Love that there is no music! Just the sound of the engines and tires.
First mod should always be dif locks. Otherwise, it's not even a 4 wheel drive.
i can picture a meme of oprah "you need a locker, and you need a locker ,and you need a locker. lockers for everybody!
They need selectable lockers to be exact, which is expensive. Snow and ice terrain with a locker is dangerous (mainly on the roads and off the trails). Safety is the main reason we have open diffs and LSD's from the factory. You could easily lose all traction and 360 right off the side of a mountain even at slow speeds. I almost did that once in Big Bear coming around a curve very slowly even. It's a good thing there wasn't an oncoming car and I had an LSD. If I would have had a locker I have no doubt I would have went down the side of the hill off the side of the road into the housing community below. Lockers are great for off road, but they are a hazard in slick conditions. I've done 360's just on wet roads without puddles 2 or 3 times down here in Florida. The first time I deserved it for hitting the gas like I did shooting out into the highway. The next two times were uncalled for and I went into a curb on the side of the road breaking some teeth off in the steering box. I'm tossing the Detroit and either getting an LSD or a selectable so I can have an LSD in the rear. This is also my daily driver and I'm not spending 25K+ to get a truck with a trailer to tow a jeep on highways because it might rain. I'd rather use that to beef up my tank!
Yeah but that white thing needed tracks or something.
@@waynesanders1406 I daily drive and have an LSD in the rear I like it
@@waynesanders1406 having a locker isn't worse in the snow or on ice, it's better. Ice on roads or trails isn't even obviously so if there is a spot that's been melted through and you could get traction if it lands on a tire that has no drive than it's wasted. I've had no problems at all on ice or snow or anything with a locked diff in fact it makes it considerably easier.
Either way that lifted white xj is clearly broken or something cause the two tires spinning the most were on one side so he struggled so hard.
All jeeps 41-06 Are great.
I see lockers in a few of their futures. I'm only on 32s and I have lockers. makes a world of a difference
Thanks again Matt for this excellent video footage. That is my white XJ on 38's. My son Zander was showing us all up around 27:26 behind the wheel. Fun Day
Derek Kagley awesome rig mate what rear bar do u have it looks great and heaps of ground clearance
One of the black TJs was mine and I bought it about two weeks prior to the ride. Lockers will be ordered very soon. But like one guys who went said, it was advertised by the event organizer as an easy ride. At the end of the day we all made it home and have fun in the mean time.
I have a tj and I will admit that xj is bad ass, can't live without my drop top tho. Awesome channel, wouldn't of got my build done without u guys.
Thanks for makin the video, thats a trip i will remember for a while. Xj's rule !
That white XJ with huge tires really needs lockers, lol
@doug st.laurent It might have the 8.25
Not to mention beefier steering.
Invested in all that stuff but never got a locker smh
Absolutely, but somehow he did get by OK
I just bought a '98 XJ since the new motor for my RX7 lacked compression. It needed some love and as I'm working on it I'm amazed how easy it is (aside from everything just being different never having owned anything American or a non-car). Thanks for sharing videos of what these things are capable of. It's really making it interesting, though the 7 might being sitting in the driveway a bit longer while I enjoy the amazing gas mileage of a Jeep. Thanks for your videos!
jinxtacy the 7 must be bad on gas....jeeps aren't know for mpgs
I actually wound up sellign my 7 a few months ago. Fun to money ratio was horrible. $30k for 10k miles in 10 years was super lame. Even though I lost my ass on the sale I'm kind of relieved of a car that I never thought I'd be rid of. Bank account is a lot happier too haha
Great example of why lockers are a game changer. Love my Rubicon!
I'm pretty sure the TJ at 2:40 that had a hard time going up the hill had open diffs and that's what was causing a lot of the headache.
Unfortunately I have open 3.73's in my JK, but I'm hoping to upgrade to some e-lockers eventually.
Wow that's some slick stuff guys. Even the TJ (which looked like he had locked difs front and back) was just spinning all four wheels at 16:00
Bold statement with the whole first part of the video being wranglers lol
Looks to me like the TJ's were keeping up just fine.
My 87 xj wagoneer "4 eyed woody" would of done and looked great in those snowy mountains, man i wish i can go out there, one day.
I love the fact that the guys in the video are as old as I am and Love Jeeps!!!
Knox open diff club lol
Real nice comment. We appreciate the support and kind words.
Greg Moser Slogan reads We will get there eventually
Greg Moser lmao
That yellow TJ is similar to mine! I love my TJ! I wanna meet y'all out at Windrock one of these days.
Lockers or not. Its pure jeep fun. I have lockrite lockers on my cherokee. Noisas hell on the road. Thankfull i have them every time im offroad.great video wish i was there.
Funny vid! As below, they should sell off some of there pretty lights and stuff and buy lockers or break out the welder.
I wish I would've went on this ride. Gotta love my club though out there getting it done!! I'll be on the next hopefully!!
I had the orange JKU at the end with the toyota with both front axles broken and the steering bound. mine is a Rubicon and I rolled it at about 10:30pm when we were leaving it handed on all fours and I kept going but man it was slick that day
Stock Cherokee handled that terrain better than all those lifted tjs
the big tire are pointless if you can't turn them! the big white xj needs lockers bad!!!
+Chase Park The "dig" is strong with that one. LOL
Jeepsterdaddy 37 that looks like an xj not a Jeepster as you profile picture
Awesome video. Love the XJ's. I finally get to lift mine at the end of the month!
that guy in the grey xj was gettin it!!!
34:59 ......he knows that hurt! He played it off pretty good though!😆
I liked the silver XJ most of all, min lift for the tires, just needs a better approach front bumper
Would be nice if your off roading videos gave info as to where these legal places to trail ride are located at. Those of us who are new to this part of the country would reallly like to know. Other then that....great videos.
check the description
Says TJ's drool, shows thumnail of CJ. - BleepinJeep
Seriously though, I miss overland trail riding. I used to do this ALL THE TIME before I moved to a free state. I miss it. Now I just rock crawl, which has changed my setup.
Great video to explain when to and when not to use lockers
Still building my jeep. Guess 4 wheel spin is better then 2. Going to put lockers in front and back
Sometimes I like to wheel when it's just super sloppy wet. Its rough on the rigs but fun
with tire chains that would've been a completely different experience lol
His axles look tiny
This video makes me wanna send Aussie locker even more money just for making me feel so good about my yj lol
CJ5's I loved them too... all I can afford at present
I'm happy I swapped my D35 for a 8.25
Those tire are so big the whole car can theoretically have buoyancy on water
The old cj7 seemed to do just fine
maybe its just the size of the tires, but that white XJ's rear axle looks like toothpicks.
rndincircles yes... and yes.
Probably a chrysler 8.25. The tubes on them are really small for what they are. Decent factory axles though
Jeezus .. do jeep daily driver owners never air down??
without lockers is it really 4 wheelin? Bald tires in mud and snow? One more item of interest, some with no spare tires? Very good photography
nice 2x4s
This video is a great opportunity for ARB and Ox to advertise for YT commercials. Instead we get Nyquil and Miller Lite.
where is this and when is the next one ? looks like fun ,
Lol dat warning in the description though
The tall white xj ain't got no locker at all? That's one of the first things I did to mine was a rear spartan lol
lifts make em look cool, lockers make em go thru !
Lockers and tires are a hell of a thing
@ 2 mins in, that xj 's axle looks small compared to those tires. Is it a Dana 35 or 44? And tire size?
Doesn’t matter if it’s an xj,tj or any kind of “j”. The great equalizer is whether or not you have open diff,”limited slip” or locker. In this slick snow the chances of you breaking an axle or diff it little to none. Might as well have a locker. Or hell just weld your diff.
Do these guys have something against lockers? Jeep owners are funny.
not everyone can afford lockers
+Buckyme if they didn't splurge on light bars and winches they could.
+Collin Gardner my thoughts exactly. most of these jeeps have thousands of dollars of aftermarket stuff and I'd say about 30% is for looks in most cases. the first 6 major things I get in order lift, wheels/tires, lockers, bumbers/body protection, roll cage, and lights. yes I know there are a bunch of other things that are sometimes needed before these that I listed. depending on what kind of wheeling the vehicle is being set up for of course, but I think lockers should definitely be one of the top 5 mods.
+Collin Gardner, there's also the option of welding the diff. I know its not the best thing to do sense the heat from welding weakens the gears. the great thing is that its a free mod that will completely change the vehicle's off road capabilites for the better. I've never had a problem with a welded diff untell I started running with a tire bigger than 35in.
damn soo many open diffs
Herp-a-derp-derp, something about lockers.....
Am I one of the cool kids now?
Makes a strong case front and rear lockers
All i can hear is "odoyle rules odoyle rules" everytime the xjs are up lol
Good vid half these trucks look like they need to air down
14:00 lockers would be awesome in that situation
still.... looks like yall had fun
I'm assuming that white XJ has a ford 9 rear?
unidentifiedbomb Dana 35. Surprisingly it held up and I ate the spider gears in the front Dana 30. Didn't know it until halfway home when they let go on the interstate. Ford 9 Inch and HP44 going in right now. Also doing rear coil conversion and front coil overs at the same time.
+Derek Kagley what was the purpose of the rear arms with leaf springs?
To control axle wrap, I was snapping rear u joints because the pinion was raising so high. Jeep is now on full size axles with coils in the rear. Tanis Goff
Should have titled the video "Why you need lockers for mudding"
I like my old TJ
what about JK's?....Just kidding!
looked like a good time was had by all. Thanks 35:49 a good whack in the shin :(
Duh. I should be working, but with a video title like that, you know I'm gonna watch it. Thanks for the empty wallet Matt!
That white 2 door xj needs some damn lockers.
Idk if I air down more than most, but jesus let some air out of those tires. Most those tires looked harder than hugh hefner in heaven.
that white cherokee is nice to bad it dont have any lockers
just wondering after seeing the wide tires, how much air pressure is too low, and wouldn't narrow tires do better
if your tire is rolling in the rim.... its too low....
1psi is about as low as you want to go without blowing a bead. Especially if you buy bead locks then you can go pretty much as low as you want
+Cody Worden they're just going through mud and snow, not rock crawling. They don't need to air down that much.
+Cody Worden I think you mean 10?
+ThomasXp nope I meant 2 I've gone down that low before
Whats with the Lower Control arms on the rear of the White 2door XJ???
What is the purpose of the pipe tide down on the tire?
if you break an axle shaft on a C clip axle, the shaft can come out of the axle tube and take the tire with it. The pipe is to hold the axle and tire in place allowing him to limp it off the trail.
Thank you I didn't know
Wow, no lockers on that white XJ?!
so many could have benefited if they only had lockers
lockers will help but only till you brake traction then your hosed
Does that really big, white XJ have leaf springs and control arms?
It looks like it was just on one side, so I'm guessing it's a traction bar (prevents axle wrap.)
Thanks
cts12321 Leaf springs and ladder bars. Axle wrap was horrible so I added them. It's right now in the process of an axle swap/rear coil spring conversion and the ladder bars are becoming my lower links.
Thanks. Sweet XJ by the way!

why was that tj having such a hard time going up that hill?
oh wait, it was a tj... :)
no its because it had open diffs.
DRIVINGHAZARD1 I see, it had open diffs AND it was a tj... lol
As I read through the comments , I see a lot about lockers, and I tend to agree. They are cheap for how much better they make a vehicle perform off-roading. Another thing I have noticed though is not a single jeep in this video or many others like it are running boggers. Is there any particular reason why Matt? I know they arent terrific on rocks, but a this video they would have helped exponentially .
Boggers are for mud only. We have rocks and it's only muddy after a rain. Most ppl dont have 2 sets of tires.
Were you guys running no rear sway bars?
How do you get to this trail. I’m from northern KY but have a condo at lake cumberland so I’m down near this area allot in the summer and would like to try and find it. If anyone has a link to where this trail is please let me know.
why did they put the bar on the back tire of the black one? did he break a hub or somthig?
he broke a rear axle shaft. the bar keeps the wheel and shaft from coming out of the axle housing. hard to fet off the train on 3 wheels. lol
a boat load of fun
Why not run lockers 2G set
Go go CJ!
1000000 rpms later.....
3:36
4:11
9:48
12:27
17:04
27:25 ftw
some tire pressure changes would help, but lockers would help more. all this LSD tire spin is getting you nowhere.
I can't stand going out with more than a few rigs...I'm just too impatient I guess
At 13.30 those big'ole tires and tons on the white xj and no lockers... What a shame...
Okay so I recently got a WK grand cherokee and want to get into this kind of stuff, so pointers from others who do this alot, what are some major things I need traction wise?
WK is a hard starting point. Aftermarket support isn't really there. But lockers and decent tires are a great start. My ZJ on 31's with lockers front and rear will out wheel rigs on 33's and some 35's with no lockers.
Seth Thompson I noticed that there isn't too much for WK, but some of the basics were there; tires and a lift for a little more ground clearance. What my start was going to be was tires (and wheels for them, but wheels were for somewhat cosmetics) and maybe lockers. I don't want to go too big in the pretty stuff before traction and all. But first few things were tires, possibly lockers, and then body protection and recovery equipment.
How many of these are manual vs automatics?
in the white 2 door xj
what is that whinning noise excatly?
Power steering pump.
what was that stick attached to the rear driver wheel for ?
To keep the broken axle shaft from sliding out. Pretty common technique to limp back off the trail.
I LOVE THE JEEP CJ7
This is why I'm saving 1g for electronic lockers
Is this royal blue?
So to the question of "Do I need a locker" yes you need a locker
A 4WD without lockers is only 2WD when you need 4WD the most.
In fact it ought to be a sign in requirement to have lockers on both ends. The day would be half as long.
