ever written. Richard Ashcroft is a genius.
He really is.
He is a genius but didn't write it it's a song from the 30s or 40s
Not a genius with sampling and copyright laws, however.
Not sure if being serious...
The rights to the song were recently released back to the band so they will finally receive some compensation after 22 years of being denied.
This song always reminds me of the movie "Cruel Intentions" (which i love!).
That movie had one of the best soundtracks of all time: it had Placebo, The Verve, Counting Crows and so on.
and, of course Sarah Michelle Gellar 🥰
90s and early 2000s movie soundtracks were the tits!
That sequence in the movie when Sarah's character finally pays for her sins was made so much better by this song. It was perfect.
Brad & Lex should movie reviews!
I love just about the entire album this is off of, Urban Hymns. The album has a lot of hypnotic wall of sound elements. Love ya'll!
Yep, it's one of the all time classic albums. Not a bad song on it.
This song was culturally MASSIVE... it is one of the very few songs ever written that can be called the song of a generation.
If this song is played in a pub in the UK everyone knows the words and sings along ;)
Good point. If someone had asked me to pick a "Song of the 90s" I'd probably say "Smells Like Teen Spirit" but this has to be right there as well.
And, maybe, even though they only came out like 6 years apart, they appealed to different generations. "Teen Spirit" was a definite Gen-X anthem, but this came out as early millennials (like myself) were becoming teenagers.
@@adamplace1414 Nirvana and smells like teen sporit wasn't the cultural hit this song was though, this song got attached to England football matches and I think also match of the day, there's nobody in thre UK especially England that doesn't know this song
I would say this whole album was a master piece
@@joethomas8342yes it was and it’s spirit
This song epitomizes the nihilistic attitude of a lot of my generation. Makes me think of a line from the Dave Matthews Band song #27, "What bittersweet road will I choose to the grave?"
@Internet Jesus Not born in the 90’s. More like came of age in the 90’s.
#27 AWESOME song 🔥🙌
As one who came of age in the 90's I can relate. Old enough to really understand what went on after the cold war, how we refused humanitarian aid to russia and other countries, how the CIA imported literally tons of coke into the US and then ruined the career of the journalist who reported it. All while realizing the wage slave aspect.
Ohhh yes..this one brings so much Nostalgia for me. Transports you back in time, to a special time or moment in your life when this song was released. ❤🔥
To a time when I wasn't an old man :-) And for me, it was a time when I was living the life in Silicon Valley during the internet boom and life and the economy were looking up almost everywhere.
The Verve asked Decca for the right to use this orchestral arrangement, it came from "The Last time" by the Stones, But Alan Klein sued, saying the Verve had used far more
of the arrangement than was agreed, In 1997 they settled out of court, and the song was attributed to Jagger/Richards, in 2017 Jagger/Richards signed over
the publishing rights back to The Verve
If only Jagger and Richards had put as good of a hit as this one in the last 25 years, Unfortunately their biggest hits they had during that time was Richards falling out of a Coconut tree and Jagger got hit by all those paternal lawsuits.
Yes, yes, yes we hitting the UK indie scene. Love that you love it Lex - one of my favourite songs of all time. Hypnotics the word - a groove, those strings and Richard's mantra. Never fails to lock me into a dad shuffle whenever and wherever it comes on!
I'm looking forward to the day Lex finds out about Tom Waits.
This is an anthem of sorts, unapologetically honest about the brevity and impermanence of life--and that even/especially when lived to the full it will contain both the bitter and the sweet. The classical music that pervades it gives it extra resonance. This is one of a relatively small group of songs for which I can name the exact time and place I first heard them. 🎼🎻💖💔
Another great song from that album is “Lucky Man”.
There is one really underappreciated song from them called "catching the butterflies", what a beautiful psychedelic trip is that song!
This song brings me back to the mid to late 90's when i was in High School. Very nostalgic.
One of my favorites. This whole album is great. Try "Lucky Man" next. Singing about pain and life makes us feel better.
Brad, you are so lucky to have wife that can chill and enjoy pretty much all types of music. Rock on Brad and Lex!
Love the Verve, seen them live year's ago in Glasgow 💜 there song Lucky man was alway's a fav of mine 💜
Never leaves my top ten album list.
Wish I'd seen them in m home city.
One day maybe my fave.
If you could see this video , you would get the full effect of this song. They are almost desensitized. The singer is so angry with life. I still love this song! It's deep.
This is one of my favorite songs and you guys are the only people ive seen react to it. Thank you for that.
Their 2 other big songs are “lucky man” and “the drugs don’t work”
I prefer Lucky Man to this one, great song.
Don’t forget Colorful another great song
And "Sonnet"

Oh you guys don't know what you 've just listen, it is a legend of the late 90's, many beers and whisky and friends and brothers that some still alive but others are gone, this song encapsulates those times for many people from my generation, thanks for your reaction, put it on repeat,...
The drugs don’t work, lucky man, sonnet and slide away are a must from these guys 👍❤️❤️
This song landed in 1997: So hard 2 believe that's 25 yrs ago. INSTANT CLASSIC 🔥🔥😍❤️👌💪
"A million people from one day to the next"....different people we deal with bring out different aspects of our personality. We don't change who we are but tap into different pieces of ourselves. All to exist.
Definitely needed to see this one with the actual video as well, just adds to it
Loving all this 90s UK content.
Keep going with the Oasis catalogue, you'll not regret it. The band was transformative for music and so many peoples lives.
Hey, why Not kulah shaker?
The orchestral, instrumental version of this song is what I used to walk down aisle at my wedding. 💒❤️
Alex is like me - I just love it when rock music incorporates string instruments. All of the way back to the Motown era, Roy Orbison, and then more famously by the Beatles and Electric Light Orchestra. U2 and Coldplay are modern masters of it. Also love it when horns and brass are infused - most brilliantly by Steely Dan, Dave Matthews Band, and now by the Revivalists. Keep up the good work, love y'all's reactions.
Listening to many reactors, I have noticed virtually no one is lostening to one of the most influential bands of early 90's : Massive Attack. "Unfinished Sympathy", "Daydreaming", "Protection". Bitter sweet music combining hip hop beats, reggae and pop.
I would really like to see reactions to bands like Massive Attack, Portishead, Morcheeba, and Lamb...maybe even Sneaker Pimps.
Brilliant reaction Lex ❤
Listen to “Sonnet” by The Verve. Beautiful song.
Such a simple yet powerful song.
This song just hits your heart ❤
Another great tune that really utilizes sound scapes like these guys is "Sitting Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods. Very hypnotizing and a total vibe.
Lex, that riff is known as a hook. This is song writing 101. Just one good hook can make a song catchy and subconsciously command the attention of the listener. What I like about this song is how the vocal melody is riding the hook. I mentioned this before, when if come to instrumentation hooks, IMO you can't beat the song "How Soon is Now" by The Smith. The song is a masterpiece.
Iconic song. Stuck in my head forever.
You should also check out: "The Verve - Lucky Man" is a banger!
The video really sets the whole mood of this song...a real great one from the 90's...of my favorites of that time.
The video to this song brings it all together, the song “The Drugs don’t Work” written when Richard Ashcroft grandmother died, is the most beautiful, hypnotic sad song ever written, Lex u will love it
What a band!!! What a song!!! Oh my....of the bestest memories ever! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Haven't heard this in years. I love it 😀
Damn, you guys are hitting the 90s hard. Kudos.
This has been my Ringtone on my cell for Ages!! ❤️❤️❤️
Part of the fun of your channel is watching Lex experience the joy of discovering new music. You can see it on her face.
I enjoy the whole album, the band not only has great songs but has also gone on to other projects.
Other songs off the album, Urban Hymns, worth checking out: “Lucky Man” & “The Drugs Don’t Work.”
This song is pretty bittersweet in itself as they sampled the Rolling Stones whose lawyers left them with no earnings, so despite the songs fame all the cash was stolen by the Stones’ legal team.
As of 2019, NPR has an update on the story,
“After more than 20 years, the Rolling Stones and The Verve have resolved a sour dispute over the authorship of the song ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony.’ The Verve's frontman and co-founder, Richard Ashcroft, announced on Wednesday that the situation has finally been laid to rest.”
Richard Ashcroft is probably better known for his solo work at this point, but I always think about the UNKLE songs he’s been featured on. Check out “Lonely Soul” by UNKLE ft. Richard Ashcroft (singer for The Verve.)
This is a truly beautiful song.
Preach it is right Lex!
Great song from the 90's. It was featured in the movie ''Cruel Intentions''.
How havnt ye heard of these songs already l. This is one of the all time greats
Currently having a Brad and Lex rabbit hole dive. Miss you guys
should have had the video for this one ,,, its got real attitude ....... love your reactions
Really appreciate your reactions, Brad's sometimes brutal honesty and Lex's ultra sensory reactions. Hoping you would consider some songs from bands without a large catalog but still had a song or two that were really great.
Eve 6 - Inside Out - 1998
Stabbing Westward - Save Yourself - 1998
Tantric - Breakdown - 2001
Trapt - Headstrong - 2002
The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love - 2002
Thanks!
Blues Travelers- Run Around
Lex would love Stabbing Westward, definitely have to listen to Haunting Me by them if you do Save Yourself.
AKA 'One-hit wonders'. Lots of those in the 80s and 90s. I'll second that!
Savatage: Sirens. It's short and sweet. I used play it loud when I used to play COD 😂
I love this song so much
The Verve had some amazing songs in their day. 'Lucky Man' & 'The drugs don't work' come to mind. Richard Ashcroft went solo afterwards and recorded one of my favourite songs of all time 'New York'.
Beautiful song
Classic! Well worth watching the video
I believe that yes, that is accurately a "riff" that the violin is playing, though I imagine that's not the _preferred_ word by classically trained musicians.
I believe it's a "refrain" if we're being classy about it.
So I love you guys so much. Been listening to so many of your reactions now and you are spot on most of the time.
Lex , I just love the way you see music. Your descriptions are brilliant and intuitive.
Brad, I have to say, you play the dead pan and enqisitor so well.
Here is the observation that will probably make you laugh. I hope so.
Watch the keyboard player from the 80's band Sparks. He is as emotionally invested as you my friend 😁
Hope you enjoy. It is absolutely worth checking it out.
Stay safe my friends and please keep going x
An absolute classic British track from a great British band.
Road of life is bitter sweet. Change as we might you never lose what you started with, your mold.
The 'riff' you are referring to cost them the song rights. They sampled a orchestral arrangement of the Rolling Stone's 'The Last Time'. The company that owned the rights sued and won all proceeds to the songs. 20 years later, the Stones gave back the rights to the Verve.
this was an awesome classic.
This is such a great song.
The official vid is very illustrative and well worth a watch.
Another song that feels similar to me is "Standing outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods, from just one year earlier (1996), except the repeating sample is from BB King.
Thats a good song.
Me and my friends grew up listening to this Album, Urban hymns. Late 90s UK 🇬🇧
Love the longer intro makes song better. Cannot hear this song and not see Cruel Intentions movie in my head....that's where I first heard this song and been hooked ever since 💗🕊️
That's a surprisingly good soundtrack. Another great song from it is "This Love" by Craig Armstrong featuring Elizabeth Fraser on vocals.
The official music video for this song is a must.
Followed by Fat Les, Vindaloo
This Song NEED to be viewed hearing the Song!
Yessssss. Even my Pops and mom’s love this song. I know Madd HipHop heads that love this song and metal heads. The song is great!
the "1000 rocking" version is awesome!!!
This song is classic, one of the best of the nineties 💕💕💕👍👍👍👍
You guys may take a liking to "Depeche Mode." "Enjoy the Silence" is a great song.
I remember sitting in the car with mates, peaking the hell out to this song in the 90’s!
This song has an iconic video. Definitely recommend you take a look.
You need to see the music video for this beauty!
Subconsciously bobbing heads lol gotta love good music
There’s an unbelievable version of Life’s an Ocean by them from Later with Jools Holland.
Thanks Lex...for the enthusiastic breakdown....and Brad is like...."Duh??'
x
This song can give more than one message
This whole thing including the video is an homage to Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack.
Favorite song of all time
I love how Lex enjoys music :)
You guys are great!…you compliment each other very well…like peanut butter and jelly.
A brilliant song from a brilliant album (Urban Hyms) released in 1997. Takes me back to happier times when I was in my late 20s and the world was a much better place.
The symphonic sound/sample to Bitter Sweet Symphony was taken from an orchestral arrangement recorded in 1965 by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra and their version of a Rolling Stone song called "The Last Time." The Verve were sued and lost because they took more than what was agreed upon from the sample. The Verve lost all of their royalties to the song in 1997; however, in 2019, the band worked out an agreement with the publishers while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) released their songwriting credits to the song back to The Verve/Richard Ashcroft.
The Dear Hunter albums "Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise" & "Act V: Singin Hymns with the Devil in Confessional" were both recorded with a full orchestra in addition to the typical instruments of the band. I think it would hit that combo spot that Lex enjoys.
the symphony was a sample of a sample originally recorded by the rolling Stones ... this song sold millions and they never got a penny until a couple of years ago ... check out This is Music ,Drugs don't work ,Lucky man .. great band and Richarx Ashcroft solo stuff is pretty solid too
I'll never forget this song. In 2001 my Dad and myself were at the race at Daytona on February 18th. We would have my mom record the race so we could watch it again later. Daytona is 2.44 miles in a TRI Oval. There was 226.000 people at that race that Sunday. That was the race that Dale Earnhardt died hitting the wall in turn 4. When we watched it at home the opening song that the network played was The Verve bittersweet symphony. And talking about prophetic. The whole race was bittersweet. Dale died while blocking other competitors from potentially winning so his car that he co owned with his wife could win its first race driven by Michael Waltrip and his son Dale Jr. Could come in 2nd.
Now how's that for bittersweet. Listening to this with you guy's brought back all those emotions of that day. My Dad and I went to Daytona for 10 years straight. We never went back after that Race. 🌴🌄🐊
Sonnet and Drugs don't work were two of the other really popular tracks of this album.
Yea!
Richard ashcroft is a legend, brilliant voice, from my home town as well in wigan in the uk
The verve Lucky Man , greetings from mexico
One of the best bands live didn't know at the time but went to see them at Slane Castle here in Ireland 1998 and that was their last concert ever,,,,
Sonnet is a brilliant song by the Verve Richard Ashcroft is an amazing songwriter, Also Lucky Man is another amazingly written song.
As a English man, this is our like football anthem along with 3 lions on our shirt, a classic
