I graduated Warant Officer Flight School in 1979 and went straight into a Cobra transition. Though the S models were in service, they were still using G models for transition training at Ft. Rucker and that is one sleek machine! Coming right out of flying UH-1's everyday, the jump to the Cobra was profound. Mainly when negotiating the traffic pattern because the Cobra flies faster and needs to turn earlier. The Cobra is also more difficult to master in non-standard maneuvers whereas the Huey is extremely well-behaved in all flight modes.

Hi Randall - I was in Orange Flight, 79-29. My experience was very similar to your description and followed by a tour with 501st ABC in West Germany. Flew G thru F models.

The armor museum at Fort Knox used to have one when I was doing OSUT there. They're quite impressive in person.

The s and j were always my favorites. But I really like the design of the j, the sea cobra!

The Bell UH-1 looks much bether and cooler than the UH-60...the UH-60 looks like a hunchback..

Yes it is a machine capable of more, but not always better..I hear ya! Many Hueys have retired US service to support many other countries, and the platform has been modernized to be the equivilant of the Blackhawk.such as the UH-1Y Venom...the AH-1Z Viper is likewise amazing..the Bell Helicopter "siblings" are still flying together!!
