- When the XYL very sternly expressed to me that I was NOT to install any ham radio in "our" vehicle, I had to figure out a way to do it ANYWAY! So I made a plan , had all the needed things gathered, and waited for the opportunity. 🙃

Years ago, I remote / flush mounted the head unit, of my Yaesu FT-8800, in the ceiling's Accessory control box, of my Chevy pickup truck. I also extended the mic. wiring, to come out at the floor console box. (RJ-45 wire ?) Then mounted the brain unit, under the rear bench seat. And used a small external speaker mounted behind the floor console, at the dash. And ran 10 gauge, power wire to the battery.
It took a lot of time, planning, and installation. But, when it was done. A person couldn't see anything Ham Radio, when they looked inside the truck. The only visible idea of a radio was the mag mounted antenna. Which would be placed inside, when I wanted it hidden.
I cried a little, when I sold that truck, and had to remove it all! 😢
There’s such a satisfaction factor to a installation like that!

Yep was told I cannot mount anything in our Excursion. So will definitely be using the same technique.

I have the same radio and I mounted on top of the coffee cup holder between the seats of my car. I placed a lip-mount base for the antenna on the trunk. No holes needed and power is coming from the cigarette lighter which is plenty amps for 50 W only radio. Very easy to move from one car to another if needed. Thanks for sharing. 73
Nice install. I originally had a lip mount that I was going to put on the side of the hatch as I done with my older model Tahoe I used to have, but I remembered I had bought the mag mount years ago from a liquidation store for like $12 lol and dug it out, it has felt and rubber on the bottom so it won’t scratch, so I just used that. 3- tips I use in my existing install,
A-If the txcvr moves around, put the hard side of good Velcro on the bottom and press hard. It will slide less on the carpet. Or use the industrial Velcro (hard plastic kind) which has adhesive that sticks to carpet if it still slides or you have a work truck without carpet.
B-I route my coax down the “B Post” so much less cable to run and coil up the slack under the seat.
C-No XYL (this is not as stealth) but for better visibility I put the head right on the instrument cluster in the corner. It only covers up a section of useless info. Some Scotch VHB 2side tape on bottom holds it even in FL heat.
But YMMV.
Nice tips , I agree! I should have also pointed out that I flipped the radio upside down so the heat sink fins pointed up and unobstructed, also added a external speaker that wasn’t shown👍

She is always a awesome supporter of my hobby, it just don’t interest her and that’s fair.
My car dealer told me they had instructions from GM not to do any work on a vehicle with HAM radio installed. I had to remove the radio and all wiring (basically put it back to factory state) before they would look at it. So, my radio ICOM 5100A is now in Tac-Comm case, with the control head, speaker and mic mounted on a panel that is on a cup holder insert . Yes extension cables. I power it with a Dakota Lithium 23 amp hour battery. I just periodically recharge the battery. Oh, almost for got, mag mounnt antenna. Takes only a couple minutes to remove or put back in,

I have my own truck, but it’s a very low mile antique so I don’t drive it far or often. This vehicle in the video is what we use for vacations and such, we both have separate vehicles for work. So this one is kinda like joint custody. 🙄

or just install it under your autoradio if it fits a DIN format, and get a more compact antenna. like, any FM antenna even the integrated one WILL get you a broad part of the VHF even the UHF 446/466 parts.
Hell you could even hack something with the car audio/head unit to have a PTT button on your steering wheel, like one you never used and will never use, and leave a mic in there. I should try that with my President CB, will post pics.
Yeah there is no Din space in this vehicle, but my older model Tahoe did, so I know what your talking about. I definitely could put a quarter wave antenna on it to lessen the foot print. If the mic was a RJ45 connector it would be easy to install a panel mounted RJ45 socket. I like the steering wheel button idea too. 😎
I am looking at the WP-9900 20 watt dualbander , with the screen on the mic, and a very small transmitter.. I call it the rental car solution.. I need to build some of those pigtails….
20watt is plenty most times, sounds like a great option.

Wife did not want any radios in the SUV or Van, so I told her when she helps pay for the car bills, repairs and insurance I'll take her consideration then...so I have radios and even drilled a hole in the roof of our newer ride.

We bought this one for her a while back, she has always kept up with the payment and such, also can work magic with numbers when needed and I never won no math awards lol. That tactic would not work for me, but kudos Bugg! 💪
@K5YVY absolutely, when it comes to the house I have less control, I can't raise any more antennas so I have to improvise when I'm in my garage with an end fed on a vertical fishing pole that gets put away...she still hates it...but it's not permanent like your truck setup.
Nothing wrong with a compromise when you still get to enjoy something! 💯

I told my wife 20 years ago, if we get Ham radio, we can cancel the cell phones, and we can save $80 a month. ( at that time for two cell phone ) , she got her license, no objection as long as she can save $80 a month, $900 a year. $9000 10 years, that is a lot. AG6JU

OK, the mag mount with an adapter is a little ghetto, but I get it. The price was right and it will work just fine. Where I turned the video off was when you plugged your 50 watt radio into a cigarette lighter...Really ? It may work for you on your truck, but it will 100% blow fuses or burn up the wiring in another vehicle. Don't do this kids. Run #10, fused wire from the battery to an Anderson Power Pole connector and hide it under the seat if you don't want it seen. That way you know for sure your radio is getting all the amperage needed and you are not going to damage anything. I'd rat you out to your wife but I follow the BRO Code, so you're safe.....lol. OK, I watched the end of the video, you gave the warning. P.S. Your wife will 100% notice the antenna....you're busted the first time she looks at the truck. Always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission....
Well John…Thank you and your not wrong, if you would have not stopped watching you would have seen and heard me go over the specs of my radio amp draw, the amp rating of my 12v accessory socket, and not to do that unless you check and confirm both. The yeasu radio in the video draws 8.5amps at 50w and the power point is 20a rated. ✅
