I think it’s safe to say the Miami Dolphins couldn’t have opened up their 2023 NFL season in a better way than they did vs Chargers on Sunday. But while some might just view this as a very similar performance for the Dolphins offense under HC Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa at QB, things might be a little different for this team in 2023, and it could lead to some major improvements.
For starters, the Miami Dolphins offense might have taken the next step. Alongside Tua, with a WR supporting cast loaded with guys like Tyreek Hill & Jaylen Waddle, then the next wave of Braxton Berrios, River Cracraft, Cedrick Wilson Jr, Durham Smythe, etc, they’re working to stretch their air attack to all levels of the field almost equally, leaving defenses clueless. And with the run game of Raheem Mostert, Salvon Ahmed & De’Von Achane, their two way presence might be better than some think. They’ll just have to hope for offensive line and improvement and wait for a Terron Armstead return.
And in terms of the Dolphins defense, while it didn’t necessarily look the best to start the 2023 season, with additions like new DC Vic Fangio & secondary assistance like Jalen Ramsey & DeShon Elliott to join Christian Wilkins, Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb & Xavien Howard, this side of the ball in due time will undoubtedly be better in 2023 also.

The defense came through in the 4th Quarter. They stopped 3 drives when they needed it most...against a very talented offense. That says something.

And they actually played pretty damn good against the pass. Keeping Herbert at those numbers isn't easy. Only 229 yards, 1 TD, 99.2 passer rating. Also, keeping Keenan Allen to 76 yards and only 6 catches is pretty damn good. Run game was bad, but Ekeler is one of the best RBs in the NFL, so I'm not gonna complain.
Our defense coaches will give anything to the other offense and let them feel comfortable bc they know our offense will put points on the board. They will blitz when needed too this year and they coming

I have been a Miami fan since the 70s and am glad to see the team shaping up so nicely. Regardless of whether you are fan or not, Miami is one of the most fun teams to watch in decades right now. They do have a super difficult schedule this year and I think they are capable of beating anyone when things click. I do think that Achane will be a huge addition to the team over team, hopefully he will be back this week so we can watch him in action. I would love to see Miami vs Detroit in the Superbowl this year, finally something fresh and interesting to watch.
It's great to see them finally doing well. I was born & raised in South Florida. I love to see them doing big things.

You know.... maybe the game plan all along was to deny the Chargers the pass. So they kept running the ball. And at the end they dialed up those blitzes and caught the Chargers off guard.
That was clearly the plan. They were never in run d the entire game it was pass D the entire game.
coming at a QB with the blitz in an obvious passing situation after showing no blitz all day is brilliant and worked perfectly.
Not blitzing earlier probably prompted the shootout. Had the Dolphins lost, the discussion would be how porous their defense is.

Tua was use to doing big numbers in college every week and doing it in 3 quarters or less.
I believe the defense will improve weekly. We need a good run game to take a lil pressure off Tua having to pass so much. I believe Tua will have huge numbers this yr

Agree. People are sleep on the season Tua had last year. He ascended to the elite tier of QBs. He only played 12 and a half games. His 17 game pace was over 4,800 pass yards (would've been 2nd in the league) and 34 Pass TDs (would've 4th in the league). Mahomes and Burrow were the only other QBs in the NFL to be top 5 in both categories last season.

our defense was built around the Blitz. the moment our previous DC tried to call "regular" defense plays he was destroyed. At the end of the game Fangio Dial up 2 blitz and boom.

Exactly. The blitz has always been surprise and overwhelm. If there's a Blitzer 3 out of 4 plays, the offense gets used to it and can find ways to beat it.
Fangio called on the blitz just when it was needed the most.
I hear NE has some injuries on the Oline. Sunday night's game could get very interesting.

Somehow I think Fangio's defense will look very different against the Patriots. Just a hunch, but he has pieces to work with and didn't show a lot against the Chargers.
I think so too. But even if they don't, they'll improve. Fangio is a great coordinator, but a new defensive scheme isn't going to develop overnight. I think Miami will have a top 10 defense by the second half of the season.
Our Linebackers are lacking…. Our old defense relied on schemes and blitzes. Fangio’s needs strong safety play and linebacker play. It’s more traditional, cover two, where our front sevens has to makes plays, without all the tricks. But hopefully Fangio will figure it out. He’s one of the best.
I believe he'll get them better each week if all our players don't end up hurt
Yeah they are one player away from being amazing on defense they need a big run stopping middle line baker which I think will be our first round pick in the next draft the offense is good but I feel we might benifit from putting Liam in at center and put willams at guard and have wyne as our back up tackle for Austin and armstead

The passing game as always was so impressive. Especially tua field vision and getting rid of the ball quickly.
But what was most impressive was the way the "D" dug in and dominated chargers when the pressure was on. THE SOUTH BEACH SPARTANS
As a Dolphin's fan since the first games in the 1960s I was pleasured by circa 30 years of good to great teams, coaching and quarterbacking then torture for the last 20+ years of mediocre coaching, quarterbacking, offenses and defenses. FINALLY!!! FINALLY!!! The Dolphins are a contender again. Tua had the accuracy but his quick release is a relatively new addition and his offensive line, while needing further improvement has moved from mediocre to decently good. And the new defensive coaching has already produced benefits. I hope that Tua's training in jiu jitsu to learn how to fall properly so his brain was not concussed is as protective for him as it should be (falling properly is like rolling with the punch in blocking, it spreads out and defuses explosive impact and is enormously protective). The biggest tests upcoming are w4 buffalo and w7 Philly and w9 Kansas City. All of them are great competitors but I think that a healthy Dolphins team can beat any and all of them. This team has the potential to be an all-time dominant team. Go Phins!!!!
Based on our schedule, we have a VERY GOOD chance at finishing 11-6 or 12-5. Those 5 losses are going up against some really good teams. But we also play at least 9 or 10 games that we should really have no trouble with winning.
It never works out the way we think. Probably end up losing a couple easy looking games on the list

Sorry but a lot of us wanted to see this with the Dolphins.
I’ve been a Dolphins fan since 1985. So many years of heartbreak with talented rosters that on paper should have been SB contenders, yet finding another loss in the WC. That said, this squad has insane talent, yet their rush defense seems non existent via game 1. The game was too close in score for how Hill and Tua padded the stats. Take away the fumble recovery TD from Hill and the fins lose this game. Once again, I’m holding out hope, but just staying realistic at the same time.

The defense is better than what was visible on Sunday. 1. Chargers have elite talent on offense, but also Kellen Moore, who was taking what Fangio was giving him. Vic closed it down when needed, and i think they will continue to do enough, to give the offense what they need to win.
The other 31 teams better go out and buy an air-raid siren, 'cos the airspace is gonna be busy for a long time with Tua looking comfortable at the controls.

Especially on deeper shots like the one he had with Hill in the 1st half this week,..

1. If the Fins can improve on their front line defense, limiting runners to less than 6 yards per game average, then you will see a dominate Fins offense wearing down all defenses and striking 30+ points per game average...
2. If they can improve to at least 3.5 yard rush average, This will for 1 more man from the secondary to the mid field, opening more lanes for Waddle and Hill to exploit...

Hill at his awesome best, just like his heyday with the Chiefs. Combine him with Tua and you have a great weapon if they are both at their best.

I would add that the Chiefs, Buffalo, and the Eagles would be the team to beat if Mahomes, Allen, and Hurts stay healthy! Profound statement you fools say about Tua!
Tua has proven when he is healthy he can play at an elite level. That final TD pass to Hill was as perfectly thrown of a ball as you will ever see. The defense should improve as the season goes on and when Ramsey returns they are going to be scary. The run game is not good and it's clear McD has no faith in. You don't throw the ball 3 times in a row inside the 2 minute warning when you're on the 9 yard line if you have even the slightest bit of confidence in your running backs. It worked this time for Miami, but that's a dangerous game to play. Hopefully rookies Brooks and Achane step up and prove themselves, because we've already seen that Mostert, Ahmed and Wilson are very ordinary.
I take things one week at a time so I won't do a season end prediction, but I do predict by this time next week Miami will 2-0.
Was the concussion issue not brought up in the vid? That’s where the skepticism came from. Which, by the way, is going to negatively effect this team in a big way.

I'm not sure what we saw defensively was an accident (from Miami). Imagine this; knowing your playing Herbert with the passing game they have, they sit in a pass defense the entire game, not believing the Chargers can win with the ground game. The Chargers want to pass, and they did fairly well, but the running game wasn't going to win it for them. That creates an interesting trap for week 2. I expect a strategic flip of focus in shutting down the Patriots running attack in challenging Jones to beat them through the air. Some think and have publicly said that Jones is better or at least as good as Tua, which is just not true. Jones hasn't beaten them yet and I don't expect that to change unless the New England defense can create multiple turnovers. Division games can go either way as they are their own animal, but this is how I think things will play out. Miami 30-17
If the main guys stay healthy 12-5 maybe 13-4 but thats a big if in football. However 12-5 is very realistic.

Lifelong Dolphins fan here…..i was impressed with what i saw but its hard to get hopes up when the Dolphins are known to be the kind of team that can beat the best team in the league one week and lose to the worst team in the league the next so week by week lets go Phins id love a superbowl win in my lifetime.
