Not at that time rigid rotors weren't a thing yet (the AH-56 Cheyenne was the first attack helicopter with a rigid rotor) you either had a teetering 2 blade head or 3-5 blade head with fully articulated flap hinges which had more lift but also more control lag and spongier control which is a big no-no in a helicopter gunship. In the case of the AH-1 they replaced the UH-1's rotor stabilizer bar with a 3 axis rate gyro system that would automatically apply corrections to the cyclic and tail rotor and cancel out any uncommanded movement to the helicopter (the pilot control inputs were fed into the system in order to tell the gyros what movements to ignore). If this sounds a lot like the stabilization system on a multirotor drone that's because it basically is the same thing but 45 years earlier and with electromechanical gyros instead of electronic angle rate sensors. The latest in the AH-1 family the AH-1Z Viper actually does have a 4 blade rigid head btw The more blades you add the more lift you get but also the less efficient the rotor system is and 4 blades was considered the best trade off.
It's impossible to fly a Cobra gunship. It doesn't exist. The AH 1 isn't a gunship. It's a dedicated attack helicopter. A UH 1 Huey with offensive armament, or an Mi 24 Hind are gunships, because they can also carry troops or other cargo. Same as the AH 64 Apache. Also not a gunship, in case you were wondering. Methinks those with not enough knowledge of or background in military aviation use the word "Gunship" simply because it sounds cool !
Gunships are fixed wing aircraft modified for that role like the spectre. Attack Helicopters are just that though in modern usage Helicopter gunship is used by the wider public who otherwise do not understand the military designations.

I flew the Cobra in Vietnam in the Marine Corps' first Cobra squadron VMO-2 and then in HML-367 69-70

Hard to believe it was designed in the early 60’s, a lot of copycats have based there attack helicopters after this bird.
Most are based on a bird that saw combat in a very unpopular war, but one that either introduced new weapons and equipment or refined em.
