How to Use Your Pool Heater, Put it into Spa Mode & Helpful Tips (Jandy JXi shown)

- If your heater is not connected to an automated system, turning it on and heating up your pool and spa can be confusing. Almost all heaters have a simple to use control panel that you can use to turn on the heater and set the desired temperature. In this video I am using the Jandy JXi Pool & Spa Heater but your heater is probably very similar to it.
On the heater itself is the control panel and from there you can turn the heater on and set it for pool or spa mode. Once the pool pump is on you can then set the heater to the desired temperature and turn it on. If you are going to heat an attached spa, you will have to turn the valves to spa mode. I go over that in detail in the video.
Let me go over some common mistakes and user errors when it comes to manually setting your heater.
I see these mistakes out on my pool route and once you know about them you will be much wiser when using your heater.
Heater has no power?
The buttons on the heater will not function unless the pool pump is turned on. If you are trying to turn on the heater outside of the pool's daily timed run cycle you will need to turn the pump on at the timer box. Once the pump is on and running you should see the control panel on the heater activate. Now you can set the heater to the desired temperature and mode - either pool or spa mode.
Can I heat the Pool with the Spa Settings?
You can heat the pool from either “Pool” or “Spa” mode but the heater has a dedicated mode for a reason. In each mode you can set a desired temperature and the heater will save that set temperature for you. So if you turn on your heater to heat your pool and you press the “Spa Heat” button the pool will then heat up to whatever temperature is set for the spa. Usually it is set at 98-100 degrees. So the pool will heat up to 98-100 as if it were the spa. So it is best to use the “Pool” button and set that temperature to your desired level, usually 80-85 degrees. So both buttons will turn on the heater but each button has a set temperature for either the pool or spa.
How do I put my Heater in Spa Mode?
This is a very common problem and I think the pool valves can be a little hard to figure out. The majority of pools use Jandy valves, notice that the small handle part is the “on” position and the large flared part marked “off” is the off position. The suction line valve is located right in front of the pool pump. Turn this valve handle completely to the opposite direction. Then find the return line valve handle and turn that one completely to the opposite position. The return valve is the one coming out of the heater. Once you have both of these valves turned you should be in “Spa Mode.” After doing this several times you will get the hang of it. When done make sure you turn the valves back again so that it will be in “Pool Mode” when the timer starts up later that day or the next day. Otherwise the pool will remain off all week and it will be circulating only the spa.
Why is my Heater running the next day still?
One thing that you must do when you finish using the heater, besides turning the valves back to pool mode from spa mode is to turn off the heater. Most heaters have a pretty obvious “off” button. The heater may turn off during use once it reaches the set temperature but to actually turn it off after use you will need to hit the “off” button on the heater itself when you are done using it. Note also that if you turn the pump off before turning off the heater and you push the “off” button on the heater, it will not turn off. Remember, for the buttons to be active the pump must be running. So before turning off the pool pump, hit the “off” button on the heater. If you fail to do this the heater will be running every time the pool turns on for it's timed programmed cycle. So the pool can potentially be heated all week and in most cases if you were using the spa and turned the valves back to pool mode the pool will heat up to the spa temperature (98-100 degrees) giving you quite hefty gas bill.
My Spa is draining down after I used it last night?
Unless it is a bad check valve chances are you didn't turn the valve completely back to pool suction and it is still partially open to the spa suction. Since most spas have a small bypass returning water to it, even a small amount of suction from the spa drain will cause it to drain down. Just make sure that you turn the valves completely back to pool mode when done.
So these are some common user errors and mistakes that are made when using the pool heater. One way to ensure that the heater will not turn on after using it is to shut off the gas line after each use. Many heaters are installed with a simple shut off handle and this is a great way to insure you won't get hit with a giant gas bill.

Amazing content. Thank you!!
Thank you mr, your informatión was very importan for me. ✌
Any ideas how to fix or what the problem could be?
Great video, thank you. Everything was perfectly explained. When setting up the Aqualink, how do I know if I have a TSTAT 2-wire or a Hi-Lo-Com 3-wire connection? I'm not ever sure what that means. The pool servicer was too busy to help me set it up, so I'm waiting for another to come help me set up my new pool.
It depends on the automated system. You can call Jandy to see which one you should use.
Hi, What gauge wire do I use for connecting thie JXI heater to the PSL4 (heater is within 6 feet of controller) for remote operation? Can I use Spa and Com or do I have to use Pool and Com on JXI Logic board. Thanks
Thank you for posting this video, very helpful.
My pool/spa was left in spa mode for a couple hours, now my Jandy heater is telling me to "check flow" , and I'm new at this. What do I do to fix it?
Thx
Thank you fo the video. Could you tell me how to disable the remote setting back to OFF so I can turn on the heater manually.
I would give Jandy Tech support a call and they can help you with that:

I have a question concerning the heater once it's on it sounds like there is a pair of tennis shoes in the dryer banging around so I contacted a pool specialist and he told me that the piece that I need is a heater coil that has possible corrosion around it it......he said the part is the most expensive, coning in at around 1200
That is a great way to describe that sound - which I have heard before in heaters out in the field. I like describing it as small woodland critters running around on the inside of the heater, but I like your description better. Usually that is caused by the air/water mixture. If you have a variable speed pump make sure it is on the maximum RPM when heater is running. If it is set to high or if you have just a standard pump, calling a technician out to adjust the air/water mixture is needed. It is a pretty specific adjustment and only the manufacturers recommended warranty tech can do it. Look online at your heater manufacturer's site and find a local warranty company who can service it (note that even if your heater is out of warranty, the best companies to call are actually those who do the warranty work for the manufacturer - if that makes sense).
How do you take off the remote tstat
Thanks for the great video! My spa is at 62 degrees and I put it at 99 like you, how long will it take to heat up? Also, how much damage do you do to your energy bill? :)
About 25-30 minutes. Figure about $10.00 for 2 hours of use.
Hi I want to install the Hayward 140 BTU heat pump but the manual states I need 24 inches of clearance on all sides. I do not have that luxury I would need to install it on one side about 6 inches away from the house only on one side. Will this be a problem or can I still go ahead and purchase and install? Thank you
I suggest calling Hayward Tech Support directly - you don't want to do anything if it will be a hazard of any kind. Hayward:866-429-7665
Great Video! I've got a Jandy 400LXi but can't seem to put it into the Setup Mode you demonstrate (press all 3 buttons simultaneously for 7-10 seconds)... Does that indicate a bad keypad, or perhaps some larger issue? The unit is currently in "** Remote T-Stat Enabled ** mode, but doesn't appear to be calling for heat properly. I was going to just put the unit in Manual mode to see if that would work to isolate my problem further.... Any tips? Thanks!
I would call Jandy/Fluidra tech support. Maybe it is a warranty issue.
@@SPL Thanks! I just tried again, and was able to at least able to disable the "Remote T-Stat Enabled" mode... the heater fired up and is now warming the pool manually.... Doesn't seem to be a physical issue (like a bad button or controller).. something about the remote sensing doesn't seem to realize that it should be calling for heat or doesn't recognize the threshold temperature properly. I'll give Jandy a call tomorrow. Appreciate the help / response! Have a great day.
Hi, we have Jandy JXI pool heater yesterday we had a power outage and the heater now reads "Fault check versaflo". would you know how to reset the heater. thank you.
You may have to call Jandy on that one on monday. 800) 822-7933
I just got a Jandy JXI400NK natural gas heater with the built in Versaflo. I want to connect it to my Pentair PSL4 controller. Can I use the RS-485 com port with the Pentair Com port to control the pool heater with automation? I’d like to use the full functionality of the pool heater if possible. Thanks.
You would have to call Jandy Tech support on that one.
Should I hear the igniter kick on? I have done everything you said and there is no hot air coming out and the water remains cold after an hour. I have plenty of propane in my tanks. Also there is no indicator lights saying that there is a problem
Yes, the igniter should kick on. The valve to the propane is open? I have to ask.
@@SPL I'm having the same issue today, everything is clear and I have propane, I'm not hearing an igniter switch or heater turn on even though remote said it's on,, please help! And my pool is new and this is the first time I've had this issue
Something say aux is not on
Hey man sorry to bug you on a Sunday. I’m getting a check flow set on my zodiac propane heater. Last week I just took off the out flow cover (water flow was air locked) turned it on and quickly replaced the cover. It water flow was fine and heater came on. Today it just won’t come on and check flow set won’t go away.
Help me Doc!
same issue with mine, check flow set shows up on the screen
Receiving the error message "Check Flow Set". Any suggestions on a fix? Assuming the volume of water is not meeting the minimum threshold.
Try running the pump at full speed - if it is a VS pump.
How do you fix the check flow
Filter clean
I'm having issues connecting the aqua link pdaremote to the jandi jxi heater. The heater shows the remote is enabled but the remote shows heater is off line. How do I turn the heater back on line?
Give Jandy tech support a call. That is an odd issue.
Hello, I set my jandy to 104 on the spa but it doesn't feel like its 104. But on the screen it says it is at 104. I clean the filters and it still feels the same. Any idea what could be the issue?
Is it connected to an automated system?
@@SPL do you mean like a timer on the heater that it should turn off after a certain time?
@@eridiaz6981 No, just wanted to know if there is a separate temp sensor set up with your equipment. If you have an Aqualink panel there is a temp sensor for the automation.
@@SPL it is connected to the iaqua link.
I'm running into an issue where the screen on my heater is showing the pool as 87 but when I look at the heat in the iaqualink app its showing the pool at 70. Do you know what could be happening here ?
It might be a bad temp sensor on the automation.
I have a Hayward R400 and when I fire it up to heat the hot tub, it sounds like it’s popping corn on the inside. It eventually stops but I am concerned it could be dangerous
It sounds like the air/gas ratio is off. If you are using a VS Pump make sure it is running at the full 3450 RPM. If your pump is running at full speed and you heater still makes the loud rattling noise a technician needs to come out from Hayward and adjust this. It can only be adjusted by a trained technician. If you go to Hayward's Website you can find a local service tech in your area who can adjust this for you.
Is this gas specific or can you use propane as well?
Natural Gas specific.
Mine worked great for 2 weeks
..I set it on 88 degrees and water showed to be that or higher during the day….
Then one day I noticed lots of water at bottom… also had it set at 88 degrees but the next morning water was at 84…. Fan is spinning but not heating up like it did the first couple weeks
It could be something simple like the winterizing plug is leaking. But any leak from the heater is not normal.
I’m more concerned with it not heating up… it held the set temp for about 3 weeeks straight and then all of a sudden it stopped heating
What speed do you set the pump for good jets in the spa?
3100 RPM or higher works.
@@SPL Doesn't have the power of a stand alone fiberglass jacuzzi. But thanks for the info.
I don’t have a hot tub or spa feature. When I turn on the heat from the remote the spa light on the handy heater turns on. Is this ok. Or should the pool light turn on?
It doesn't matter which one you use if you don't have a spa.
@@SPL thank you so much. I appreciate the info.
On my heater it says “check flow” what does that mean? What do I need to do?
Not enough water is going through it.
En españis
Does that spa have a bubbler?
No. Just the jets on full blast
Can u help mine says turned on and went and said check flow settings???
I'm sorry, it turned on and was starting to heat up then it stopped and said check flow settings????
Maybe pump speed is set to low or filter is dirty
My heater is not coming on how can I turn it on there is nothing coming up in the screen
Could be the breaker or if it is connected to an automated system that will supersede the controller on the heater.
All well and good when you can see the display. I just purchase a house and the heater doesn't seem to have any power going to it or the display is out.
It could be connected at the automation if you have a panel. So the screen only comes on when you hit the heater button. I am guessing here.
What does no flow mean. Everytime I hear my pool my handy system says that
It just means the water is probably not moving fast enough to activate the heater -if you have a VS pump turn up the speed when you heat it.
@@SPL ok one more question man. So the house I’m renting let’s us heat our pool/slash hot tub witch is attached. Everytime I hear the hot tub to 100 degrees the pool gets to the same temperature too. Am I doing something wrong
My heater shows nothing, it’s just blank, I have no idea what happen?
There is a fuse, maybe it has blown. Give Jandy a call and they can help you.
@@SPL can I install a jandy heater with easy touch pentair?
