Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a 2018 American computer-animated superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales / Spider-Man, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel Entertainment. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is the first animated film in the Spider-Man franchise.[4][5] Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman (in Persichetti and Rothman's feature directorial debuts) from a screenplay by Phil Lord and Rothman from a story by Lord, it stars Shameik Moore as Morales, alongside the voices of Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Vélez, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, and Liev Schreiber. The film's story follows Miles Morales as he becomes the new Spider-Man and joins other Spider-People from various parallel universes to save his universe from Kingpin.
Plans for an animated Spider-Man film by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were leaked in 2014 and announced in April 2015. Persichetti, Ramsey and Rothman joined over the next two years, with Moore and Schreiber cast in April 2017. Lord and Miller wanted the film to have a unique style, combining computer animation with traditional hand-drawn comic book techniques inspired by the work of Miles Morales co-creator Sara Pichelli. The film required up to 140 animators, the largest crew used by Sony Pictures Animation on a feature film.[6] The film is dedicated to the memories of the creators of Spider-Man, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who both died in 2018.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse premiered at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on December 1, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on December 14, in 2D, 3D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX formats. The film grossed $384.3 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. It received widespread praise from critics for its animation, characters, story, voice acting, and humor. The film won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards-being the first non-Disney/Pixar film to win the award since Rango (2011) and was similarly successful at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, the 72nd British Academy Film Awards, and the 46th Annie Awards. Two sequels, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, are set to be released in June 2023 and March 2024, respectively. A spin-off film is also in development, with a television series being considered.[7]

You hit the nail on the head with this analysis so well that I don't know if I have a lot to add. The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is that like Spiderverse, Sony's/Lord's & Miller's other great recent animated masterpiece 'The Mitchells vs. the Machines' also has an extended cut that consists of some finished animation, some in-progress animation, and some storyboards. (Though I would personally say that aside from a few jokes that I can imagine were painful to leave out, the final cut of 'Mitchells' is definitely better than the extended/original cut.)

Into the Spider-Verse is still my favorite movie of all time, so the fact that we're getting a sequel in less than a month is beyond exciting for me. However that also worries me a lot about it, because they've shared some iffy plot details which CAN be executed correctly, I think, but rarely ever are. I get the idea since Gwen and Hobie are both musicians and hobie seems to be framed as the super cool Spider-Man but I think the dynamic would work best if the focus is less on miles and hobie fighting for Gwen’s attention and more on miles feeling insecure around hobie in general. Miles morales comics had its problems but it’s what got me into Marvel and Spider-Man in general so his original run will always have a special place in my heart. I love the original comic Miles but i do think the ITSV version is the best version
my only issue with it is that it’s a multiverse story. I would’ve preferred seeing Miles become Spidey on his own and learn things on his own. He didn’t need a spider mentor or spider friends to guide him, that’s one thing i say the comics did better, they let Miles fail and learn on his own which pretty much every spider person does. I do like Into The Spider-Verse, but it’s not my favorite because of my personal biases. I also have some legit criticisms for this movie. Unlike the Spider-Man fanbase whose bias level makes them gatekeepers that thrive off of hating, I am not super biased when critiquing Spider-Man. I still have biases though, and one of them is Peter Parker being the definitive Spider-Man in my eyes. Because the Spider-Verse movies are mainly about Miles Morales and not Peter Parker, those films will never be my favorites no matter how good they are. My biases toward Peter Parker will always make me enjoy Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Spider-Man 1, and the Home trilogy more than the Spider-Verse films and Insomniac Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Miles Morales is A Spider-Man; Gwen Stacy is A Spider-Man; Peter Parker (Noir) is A Spider-Man; Miguel O’Hara is A Spider-Man; but Peter Parker is THE Spider-Man.
As for legit criticisms, Into The Spider-Verse can be unhinged at times, especially with the action and visuals. The climactic battle for example had visuals so trippy that all I could see was colors vomiting everywhere. On the other hand, I consider the illusion scene in Far From Home to be a true, visual masterpiece for reasons like how the trippy visuals engages me rather than distracts me. I also do think the multiverse in the Spider-Verse films is handled in a way that’s sort of not my cup of tea. It’s certainly a lot better than movies like Morbius, Doctor Strange 2, and Ant-Man 3, but I still have some major issues with it. One is again the unhinged aspect, especially with the action, and the second is how the multiverse characters are written into these movies. Peter Porker, Penny Parker, and Peter Parker (Noir) were just side characters that didn’t really impact the story at all. They could’ve been excluded from the movie, and it would’ve turned out the same. As for Across The Spider-Verse, I know for a fact that the huge crowd of Spider-Men will just be background extras/cameos (Insomniac Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man won’t play a major role in this movie), and the main conflict will center around Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara. The spider-verse in general just feels like fan-service and not much more; almost like a gimmick to these movies. No Way Home is the only movie so far that executes the multiverse concept really well. It’s near perfection because most of the multiverse characters either get a good amount of screen-time or deeply impact the story (Tobey and Andrew are meaningful fan-service for Tom’s character development). Also, the fact that these multiverse characters are from previous Spider-Man films, instead of just brand new characters, makes the multiverse theme feel much more grand. The Flash will probably be the second movie that executes the multiverse idea really well because of Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck being in this movie.

Miles Morales is my second favorite spiderman. During 2017-2021 whenever people would debate me on why I didn't like the homecoming trilogy(before nwh) I would use Miles's to help my argument on what made the homecoming trilogy terrible to me at the time when I was 17-21. I would use Miles because it annoyed me how much the mcu fans babied Tom's Spiderman abd talked about Andrew's and tobey peter magically being more adult than tom when that wasnt the case at all. All three live action Peter's started as minor and were minors in their movies and just because Tom's spidey didn't have common sense doesn't dispute that fact. So I threw miles in there and I had so much fun seeing how the person I debated lost it because they were forcing to me like something I didn't like and couldn't accept that. At that time I didn't like the homecoming trilogy but it wasn't because I didn't want too and I had a hard time relating to this spiderman
