Thanks for the shout out Dan I got 4 of them out of the scrap bin in work I am turning 1 into a flatter how about the title the three R’ rough ready recycle now how about turning those lorry twist locks into hardy tools I believe they are an impact steel 👍
Every now and then, you will come across a video that is AMAZINGLY a masterclass video that you can learn from and truly enjoy watching as you are guided through the tutorial by a true craftsman's like Mr. Daniel Moss! 👏👏👏
I think you said it. Rough N Ready. Sounds like a good series title to me. Reforming the purchased hammer was pretty cool. I think more beginners should try this.
thanks a lot Dan for responding the idea with lightning fast. it's just pop out of my head right away. because i know that 'someone should starts somewhere', but sometimes they just don't know how. keep up the good work and keep inspiring. cheers...
I'd go with the 'Rough & Ready' suggestions Dan. Maybe a 'Rough and Ready Forged' series perhaps? I liked the set downs on the reins of the new tongs, farriers have done them that way for donkeys years and I've never understood why more Smith's don't really. Having the reins parallel (one on top of the other) along their full length is much more comfortable in the hand to me than having them off set. I made a pair like the one you did with Tim a month or so before all this cr*p kicked off and he loves them.
That’s awesome work Dan! I’ve converted a small two pounder into a straight peen, had no idea what I was doing! Thanks for sharing and God Bless you sir! Rough and Ready with Daniel Moss!
I would like to propose - making something out of nothing, many of us aspire to owning a custom made hammer, but usually have to make do, your giving us all hope! Keep safe, Dave
RE-FORGE DIY that's what i would call it. I love these vids, i've reground some hammers to suit my smithing needs and my motto is: it aint stupid if it works!
I am really glad you did that, I was wondering if I could save myself some time and start with a hammer shaped object. As a newbie, I don't know a good decision from bad. My instinct says, just go locate a hunk of 4140. But I am new, and working alone in an unequipped shop... Not even a drift yet.
Dan, I just got to this video and it helps a lot! YOU are a MASTER at what you do! I'm mildly disabled enough to where I can't MAKE a hammer but, I think if I make a Guillotine tool and use the fullers on an already made much less expensive hammer that I can come up with something usable! I can't reliably use anything much larger than a 2-pound hammer, anymore so, it will be work, either way! Anything that would take a normal person a couple of hours will take me a couple of DAYS and MANY heats! I guess as long as I'm in the forge and DOING something that's better than NOT doing anything at all! And, when I'm done, as long as I get a good heat treat and temper on whatever I come up with, I guess it was worth it, even if it's just for the experience! Thanks for your expertise and your videos! They are a Godsend!
I'm way behind on these videos from when they were made, this hammer reforging is great, I definitely will be trying these as my first forging projects, just so I can get some descent tools without breaking the bank. I'm 64 years old, I like doing things myself. I've taught myself, with the help of UA-cam videos like these how to do many things, like learning how to MIG weld, how to Stick weld, I will be making a forge, not sure exactly which model I'm going to use yet, I'm looking to make a fairly large forge, which means I'l have to locate it outside and maybe put a roof over it, then putting up walls as needed, but the floor is going to be dirt. Just as a little background on me, I'm a veteran 4 years in USMC, 8 years USN and year and a half in US Army. In the Corps I was was an aviation supply-man, but was checked out as CH53-D door gunner, had several flights in and out of Vietnam between 1974 and 1975, saw some action along the DMZ in Korea in 1975, was on two ships in the Navy, the USS Mississippi CGN-40 and the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70 was a Operations Specialist and in the Army was a Combat Engineer and spent a year in Iraq 2005 and 2006 at age 50. So I've been around the world a few times and have seen and done a lot of things and I guess that's why I like learning to do stuff that many would pay others to do for them. So I really appreciate videos like this to allow me to learn and do new things, this wasn't available when I was starting out, so thank you for taking the time to teach this old war dog new tricks! 😎🐕🦺⚒
I enjoy the one take wonder, 1 take no fakes, but like the fact your just having a mess around, sometimes thats where the enjoyment comes back. So, Dont Trust Me Im A Messing About Blacksmith 🤣
"Rock Steady, Rough and Ready, Adventures In Smithing!" And then a subtitle of the content. A bit lengthy but it rolls off the tongue. 😃 Thanks for the content!👍✌
I've been wanting to try to do this with a few cheep hammers that are just sitting ready to go in the forge and haven't had the guts to try yet. I think I'll just follow your example and lob them in there 😁 Maybe I'll end up with some hammers I can use and add to my blacksmithing kit, who knows LOL 👍
Great video Dan lol safety 3rd style. Kill the paint with fire it turned out great and for the title I know you said rough and ready but I think it'd be cool as rough rumbling rambles shorten as RRR it's kinda be like a tonuge twister as part of the fun
This is a cool idea! I reckon they could be called either "Dan Demos" or "Dan Getting Dirty" because they're more hands-on and less teachy. Or, if it's taking on a challenge (a bit like this one) then it could be "Dan Delivers!"
Dan, I really like wacthing your channel and videos, man I learn so much from you, thank. I'm taking a risk 😂 and really trying to Forge myself. So, thanks alot. Talk soon.
Great video brother excellent camera work exceptional comentary with enough humor to keep folks engaged. So i reckon ifin you were taken by rough n ready you wouldn't be throwing it out there. So ill throw out one.... then keep saving to buy tongs LMBO The " Dan Zone" series. We get to see Dan in the zone problem solving on the fly raw and uncut. Well there's an option for you Ms Ella, pleasure to meet ya M'lady. Got your hands full keeping our Danny boi in line....best of luck, cuz you must be a saint putting up with us!! 💜 Ya Daniel take care brother 🙏 Blessed days now Crawford out ⚒️🧙♂️
Liked this video Dan cheers mate. You could have called this one "Forging Trash To Treasure" but the overall series could be called "Off The Cuff" ie: without preparation.
From alright to exceptional! From trash to class:) either way dan your a smithin magician.... great job as always bro!! Ohh by the way the hammer you made for the raffle is the most amazing hammer i have ever uaed for smithing. Lovely balance and awesome handle. Love the channel! Love the content!! Exceptional work my friend!!!!
"Dont do what I'm about to do" lol I love it. Seems like the labor required to rework the hammer would be more costly than buying a hand forged hammer straight out. Lest you dont have the money and need it changed, then its justified.
I'm really enjoying your rough and ready videos they are a lot of fun....forgive the dad joke but title wise I'd have to go a little old school....Stop, Hammer Time
You've demonstrated that you can, but I wonder if you feel that you *should* - certainly this was great for curiosity (and I am all for scratching that itch) but are there any specific advantages to reforging like this? such as saved time, or cost?
Hey shrimp its most likely not the same for this guy but In a case like mine as an australian, its really hard to find a SINGLE below 100 dollar smithing hammer like this one. I can search far and wide only to find nothing of the sort as blacksmithing simply isnt that popular here. Which brings me to why i want to convert my grandfathers old club hammer into something better suited for the craft
Thanks for the 'Rough Cut & Uncut' video. I have made a rounding hammer from a silver line 2lb lump no cheeks but it does the gob for £6 plus a handle. Your right about the steel quality as I have put some deep gouges in the rounding edge with the corner of my small anvil, but saves the anvil I suppose. Is there an advantage to having the fullers?. Stay safe and all the best from N Yorks.
Fiberglass handle....saw... fiberglass dust.. and then he coughs... Always use protection when working with removing fiberglass! Glad to see you mention it eventually. but man..you only get one set of lungs.
I think more quality and less quantity would be good in your videos Dan. One video a week with detailed content and showing more of your skill and techniques would be great. Its great to see you turn a store bought item into something you can really use rather than buying new steel for projects.
Thank you for your honesty Robert. Most people that don't like the content just leave a dislike and don't say why. Just out of interest what was it about the video you didn't like or is it because I'm popping up to much? I honestly like the feed back and it helps me gauge what's going on. I will say your the first person to do this.
I would also like to add that due to the way UA-cam is set up getting more traffic to the channel would help me a lot. I don't want millions of subs but I would like to do this as a way of supporting myself and my career. For the first time since I opened the shop doors I have started to see the fruits of my labour in a way I hadn't seen possible. I'm enjoying myself. Once again thank you for your honesty however could you embellished a little bit on what you didn't like. Was it the fact I did it using the power hammer. Or was it dude to the lack of commentary as I was working. Just saying it wasn't quality is helpful when the majority of people like the videos. Or seem too.
Its not that I dislike your video Dan but its a bit erratic. I'm trying to get into forging and the small details are important (to me anyway). You have a great way of explaining the details when you do. Just reading the comments and a lot of viewers would name the series "Rough and Ready" and I don't think that your work should be called that even just for a video title! Thanks for your reply.
@@robertogrady1321 but the videos are a but rough and ready. I've asked for idea's on title that would help people locate the well edited ones over the more vloggy ones. Also there are loads of tips in this video that I would often look over or not share as it make the videos long winded.
Thanks for this video, I was thinking of doing it. I wonder how difficult would be doing it without a power hammer. I also want to know if it's possible to forge a hammer from a train track. I couldn't find anyone in UA-cam doing it.
One shot hammer in? Been thinking about this might be a bit much for me with hand hammers but get in a few swings here and there as a long term project maybe.
You could call it the DMZ (the Daniel Moss Zone) and tag the tittle with #DMZ if you want people to know it’s one of those types of uploads. Really enjoying them by the way.👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you , once again relaxed , informative and very easy viewing , How about 'Dans Daily's'. Or 'Just Mossing about' thanks again, loved it .....Mark
Hey Dan, when punching eyes by hand, what are some pros and cons with the different styles of punch? i can think of 3 styles, the flat ended, the diamond end, and the rounded chisel, which i believe you use. I've punched various holes using all these styles, but only a couple hammer eyes. what are your thoughts on all those variations?
i think you have named it ruff n' ready already! id call it : Ruff N' Ready: Reforging a store-bought hammer. id like some wolf jaw tongs, please. heh.
I'd put R&R: at the beginning of the title, rough and ready, and since everyone's cooped up, could be rest and recoop for everyone else by having something actually good to watch, lol. Also, it could also mean rough and raspy after a few weeks of trying to put out that many videos constantly, lol.
It sounds like a “Down and Dirty” or “Quick and Dirty” video series to me. Question. What is the purpose of fullering in between the face and the handle? Does it serve a function, or is it more aesthetics/traditional to blacksmithing?
No real reason of funtion, through the years Blacksmiths hammers have always been square faced with a fuller on one side. To some very talented and creative Blacksmiths change the look of the hammer and people came up with there style and design.now a days, Blacksmiths make many different sizes and shapes to suit there need for what ever project they are working on. If you follow Brent Bailey on YT, he make dozens of different types of hammers and some have Fuller's and some don't. Hope this helps 🙏😊!!
Fullering allows you to move the 'mass' of the hammer head/faces further out from the centre of the hammer eye which alters the hammers balance and striking characteristics. I was told it was originally done to give the hammer more stability "in flight" if you will, by having the mass further out from the centre of the eye it makes it less prone to twisting in the hand as it transverses the arc of the swing. A short thing is easier to rotate around a central point than a long thing is for the same given weight. Speaking of, fullering also allows you to increase the 'reach' of the hammer head without increasing it's weight too. It doesn't hurt that it's also aesthetically pleasing of course but most tools are the shapes they are for a reason.
Would you think that some of the steel back in the 40s or 50s would be maybe better I know it's still a gamble that nowadays they got them weird alloy hammers and sledgehammers
It's all about economic. Who can make the steel the cheapest for the amount of hammers the money man wants to make. The cheaper the steel the more steel you can have for more hammers to make🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️😁😁
A question as requested Dan. I am about to make a hammer (amongst other tools) for my grandson who is made keen on becoming a blacksmith. He is only 9 years old (but built like a 13 year old lol) what style and more importantly what weight hammer should I make for him, so he can hone his skills and muscle memory, while at the same time building his arm/shoulder strength?
Thanks for the shout out Dan I got 4 of them out of the scrap bin in work I am turning 1 into a flatter how about the title the three R’ rough ready recycle now how about turning those lorry twist locks into hardy tools I believe they are an impact steel 👍
I'll look into it for you. Thank you for the hammer dude.
well done George

One Shop stop. One heat only with Dan. 1 vs 1.
The battle of the battery.
The 2 hands forging series.

Great Idea I run across old hammers and new ones was thinking of doing the same to a few of them . Thank you Dan..super job
Very cool, liking these videos mixed in with the others. I'll put forward "Quick Heats" for these one-take wonders.
Thanks for the content!👍✌
Love the series idea. For a title I think "Straight out the Fire" is nice.
Yep, I think "rough and ready" should describe those video's nicely. They are all instructional so all good for me...
I’m just starting out with a backyard forge. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge pal. Well appreciated
I like “just Get it Dan” as a title so this would be the “just get it Dan - hammer renovation video”
From this to that epic transition.... Good luck picking your series name. Hammer looks awesome!!!
New series of videos, "Will It Forge?" Seriously, I love your hammers. Great work my friend
Thanks 👍
Re purposing store bought hammers may be a great title for the video 👍😁
"Generic to Custom, in a few easy steps". Cheer Daniel 🍺👍⚒️❤️
Affordable Blacksmithing tools and tooling! Sounds good to me!
Great video Dan lol safety 3rd style. Kill the paint with fire it turned out great and for the title I know you said rough and ready but I think it'd be cool as rough rumbling rambles shorten as RRR it's kinda be like a tonuge twister as part of the fun
Short cut to an awsome hammer.
That sounds like a name!

Rough & Ready: "And then what the video is about here" I think that would make it pretty clear! and I like the way it sounds! "Rough & Ready"
Down and dirty with Dan Moss. Or should I say Dan and Dirty. Lol. Good stuff as always.
Great video brother excellent camera work exceptional comentary with enough humor to keep folks engaged.
So i reckon ifin you were taken by rough n ready you wouldn't be throwing it out there. So ill throw out one.... then keep saving to buy tongs LMBO
The " Dan Zone" series.
We get to see Dan in the zone problem solving on the fly raw and uncut.
Well there's an option for you
Ms Ella, pleasure to meet ya M'lady. Got your hands full keeping our Danny boi in line....best of luck, cuz you must be a saint putting up with us!!
💜 Ya Daniel take care brother
🙏 Blessed days now
Crawford out ⚒️🧙♂️
Thanks Daniel your amazing and I'm stocked to have your support.
My name suggestion is "From Junk to Hunk". Always wondered if this would be worth doing. Thanks!
Liked this video Dan cheers mate. You could have called this one "Forging Trash To Treasure" but the overall series could be called "Off The Cuff" ie: without preparation.
That came out better than I thought. I like these videos. You can call it on a whim with Daniel. Daniel's deep end. Lol
Brute forging, like brute de forge finishes. It gives it an exotic sound, and blacksmiths who know the term will undoubtedly understand immediately
Reforged from production to perfection, The Dan Moss Way
Rough Forged, I think would be a good title for the series. Not as finished as your regular videos but the basic shape is there
You could call this series “Lockdown & Dirty”, seeing as we’re all stuck indoors watching anyway!
I second this name for title!
Pretty sick battle wound on that left thumb!👍
Yep angle grinder got me.
That's epic dude pleased you like it.
Cool Dan, got my second lil Viking hammer well underway today.
"Dont do what I'm about to do" lol I love it. Seems like the labor required to rework the hammer would be more costly than buying a hand forged hammer straight out. Lest you dont have the money and need it changed, then its justified.
Some Ideas: "Doing it on the cheap" "Quick and dirty" "Non-traditional" "Reduce, Reuse, Reforge" "Outside of the box" :) hope that helps
Dan's forg& hammer ⚒️🔥⚒️ nice title....btw like your blacksmithing skills dan.pat from Belgium ⚒️🔥⚒️
Title could be..."Time to Get Hammered with Dan". Thanx for all the videos. ~
I'm really enjoying your rough and ready videos they are a lot of fun....forgive the dad joke but title wise I'd have to go a little old school....Stop, Hammer Time
A series of "Moss Bites" would be very welcome.
"One Take Wonder" would be a great name
Thanks! Loved the video and the format 😀
I was going to buy a hammer from you a few months ago but I backed out.... Now I want 2... So... I'll keep in touch! Thanks!
Keep up the great work!
Tag/ title You already have it!!!
Rrough and ready !!!
Rough and ready, R&R tag - Real forging. I think you named it already.
DM - burrs on.
Scale series, unbrushed.
that power hammer is a bloody beast
Cool. Video. Tools to make tools..
Great job dan!
Bashing one out eg bashing one out, cheap hammer made better.
Great work dan keep it up
These should be called Fun and random Blacksmithing with Dan, Bits and Bob's, Dan's one offs videos. Hope these help lol
Fiberglass handle....saw... fiberglass dust.. and then he coughs... Always use protection when working with removing fiberglass! Glad to see you mention it eventually. but man..you only get one set of lungs.
Un fuglyization of a useful tool. 😁🍻 It looks good dude. Keep it Mossin'
I think more quality and less quantity would be good in your videos Dan. One video a week with detailed content and showing more of your skill and techniques would be great. Its great to see you turn a store bought item into something you can really use rather than buying new steel for projects.

And I also think this might come across as a little shit but there's only one dislike on this video and all the others have few dislike as well.
I would also like to add that due to the way UA-cam is set up getting more traffic to the channel would help me a lot. I don't want millions of subs but I would like to do this as a way of supporting myself and my career. Maybe a "Scratcher Video"? Reference to kitchen/bathroom tattoo shenanigans. That's pretty rough and ready.
Moss Makes It Great.
Or
Daniel Moss The Blacksmith Boss
Thanks for this video, I was thinking of doing it. I wonder how difficult would be doing it without a power hammer.
I also want to know if it's possible to forge a hammer from a train track. I couldn't find anyone in UA-cam doing it.

Great stuff mate. I enjoyed it. For a title, it may be click baitish but meh clicks are good........ "can i do it, lets find out"
Thanks for the instructional, noticed your touchmark is same as mine, only yours is a bit bigger.
Very tidy work Dan🖒
I was just thinking of doing this. Haha perfect timing! Do you have any reason why you like round faces vs square faces ?
Thank you , once again relaxed , informative and very easy viewing , How about 'Dans Daily's'. Or 'Just Mossing about' thanks again, loved it .....Mark
Thank you Mark I tjink we went with R and R or ruff and ready 😂
Rough & real... is my suggestion
I like the raw aspects of this. How about "Mucking About"?
Dan's Bash and Dash
Rough Cut
TMIB - Quick Bits
Brilliant, can you try to do it by hand? As many people sadly don't have power hammers. Thanks 😊
I know that I'm sorry. If this was a lass mess about and a how to I might depends on if lots of people want it.
Nice one dude like that. I'll answer it this week.
Hammer time!!!
On The Fly!!
Great vid sir 👍
i think you have named it ruff n' ready already! id call it : Ruff N' Ready: Reforging a store-bought hammer.
id like some wolf jaw tongs, please. heh.
I’d like to have that hammer Daniel!!! I recently accepted a teaching position at a local college here in Arizona, USA 🇺🇸
I reckon you should call it NO THRILLS smithing ,that might get some attention .
Great video as normal don't know if you would be interested but how about a video on your forge ie the breakdown and maintenance of it
I'd put R&R: at the beginning of the title, rough and ready, and since everyone's cooped up, could be rest and recoop for everyone else by having something actually good to watch, lol.
What he asked?
Some lovely anvils I'd like to smack with my hammer against....great video, great information, keep up the fantastic work
Over the Anvil, rough and ready series.
Nice.., How to order hammer?
👍👍👍👍thank you
I actually really like the shape of the head
Would you think that some of the steel back in the 40s or 50s would be maybe better I know it's still a gamble that nowadays they got them weird alloy hammers and sledgehammers
It's all about economic.
Who can make the steel the cheapest for the amount of hammers the money man wants to make. The cheaper the steel the more steel you can have for more hammers to make🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️😁😁
A day in the shop?
A question as requested Dan. I am about to make a hammer (amongst other tools) for my grandson who is made keen on becoming a blacksmith. He is only 9 years old (but built like a 13 year old lol) what style and more importantly what weight hammer should I make for him, so he can hone his skills and muscle memory, while at the same time building his arm/shoulder strength?
Nice question and I'll give answering it ago in a video soon. I've made a lot of tools for kids so should be to hard to answer.
@@danielmoss2089 Thank you Dan I appreciate it Cheers
@@danielmoss2089 Oh by the way Forge Wright is Andy lol
RAW IRON!
I think, FROM TRASH TO TREASURE is a good option, and maybe T&T to shorten it a little bit. I hope it helps.
How about Ferrous Bodging?
