That’s a little scary because the RICOCHET could theoretically re-stabilize and accelerate. But it would cauterize the wound so it’s all good.
Why if you're wearing body armor and the bullet gets suck in your plates and keeps firing?
@@isveryniceyes "ROCKET POKE!"
Didn’t think about body armor, but if the bullet struck something… remaining fuel would continue to propel the bullet. Rocket. Whatever….
Now I'm considering the effect on a car, in the engine bay melting hoses and wires...
Hmmm engine block. Make the bullet out of magnesium and ensure the remaining fuel is hot enough to ignite the magnesium. It would have to be a sizable amount of magnesium to burn for a while. This is an interesting concept for the 1960’s.
The unscheduled removal of the barrel isn’t a malfunction, it’s a feature. One in ten shots will have a critical hit by increasing the projectile mass.

The barrel thing is genius. When a gyrojet malfunctions and gets stuck in the barrel what you want it for it to leave anyway, with the barrel. What you don't want is it staying there and spewing its entire rocket load in your face.
This channel might be the first one that has gyrojet squib load and the first one with unique barrel malfunction, *RECORDED* , which in a way is fricking amazing, Brandon and the boys become the first one in history to record them.
They did indeed.
Demos video?
The Gyrojets were built like a well-made cap gun at best.
They used a single cylinder of nitrocellulose. If the rounds were ever dropped, that big grain of powder can crack and cause a more rapid burn rate. Your accuracy was definitely better than what we saw.

Awesome footage to see. Not something I would want as a primary but badass collector's piece.
Side note: Tinnitus sucks. I've resorted to sleeping with headphones most nights. GF is a light sleeper so fan on high doesn't work and it barely silences the weeeeeeeeeeee 24/7.
We were driving the other day in my old Jeep and i heard a vacuum leak that I thought was stopping when i accelerated. She turns the radio up and asks "How doesn't that high pitched sound doesn't bother me?" I responded "it goes away when I'm on the gas and I'll fix it when we get home" She looks at me and said" Oh you really can't hear that constant sound that lessens when you hit the gas??" I legitimately could only hear the lower tone, higher pitch she's hearing is gone.
When she started shooting I made sure hearing protection was top priority after teaching her safety. When we shoot indoors she will wear foamy and amplifier muffs. I made those mistakes younger and in trainings shooting blanks without ear pro.

Mini back blast is good for a chuckle until you get turned into a flaming stunt man with something bigger
This is genuinely historical footage. It both shows the validity of the principals of the gyrojet concept, and it's flaws.
Awesome work everyone.
Most of the flaws, other than obviously the fact that the projectile doesn't reach max velocity until after it's already left the barrel, are a product of the design not being fully perfected or the ammo being either improperly manufactured, or just degraded due to time.
I'd argue that if you were to make this with modern tools, you could fix a solid chunk of the issues. Hell, you could probably add deployable fins so that you don't need the angled exhausts, which would massively simplify manufacturing for the ammo.
@@kiritotheabridgedgod4178 tbh you could always make this into something closer to a rifle so the rockets have more time in the barrel.
@@102ndsmirnov7 it would be an unwieldy rifle, the rounds reach top velocity a solid five to ten metres from the barrel. Plus, the advantage of a weapon like this, is that it can be extremely small and lightweight without compromising on recoil, velocity or stopping power. The main advantage a rifle-like platform would bring to this, would either be moving the hammer, firing pin and magazine further up the weapon, thus keeping it further from your face, or giving you a better grip and stance for aiming. Although you'd realistically have to do both if you wanted to mount an optic on it.
@@102ndsmirnov7 make it capable of full auto and add some explosive filler into it and you basically have a bolter.
The poor hammer podcast the main host an actual physics engineer scientist was literally arguing about in two weeks ago saying bolters wouldn't work and I've also recently seen firearms experts saying its useless, prop experts saying its useless, armorers saying its useless and scientist saying its useless. This video literary disproves all known common knowledge of its usefulness and might start a new market and Poduction of similar firearms.
ThankYou for not showing the perfect headshot on slow mo. The moment you guys finally got a perfect dead center headshot i was like oh God please i don't want to see the effects of the rocket bullet on a perfect headshot. Awesome job guys. Excellent. 👌🏼

This has to be one of the coolest gun videos I have seen. The Ballistic High Speed guys made this incredible.
Now imagine a roughly 20mm Gyrojet being fired at about 300 or more rounds a minute with explosive projectiles and you've got a bolter from 40K.
Lets call it Ak20
That's just the 40 mm
TBF the bolter appears to be a hybrid of the gyro jet and traditional rounds. If you notice most media that depicts them will have spent casing drop on the ground. It makes me think that the bolt uses an initial powder charge to get the projectile up to speed and the jet to flatten the trajectory. Would explain why they are effective in close range
At $200 a round I do hope you can get a volume discount on them...
@@nekrosus7734 WH-40K, It’s already a good name for a gun
17:52 There is something profoundly hilarious about watching a gun shoot out it’s own barrel!!
I KNOW RIGHT!!
Brings to mind one of the old school gunsmiths (P.O. Ackley?) strength testing military bolt actions for strength. The Japanese Arisaka action did not fail. The barrel stripped its threads. I always had visions of that barrel shooting down range.
Just like professional weight lifter…. ONE GOOD PUSH!!! And boom goes the O ring
Cave Johnson wasn’t going to stop at firing just 100% of the round.
OMG that was sooooo funny!!!
Love this video. Saw one of these at the NRA museum in Fairfax VA. One of the curators said that its one of the most interesting pistols in their collection. He also mentioned that it had some interesting use cases in Vietnam. For one, operators would attach a wire to them to shoot through the jungle canopy as a form of an antenna for comms. Unfortunately due to the environment, it was not as reliable due to moisture getting into the rocket motors.
The problem has always been the ammo which even when it was first introduced, had severe quality control problems one among many is the 4 holes at the base of the bullet/rocket which required very precise drilling else the bullet would not stabilize correctly.
The weak barrel retention makes me think it was a fail safe component. If you get a squib or misfire in one of those you are literally going to be holding your hand in the jet's exhaust to maintain safe control. Maybe the thought was "it is better to launch the barrel down range than burn off fingers." Not a good design, but could have been a design feature of the flaw.
I was wondering that. It would make a lot of sense. I really hope that, when they fix the Gyrojet, they don’t change that feature. Just make a bunch of barrels tbh, that seems like a better idea
Ah, the old "it's not a bug, it's a feature" defense.

Brandon said in the video that the designers may have thought that there wasn't going to be much contact between the barrel and projectile. The "barrel" looks like a simple aluminum tube. I bet with the temperature of the rocket's and how many round they put through it the barrel started expanding due to the heat. Since it's inside a steel frame it can't expand outward so it ended up pinching the ID smaller. Round then gets stuck and the little bent tab had no hope of keeping it in.
Misfire, misfire, burst rocket, barrel as a projectile.

I wonder if rifling the barrel would impart a crazier spin on the round? I kind of wonder how that might effect the round…
I am soon 75 years old and remember when this launcher came out. I was in High School. It was supposed to be our Space Gun for our Space Troops. You were supposed to be able to set the muzzle velocity by adjusting the tension of the hammer spring. You could set it for max velocity right out of the muzzle or to get max speed at 50 yards. They claimed it was as powerful as a 45 ACP.
As you found out, the problem was the ammo. Unreliable, inaccurate and very expensive.
Great Video!
I don't think the ammo would be so expensive if the weapon that uses it wasn't such a rare novelty
@@deskmat9874 completely agree, but if there were flaws, no reason to produce more
I wonder if with modern tech if you could make a modern one without the negatives..
@@zakofrx Someone would have to try, and would have to make both more modern, better ammo and certainly a better designed gun to fire it. That barrel thing is just bad design man.
I can't see why modern gyrojet ammo couldn't be made. The rounds would need to be created using CNC processes and some novel blend of propellants, and as such would not be cheap, but that's the nature of R&D.
The barrel was held in with a tab of metal, some glue, and a dream.
That was an eventful and interesting episode, well done. The high speed adds so much to something like that.
The gyrojet was designed initially for space combat. If fired in the vacuum of space then cooling wouldn't be an issue.
Also: the barrel coming out is a feature, not a bug. You don't want the wielder to have sustained burns on their hands.

The only bullet that can pass through something and regain it's speed. That's kinda dope.
Originally these were supposed to shoot without the barrel inserts, the holes you see on the frame are there to let the jet fire's pass out the sides but the bullets burned the users too much and the initial speed of the bullet was too low so they added in those silver pipes, with the pipe installed more thrust is produced.

Another gamer cringetard
The terrifying fact is. Even without going super sonic. It’s continuous acceleration and stablization. Means you could potentially kill multiple enemies in one shot. And it’s so quiet it’s like a stealth weapon. No ear protection required to fire Most Vietcong were likely suffering from hearing damage and so were US soldiers. So most folks during the war would have never had a chance to hear this weapon go off even if it was fired over their heads. It’s odd non standard and experimental. But the gyro jet had (and still has tbh). Crazy combate potential. I think its design would actually help simplify construction and manufacturing of the actual firearm itself as well. Though the ammo is a special case of the opposite. Lol. Crazy awesome gun
That was awesome seeing them all fire, especially in slow motion. I never even heard of that weapon before.
What surprised me about the gyro jet is that there’s a Carbine version and an underwater version called the Lancejet. They look amazing.
I had to look those up, very very cool looking, wonder if anyone could get one as I only seen a picture of them in the national firearms museum 🤔
On a sidenote: how about finding and testing an honest to God Russkie underwater assault rifle? That would be epic! Do the high-speed camera guys have scuba gear?
I am not too surprised that the barrel took off, the Gyrojet pistols are built VERY cheap, the body of the gun is two pieces of pressed zinc alloy, and the barrel is a smooth steel tube, the thing feels like a toy in your hand.
The expectation is that the gun won't have to withstand any real pressure, and maybe that was more realistic when the ammo was fresh, but this is now 60 year old solid rocket fuel, and the ammunition was noted even at the time for having poor consistency.
So a gun made outta cheap ass materials but has ammo costing the same as my grocery list, makes sense.

Yours had power, pop, full ignition and actually hit their targets and they were fast and hard hitting! I have NEVER seen any other Gyrojet rocket ammo fire, fly or hit as good as yours did!
That was insane w/ the barrel coming out.
I can safely say I have NEVER seen that happen on a firearm before.
Awesome footage 👍
One thing to consider is that most rounds hit a target and lose a lot of their momentum. This is a ROCKET. You can see it on one of the slo-mo's the rocket correcting itself and getting ready to go some more. These don't lose "focus"!!!!
"I have been launched, I most go until fuel is depleted" -- There is just a course correction.
I kind of want to see what happens when they impact body armor now.
The rocket knows where it is, and it knows where it wants to be.
18:10 The barrel's like, "Aight, I'm gonna head out".
It may be a prototype, but this is hands down the coolest gun and bullet ever designed by man. I love it!
holy shit, this video is fucking awesome. It's great enough that you actually got a gyrojet in the first place, but then you got the highspeed cameras, AND the damn thing shot the barrel out the front and you got highspeed footage of that too... which looked hilarious, by the way. Honestly all of it kinda did, something about those little rockets just makes it all look like a cartoon, especially with the slow motion effect. You can actually see your face getting blasted with the heat from the rockets.
One of the reasons that it failed was the difficulty of manufacturing the ammo. Specifically, drilling the four angled venturi at the base of the rocket. But with the advances in manufacturing techniques, it could be done much easier and cheaper today. Someone needs to bring back the Gyrojet! Are you listening Brandon???
AK-GyroJet coming soon
Oh no… no no no. We’re not going through this again. We’re going to have GTA 6 before we have an AK-50, and you already want him to make a fucking rocket pistol too? No.
These things basically use a solid rocket fuel. That stuff does not age well, and is extremely susceptible to cracking, especially when dropped or even jostling during shipping. If those are 60 year old rockets, I’m very surprised that even one out of 5 works. That said, it would be pretty easy, with today’s technology, to make more. I definitely wouldn’t want to get hit with one, especially at close range, as the hot gasses, will cause air bolus! Awfully nice of the rocket to cauterize the wound for you, on its way through!
I believe the UA-cam channel Backyard Ballistics is/was working on that exact thing. He's even posted some videos of him testing propellant formulations and casing variants for a modern take on the gyrojet!
@@TheBauwssss That dude must really love failure.
Finally BallisticHighSpeed getting some features - those guys are the best firearms channel in a long time!
Amazing! The gyrojet is one of my favorites! Thanks for the great video, these things are so cool!
OMG...the barrel flying out like a mini-missile is the best thing I have seen in firearms in a looooong time!!! Thanks Brandon!!! You made the subscription worth it!
Yep. This thing just decided "Screw it, I'll shoot the ultralong rocket now!"
Upgrading the caliber on the fly.
The super slow mo of the barrel exiting is the coolest and funniest thing I’ve ever seen on a gun video. Thank you for your service Brandon!
Watching this is in slow-mo makes it easy to imagine shooting yourself with the same projectile you used to shoot your target. That thing bounces weird and does a 180, that's a good ole fashioned switch-a-roo.
I can read Brandon's mind at 17:35...he's like..."I know it doesn't have a barrel, but stop flagging me bro 🤣"
