This alone rang a lot of alarm bells. Add to that no new elite specs or anything to compensate for it, no voice acting for a few episodes due to covid (which wasn't anet's fault ofc, but added to the feeling of IBS just being underwhelming), strike missions meaning raids were being discontinued, which was a huge blow to the already small raiding community, the masteries were poorly designed, lots of long gaps between episodes and the last episode being known as one of the worst pieces of content they've ever delivered with just horrible storytelling. Yes GW1 Broke the rules with the Hero/Henchmen system, but Hero's are probably the number 1 reason GW1 still has a pretty healthy population to this day. Especially this time of year when so many players return for the Holiday Festivals. Drop into LA on Halloween, and GL trying to get on the first 10 servers. Its still a great game for casual players. I still play at least once a week with a small group of friends some of who have played since launch.
I played Guild Wars 1, it was an incredible PvP experience. Hall of Heroes and GvG were superbly designed. When they created GW2 their reflection of GW1 was reliance on the trinity concept being too restrictive for entry. all the game footage you see at the beginning of this video with cartoon like graphics were from an early prototype of the game that was never publicly available. The actual game art for Guild Wars 1 much more polished and fantasy art style, it looks very similar to Guild Wars 2 as they had the same art director and team on both. First gameplay footage of actual graphics for Guild Wars 1 can be seen at @1:40 . Another important point, Guild Wars 1 was NEVER marketed as an MMORPG. The team behind it were on the Diablo team at Blizzard and they were aiming to make a on-line RPG game that could be played solo, designed to have a story to be progressed through solo and with end-game multiplayer content, similar to Diablo but with an more open world field and more robust play mechanics (build system). The Guild vs Guild structured PvP in Guild Wars 1 far superseded GW2. It was the best PvP experience I've had in any game. It was players who decided to claim "this is a poor MMORPG" because it didn't behave as they expected. ArenaNet should have known what god damn idiots gamers are. Guild Wars 1 was and continues to be an excellent game, built by some the brightest minds who worked on the original Diablo. Guild Wars 2, which is an MMORPG, went on to redefine what an MMORPG should be.

Good stuff, miss this game every day. Terrific mmo, I hope the mmo's to come steal from Gw2 shamelessly. Best value for money no sub, just endless hours of fun. I appreciate your coverage as the biggest negative on this game is the publisher is horrible at promoting this game. This should already be on all 3 main console's.
Some would argue that the WoW Dragonflight devs took inspiration from GW2 for their dragonriding system, which is kinda a mix of WoW's usual flying mechanic (unlimited constant velocity in the direction you point) with the Griffon (High Speed dynamic movement). While having dynamic mount movement is always a good idea and not necessarily a shameless theft- they must've been aware of it as GW2 is one of their biggest competitors besides FFXIV, especially as they were looking for new features to spice up new expansions
@@LisaSummers1988 I haven't played Wow Dragonflight so I give them the benefit of the doubt. But we all know who did it first and who still does it best hahaha
In a way GW2 accomplished it's goal - just not to it's own major success. It did redefine the genre in many ways, but stumbled around so much in terms of game direction and post-release marketing that it allowed the competition (like WoW and FF XIV) to copy much of what it innovated on along their major content updates, staying or surging ahead in popularity, while GW2 kept meandering around with concepts and experiments like Living World - rather than capitalising on it's strengths like the combat system and cooperative design, pumping out marketable Expansions with group/guild and endgame content. It's still a fantastic game and my favourite MMO by far, but by settling for being the extremely casual solo/play alone together, hop in for a bit and drop again underdog, it imo definitely wasted most of it's incredible potential. I'll always maintain that GW2 could have easily been Nr.1 in the genre, if Anet had properly committed to it (rather than funnelling it's revenue into other, ultimately cancelled, projects - leading to the massive layoffs) as well as better leadership with a proper and consistent vision for the game.
So I found you after I went onto a bit of a UA-cam spiral regarding the review that Lazy Peon made. My personal opinion about him asside I just wish that He gave the game the proper review it deserves. As mentioned below Anet is very bad at marketing, tbh I believe that is their superpower, so when a UA-camr in the MMO space makes such a shallow and empty review, it can really kill the influx of new players. Coming from WoW I just love this game, it was a slow romance, in the beginning it was more of an affair because I was mad at WoW and then as I gave the game time it truly became my home. So I want to see this game succeed, now this game has issues and there are points regarding the SotO expansion that could have been more polished. However, like Mukuluk said 'His constant reference to GW3' was so underhanded and his comment about novelties, honestly makes the game come across as just a cheap Korean MMO. So with my rant out of the way, thank you for making content that really gives the game a fair shot. Looking forward to supporting the channel and seeing it grow.
