I am a fabricator from scotland, i dont do blacksmithing but i am very interested by all your videos.. i have started whatching from the begining of this enterprise. I must say your presentation is very good. I certainly feel i could start a forge tomorrow if i had the space based on you. Please keep doing what you are doing.
From a scotsman...
Thank you very much!
That treadle hammer from Roy would work out awesome in that shop I think so but that's your shop
Those punch holders are slick, beat the tin can I have mine in!
Very nice little projects that help a lot! Thanks John!!!
Somehow I missed the hand tool organizer back when I ordered these for my shop, I'll have to throw that in my cart for next time. Thanks for sharing!
That punch/chisel holder beats the heck out of the "system" I've been using, so thanks for letting us know about it. Just ordered one; I suppose I could have made one myself but Ken's stuff is always better made, so I'm looking forward to being more organized. I probably should have ordered two of them . . . .
Glad I could help!
Great space savers! Thanks for sharing them with us.
Those tool organizers look very handy.
That's pretty neat drill press and angle grinder. I think I'll make me one. Thanks for the tip.
Something going unmentioned in this video is.. using the whole anvil, every facet is a work surface .. you really illustrated that with the propane forge chapter.. there’s a lot of useful tools on an anvil.. 🍻🍻
Ken dose nice work like you John. Thanks as always
Those are some really nice tool holders that Ken's Custom Iron sent to you John. I think you're right on that they can easily be bent into shape without the heat. The tool holders will dress up any shop for sure. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Very nice video today John. Ken's custome iron makes great products. Hope to own some some day. Can't wait to see more updates an projects and many more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep forge lit. Keep making. God bless.
That angle grinder holder looks like just what I need.
Great stuff! I noticed the hacksaws in the background and thought about a future project… Roy at Christ Centered Ironworks has a great video on forging a hacksaw. I loosely followed his plan and made one similar and it’s the greatest hacksaw I’ve ever used. Sturdy and strong but the best part is that it looks fantastic hanging on the wall when not in use! Just a thought!
I have wanted to make my own hacksaw frame.
Great work. 👍👍
Cold peening the tool organizer is the way to go. I got one of those the same time I bought the helper stand. Very useful items. Now I just need to put together the half dozen sets of rapid tongs.
thanks..
You're the best brother! I'm finally getting my blacksmiths shop put together. just gotta finish the forge and build a stand for my vevor 60kg 👍
I have a few of the hand tool holders. I really like them. I pull the tools I need for a particular piece and have a small table beside the anvil/leg vise that I can sit it on. Really helps keep jobs organized instead of fumbling through dozens of tools or having them roll away.
Great idea!
Some good products there, thanks for showing them off.
One of those propane torches that use the little blue bottles would be enough to get those hooks done as well, just a bit slower.
They should make the mortice/tenon's different size or staggered on one end so they can't get flipped around.
😊👍
Good morning
Morning
I bought a cheap "disposable" angle grinder from harbor freight the other day for $11... But maybe a battery one would be better for no-power shop.
Any tips on starting blacksmithing knowing pretty much nothing or having no tools other than simple handy man stuff?
Watch alot of John Switzer videos, and Roy Adams videos. Two of the very best teaching smiths on UA-cam. Literally thousands of educational videos for non knife making smithing.
Blessings and best of luck
Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
@@dragonstonegemironworkscra4740 ty very much 👍
A great way to start is by getting involved with the closest blacksmithing group. A good place to look for a group is at abana.org/affiliates/directory/#!directory/map
John, I just found your channel and it has been such a boon for a (re)starting blacksmith. When talking about cold forging thinner sheet metals, what is the thickest material you would bend cold before you'd suggest heating the part?
It really depends on the tools available and the project. for riveting, I generally cold set anything under 1/4". for bending the hook ends on these projects perhaps 3/16"
@@BlackBearForge that's great information, thanks!
Nice little tool rack's . The hole the keys go through on a post vice bracket how would you recommend i build it and still get a good forge weld or would it be better just to stick weld witch would probably end up using more steel in the construction
The usual method of forge welding is two double the end of the bar over for an inch or so to create a step, this will be the height of the finished hole. That is then bent back on itself with the step on the inside acting as the stand off. This setup defines the width of the finished hole. Francis Whitaker shows it in the Blacksmiths Cookbook better than I can explain it.
Thanks for the info I'll try to look up the book as well
👍
You could have made drive in hooks to do the same thing, but I like Ken"s Customs Iron Works since he is from Minnesota and my name is Ken lol

Now you need a solar powered battery charger for your cordless tools.
I have one I'm using up at the cabin project. It may end up in this little shop eventually
Don't force it, get a bigger hammer.
How much more of a contortionist ya have to be to not get in the way of the camera shot compared to just normal forging?
