- In one of the most absurd & historic ways possible, the San Francisco 49ers bested the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFC Championship and are headed to Super Bowl LVIII vs Kansas City Chiefs. And despite some of SF’s struggles seen in the 2024 NFL Playoffs up to this point, Kyle Shanahan, Brock Purdy & company have taken down every challenge in front of them. But when you actually take a little bit of a dive into how the San Francisco 49ers got to this point, it is not in the way most of us expected.
Let’s start with the 49ers offense. This side of the ball for SF has been a rollercoaster in these playoffs. When comparing the 1st to 2nd half in either game vs Detroit Lions or vs Green Bay Packers, the adjustments made at halftime have been astounding. Whether it’s focusing on the involvement of Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, unique route combinations to get Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Jauan Jennings or even CMC going in the passing game, or innovating to get Brock Purdy involved in new ways, Kyle Shanahan deserves his flowers for the adjustments seen.
Then in terms of the 49ers defense, the same can be said. Despite issues noticed early in both games, the likes of Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Chase Young, Javon Hargrave, Dre Greenlaw, Fred Warner, Charvarius Ward, Tashaun Gipson, etc. have made the big plays when needed most. And if 49ers DC Steve Wilks can keep that energy going, the offense should be able to continue it’s wrath on the road to Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.

Seahawks Fan chiming as the 49ers destroyed us the first game of season and we did better the 2nd game. The ability of the team to come back in the playoffs is a big key. The one year we won it we did that in a few games we were losing and had no business winning but we did. Same for the 49ers. I’m gonna say 49ers 27 Chiefs 24.

As a Niner fan for 40 years, I think this was the first game I've ever watched that I had complete confidence they could win this game being down by 17 at the half.

I really don't blame Dan Campbell for going for it on 4&2 and 4&3 ...they were able to convert on downs like that throughout the season so dan believed offense could pull it off but twice they couldn't. They let my niners team score 27 unanswered points. It wasnt because Dan didn't do field goals. 😂. I really do like Dan Campbell and the Lions. Such a great team who REALLY needs a Superbowl like no other. They were so close this year. Dam,golf and company made lions history this year! I have pure respect for the lions ❤❤
I thought I was the only one. Confidence yes, but I also knew that we had to score right out of halftime and quick. When we scored I said that's a nice punch in the mouth, now we need stops. The Lions definitely helped us out, but we deserve more credit than we've been getting. Especially from the ESPN analysts and sports writers everywhere. Now we need to complete the mission

Casuals didn’t know Brock can scoot. Look at his combine scores. His 10 yard split was 95. His acceleration is elite. His 10 yard split was 1.55. Same as CMC. Lamar Jackson was 1.54.

Nah despite people saying there’s a script, Purdy breaking outta that sack and STILL making a first down was something I never expected. Dude seemed possessed in the 2nd half. The niners D is great but damn, when their offense is clicking, it’s something I’ve never seen before
Actually, Purdy showed that he could scramble last season against the bucs. He did beautiful swim move to avoid a sack and then threw a nice pass to Deebo. And then he avoided another sack and ran for like a 10 yd td.
Not only that, literally week 1 of this season, he juked and split 2 Steelers defenders and picked up the 1st on a long run

The growth from Kyle as a coach was evident in this Lions game. Down 24-7 in the second half he didn't just abandon the run game like he has done in the past. They rushed for over 150 yards on the #1 run defense which was really impressive. The Chiefs game will come down to the trenches.
I agree if we can win in the trenches it will come down to whose defense does better because I believe both offense will show out.
First time in a long time that I’m more confident when the offense is on the field than the defense. defense HAS to show up, I expect Andy Reid to throw a few jet sweeps in & a lot of play action knowing how horrible 9ers run defense has been.
@@_JayPyrotechnics I agree, the offense has to shield the defense in many ways. Chiefs are softer against the run, hoping they can dominate time of possession to keep Mahomes off the field.

I hope we control the game by running the ball. The longer the offense is on the feed the more the defense will tire and give up more yards. We need to see a rotation of CMC and Mitchell. Mitchell is a starting rb on most other teams and unfortunately for him that we have the machine named CMC.

I'm glad I finally found someone who doesnt just say the Lions choked. The niners figured it out in the second half though and were playing much better on every level. I would like to point out though that the 0-30 in games down 7 at the start of the 4th is a bit misleading considering 19 of the 30 were in 3 years when the niners weren't competing due to rebuilds or injury laden seasons. The remaining 11 games spread over 4 seasons tells you more about what this team can do when they are operating properly.
2 years in, 2 NFC Championships appearances 1-1 and one Superbowl appearance and he is the most scrutinized QB…
@MaupnThrow5 Yeah technically he's 1-1 but because he HARDLY played in that last NFC Championship after getting injured early I'm fine in prognosticating we had a good chance of winning that game if he played the whole game.

as a niners fan of over 40yrs, both these playoff games had my stress levels on high alert early in each game. why? this system with these players should have been 60 minutes of domination from both sides of the ball. but, it wasn't until after the lions game did i notice...Shanahan might have used the packers and the lions as "test subjects" in preparations for either KC or the Ravens D-lines and he just didn't tell the players. it would be next level 3-D chess genius or i'm just dreaming it up. but, it did teach both lines more about themselves and how they need to face adversity better. it did teach them that they do have it in them to overcome the darkest of holes and still win.
either way, dream or reality, KC is in for a fight...a 60 minute slug fest, and i can't wait

I don't think it was an intentional thing at all, but Brock being willing to pull the ball down and scramble, and by doing so, showing that he can be a game changer, should shut the whole "he's only a game manager" bullshit down. He definitely showed that he can take over a game if he needs to.
Note: People keep saying, Brock got lucky on B.A. pass. There was a flag thrown for pass interference on that play. We would of had it on the fifteen but, B.A. made an awesome catch.

The stat fact that i like the most is that so far we are the best in the red zone which in 22 was a major goal even though we had the best defense. This is exciting to see and very clean! Thanks.
Brock is a special combination of abilities at the QB spot. He's very similar to Steve Young. The difference is that he didn't get to sit behind a legend to watch how it's done.
His legs doesn't surprise me. Go look at his 10 yard dash. He's step for step with CMC in the 10 yard dash. He put that on display in the Combine.

I am not surprised by Jauan Jennings's catch. We call him 3rd and Jauan for a reason. He consistently makes huge plays off just 1 or 2 targets a game, almost always at a really important moment in the game.

I have been saying the exact same thing! It’s like Kyle was trying to throw the opponent off by not doing what he knew they expected him to do. The funny thing is, it doesn’t matter if they know they’re going to run play action, they can’t stop it regardless. Brock purdy has excelled at scrambling all year but has been limited in running the ball specifically because Shannahan did not want him injured but those gametime decisions on the run were made by purdy and were instrumental in the wins

People that have been watching Brock's play since the start of even his NFL career knew he could run it like that. The only thing unique about his running in THAT game was that he had 3 big ones for first downs in the same game and that one sack avoidance was especially nifty but he has been good at avoiding sacks and creating with his legs both on runs and working out of the pocket his whole career.

He's always had the ability if you watched his time in Iowa. Shanahan probably removed the leash on him and allowed him to scramble in the 2nd half. But he's always been a guy that can scramble and isn't afraid to go in the pile to recover a fumble.
The team has a offense similar to what they had in the late 90s-early 2000's.... and they are playing like it! What was odd about this game in particular was their play style. I told my son at the half "unless they start playing like a completely different team, this game is over"... and they came out and won it!
I also told him, especially when our team is in the lead.... the game isn't over until it's over. outstanding comebacks happen and it's cool when it's your team, devastating when it's not.
I honestly didn't think the Niners would pull that win out... but the team that went into the locker room at the half... wasn't the same team that came out after the half!
I wondered "did they do that intentionally, to some degree? ...I mean, seems like they conditioned the lions into thinking 'dang. you guys read our formation perfectly! you're too good'...then, after the half, they started to really play ball. 😅" ....its silly but it was like watching a pool hustler. losing the first few matches....then, they dude gets the next break and you never play again. He sinks all the balls in one turn and you wonder "wait...what? ...?" 😂
Someone please explain how you can be surprised that Brock is able to run if you actually watch him play. He's shown running ability since he took over. He doesn't run often, but it's obvious can do it. Why are people so enamored with running, as if it automatically means you are a good QB if you can do it. Weird
They're saying that all protection will eventually breakdown so to extend the play if reads or receivers aren't open requires mobility to gain a second or two which might allow for someone to break open.

That stat is a little misleading. The Niners have made comebacks in the 4th quarter, just not when the quarter starts with us trailing by that amount. We trailed the Rams by 7 after the 2 minute warning with the season on the line and we punted AFTER the 2-minute warning we still won.
According to Steve Young he went up to Brock Purdy and calm him down and give him some advice and he just sees Brock Purdy and he's like you can taste it can't you and Brock's like yep. Steve Young was like not this early not this early and that pretty much said it all right there

I think the big bad wolf Mahomes is what's giving me pause, but in reality, this is probably the best outcome for the 49ers in terms of AFC teams we would want to face. Lamar and Allen would have been awful matchups. Niners get their shit together on both sides of the ball and win this 27 - 24

It's likely all intentional. I think the Niners just try to wear down the defensive line in the first half, while trying to keep the game close. Then switch up their schemes in the second half and EXPLODE! At that point, the defense has nothing left.
49ers need to have better defensive line packages, certain people work better together
49ers staff caught 1 of their D line goofing off on plays instead of trying to tackle & that guy may have played his last pro football game. That's 1 major hindrance to them for the moment. The guy was supposed to be a superstar but turned out to be worthless.

Look the Niners definitely played great in the second half, but they straight up would not have won if the Lions didn’t literally give that win to them. Lions kept shooting themselves in the foot over and over again until their foot was gone and couldn’t come back from the unlimited mistakes

Ill get a chance to watch the video at some point today, BUT Im pretty confident you aint gonna convince me that this was a case of "the 49ers won it" as opposed to "the Lions lost it".
24-7 at the half, Lions dominating, 49er defense looking terrible for the 2nd week in a row, 49er offense not getting it done.
*1st drive of 2nd half: Fg . Ok, 24-10.
*Lions again come down the field and on 4th and 3, Reynolds drops it. (Im not gonna even mention going for it there: Lions been doing it all year and with 49ers playing no defense til that point, going for it isnt clearly the wrong decision)
*Now 2nd possession Purdy gets the break of the game with the missed INT, bounces off his helmet, Aiyuk grabs it and the whole game just changed on that lucky play. Give Purdy some credit for the erd down TD throw from the 5 yard line, but obviously the 50 yarder was key.
*Now Gibbs fumbles- more Lions losing than 49ers winning.
*so on the 3rd 49er drive, they only have to go 25 yards-and most of that was on an unscripted Purdy run. Nice job by him, but not exactly what i would call dominating football! They were DEFINITELY dominating in confidence at that point- Lions youth at that point is a big factor in not being able to stop the momentum.
*Now the Lions come down the field AGAIN - and this time both Laporta has a drop (a hard hit, but a drop) and Reynolds drops a MUCH easier one
on 3rd down than his earlier drop ! More Lion losing it.
*4th 49er drive is a solid drive. Again Purdy goes off script for a big scramble in that drive, but a solid drive to tie it.
* On the 5th 49er drive, solid again, but 2 sacks and they settle for the FG and a 3 point lead.
*AGAIN, the Lions move the ball into long FG position, and on 4th down, Goff shortarms it as rolling right,guessing wrong which way St Brown would turn (Again, I wont even mention that Campbell went for it-going for the win rather than a long fg to tie- The 49er defense didnt show anything til that point in the game to think theyd stop the 4th down play. I do realize its at least debatable)
*49ers next drive very solid: AGAIN , a great Purdy run-this time an escape- and a long CMC run, then the Mitchell TD and its a 10 point lead.
*Again the Lions score- this time in prevent defense mode for the 49ers...and even at THAT point of the game, they got a HUGE break of the ONLY CLEAR blunder that Campbell made of calling timeout after the 3rd down run at the goal line with under a minute left!!!!!! That TO now forced the Lions to recover an onside kick. To Campbells credit , he admitted that after the game.

Did watch the video, and as expected, not seeing ANYTHING here that changes the CORRECT perfection that this was MOSTLY a Lion debacle, NOT a 49er great 2nd half to win! Just read through my drive by drive above (I did make a mistake above mistakenly giving the 49ers an extra drive) In short, the 49ers got a FG, a fluke 50 yarder that shudda been picked which was the biggest play of the game in a few ways and led to a TD, then a gift fumble , a 25 yard drive-most of that a scramble- then 2 drops from Detroit with the game tied, 49ers then got a FG for the lead(after another Purdy run), Detroit then missed another 4th down in FG range, and then there was nice Purdy run , CMC run and a TD for the 10 point lead. As you can see (if not tainted by 49er fandom 😎) its a good job by 49ers, but MOSTLY Lions giving the game away.
The only point I gained from the video was nicely pointing out that the 49ers didnt use their play action for some reason til 2nd half.
Gotta make the video more specific next time, drive by drive, to demonstrate your points.

Yeah we make mid game adjustments but we doing it too late especially on defense that’s why we falling behind wilks should starting blitzing way earlier in that game he was allowing golf to be way to comfortable in the pocket I think he’s a great coach but he’s trying to run a scheme that he doesn’t have the players for run a scheme that plays to everybody strengths

The red zone defence is lights it's one thing to be able to drive down the field because their a re a lot of very good offenses by the time you get to the playoffs and when you play very aggressive defense you are going to get penalties that's just a reality so this makes it easy for what to use to get down the field and score touchdowns and this is what the NFL wants, however the San Francisco 49ers play very exceptional in the red zone forcing teams to settle for threes without giving up a lot of touchdowns this allows them to stay in the game if their offense struggles a little bit in the first half. Not to mention they have the type of offense that can put up 30 for game. Points that most teams cant get too

Dude the 49ers have looked bad the last few games and kc went into both the bills and the ravens’ stadiums with two totally different game plans and controlled the games. If ravens defense couldn’t guard Kelce why should the niners defense be able to when they’ve been playing average af. Kc’s defense is insane so I don’t know how you’re thinking our awesome defense won’t show up but somehow yours will magically become good enough to take away the unguardable Kelce. He chose to put the game in the hands of the refs and the only consistent thing about refs is that they consistently miss calls or make bad calls because they’re humans who can’t see every single thing on the field in slow motion and have to make decisions in real time. If you put the ball in the refs hands for the chance to go to a Super Bowl for the first time in like half a century then you’re dumb af. If he had not let his team give up on the run game and let the niners come back from the dead and score 17 on them then he wouldn’t have needed a 2 point conversion.
