    Finally!! A video that shows you how to connect to the skimmer. I inherited an existing pool, so there are no manuals or instructions. I didn’t even know what a skimmer was let alone how to connect.

    That's a great way to block your suction line , we always use a vacuum plate so the basket is between your debris and the pump

    After u hook up ur hose to the vac head, take the other end and walk it out over the pool twisting it as you go to straighten out the hose, that way when you prime it into the pool it wont be all tangled up.

    OK I am a pool novice with my first private pool, after watching within 10 minutes was cleaning my pool. The only thing I found that was bad practice was you need to put the hose through the skimmer mouth not over that top, apart from that very helpful and thank you so much.

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому +3

      It is okay to put over the patio, or through the skimmer. Our techs often go over the patio for quick disconnect when they are done with one job and have to move on quickly to the next. Whichever way is better for your pool/comfort level is the way to go!

    THe skimmer is also normally hooked to a bottom suction drain so you would not have sufficient vacuum at skimmer unless turning off drainline from bottom of pool and also possibly a second skimmer.. I like to bring hose in through skimmer instead of over top but maybe just to keep from stretching hose when at opposite end of pool.

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  5 років тому +1

      Many pools do have the skimmer and main drain tied together. Many have them valved separately in front of the pump (as most of ours do) and you can get more suction if the main drain is closed a bit. In a vinyl liner pool though - one has to be careful they don't vacuum with too much suction it can pull or tear a vinyl liner if it is too strong.

    I use the same exact objects for the pool in the hotel I take care of! But yes doing backwash sucks in more water, making the vacuum better at doing its job, I also close the main line so that only the skimmer line sucks water. When I’m done I put everything how it was, but usually I find a lot of the debris Inside the pump, and I clean it out, but yeah everything on the video was explained well for people that are starting to have to vacuum their pool. Also don’t forget to clean your skimmer baskets😂👍🏼 great job!

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, backwashing cleans out the bed of sand so it can trap more debris. Just make sure not to vacuum on the backwash setting or you will be adding debris to the filter itself!

    Great video! What’s the best way to remove the hose when your done?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  5 років тому

      That is a tricky one - there's no easy way to remove the hose. It could be wound onto a reel like a garden hose - it can be taken out and wrapped by hand, or there are some helpful clips for it. That one is going to take practice and developing your own personal style!

    Do you need to adjust the pump settings before or after vacuuming? What about a variable speed pump?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      Each system is different. Likely with a variable speed pump you'll want to be somewhere in the middle speed wise, or you could generate too much flow and crimp the hose. It's trial and error to find the right settings for each pool.

  • @jgl4494
    @jgl4494 6 років тому +13

    Great information but you should connect the hose through the skimmer mouth not over the deck. Works better.

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому +5

      There should be no operational difference with the hose over or through the skimmer. Personal preference.

  • @KeepHammering7

    I don’t have any suction out of my skimmer- I think it’s a setting on the pump but any ideas ?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      If the filter needs to be cleaned, that could restrict suction. Also if you have valves and the main drain is open and skimmer closed that should be opened before vacuuming.

  • @effiee8670

    Just found this, and in the middle of vacuuming my pool, but What setting should your pump be on? You do turn the pump on right?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      Yes, the pump needs to be on to move the water to vacuum. The filter can be set to regular filtration mode.

  • @springhillgolfer878
    @springhillgolfer878 5 років тому

    The pool builder put the skimmer in the wrong place (the deep end of the pool.) It should be on the side and exactly in the middle of the pool---so your vacuum hose can reach the steps in the shallow end as well as the deep end. You would probably need a 30 foot hose (instead of the standard 25 ft hose) to reach all the way to the steps in this case. And yes, no need to run the hose under and through the overhang into the skimmer....just bring it on top and drop it in.

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      I believe builders would address the location of skimmers considering a variety of factors. Being able to purchase a long vacuuming hose is certainly easy enough if there were other reasons they placed the skimmer in this location. *Note: we did not build this pool, only serviced for a time.

    In what position filter should be? Do you close other skimmer for better suction?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      The filter can be in filter mode. Waste is also good if you need to lower the water level in the pool or if the pool is extremely dirty. Yes, a second skimmer can be closed or plugged for better suction.

  • @lindacuilla859

    The hose does not feed into the water like the way you did it. It kept floating on top. I used the returns to fill the hose with water. Thanks for your tips.

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      It does take practice to get it to prime this way, and even with practice sometimes the hose just won't cooperate. Using the returns is a good quick way to get it done!

    Is it better to have a vacuum plate over the siphon filter and filter sock? Sounds like less junk through the lines is a better idea.

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      You could use a vacuum plate and use the skimmer. We tend to get large debris with a net first and then vac.

  • @yixiangharry
    @yixiangharry 4 роки тому

    why do you take out the skimmer basket, how do i filter or capture leafs or sand from the pool then?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      The pump basket will catch any debris before it enters the filter. You should use a net to get any large debris before you vacuum.

  • @juangodinez8237

    Ok but what if at the moment you plug in your hose to vacuum the pump is not on to suck? What do you do to activate it?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      The pump should be on when you connect the hose to vacuum, or you can connect the hose and then turn the pump on.

    what mode my pump should be in case of vaccum the poll? is it correct with "filtration" mode,m

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      Filtration mode is the most common to vacuum on. You can also vacuum on waste, but the water will be going out the backwash drain instead of returning to the pool, resulting in having to add more water if it gets too low.

    My hose is too small for the filter hole. Is there an adapter?

    • @Askthepoolguy
      @Askthepoolguy  4 роки тому

      There are adapters that can be screwed into skimmers - or depending on your skimmer set up there may be a specific hose size/style you need to use.

    out of curiosity why do we manually vacuum pool when one can do it with robotic vacuum while pump is running ?

    • @laurazarboni9647
      @laurazarboni9647 5 років тому

      There are always spots the robotic vacuum will miss. And pollen can pool up in spots, its better to manually remove that junk quick instead of running it through the filter just to be blown back out again.

      I have gone through 2 robotic cleaners For me they both broke a few months after warranty on a gunite pool. Plus they both were hard on my tiles due to a lousy tile job a few years back where there was a slight tile overhang on the bottom tiles edge. Anyway I now use a pool noodle and flippers and I go in the pool, get my exercise and clean while inside the pool. My pool is 40 years old and very large (20 by 40 ft but six sided) so it takes a while but it works for me.

    I have a cartridge hybrid DE filter that I use cellulose inside of it. The pool setup does not have a multiport valve so I dont have the option to vacuum to waste. When I do vaccum the pool when dirty after a FLOC treatment I can see the particles return back into the return line. Would a sock on the skimmer prevent the return? I have even tried removing the bung from the bottom of the filter and allowing the water to drain out but allot still makes it back into the pool.
