- “Mending Wall” is a poem by the American poet Robert Frost. It was published in 1914, as the first entry in Frost’s second book of poems, North of Boston. The poem is set in rural New England, where Frost lived at the time-and takes its impetus from the rhythms and rituals of life there. The poem describes how the speaker and a neighbor meet to rebuild a stone wall between their properties-a ritual repeated every spring. This ritual raises some important questions over the course of the poem, as the speaker considers the purpose of borders between people and the value of human work.

Complex piece of philosophy. We need barriers and at the same time we don't need them.
Aside from the underlying metaphorical meaning, I just enjoy the poem's nostalgic effect of going back to my rural youth and climbing over broken dry stone walls in abandoned pastures. It always made me wonder, who lived there and where did they go?
One of my favorite poems and this is the best reading I‘ve heard. The ingenuity of making the lines appear simple while the underlying metaphor resonates with us all…Frost again returns to nature and applies his touch of genius. Loved it. Thank you

Many of Frost's poems focus on the individual in society. I always likened "Mending Wall" to "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" in the distancing and masking of ones true identity that must take place in order to relate to others. Both poems bring this idea from the unconscious to the conscious mind of the narrator.

Its message is always evolving as I age each year.
Allegorically, Frost seems to be sitting on the fence regarding the necessity of walls.

I have a question about Frost's poem "Home Burial" if anyone understands it
Frost said, "When I wrote that poem only God and I knew the meaning - Now only god knows!"
For anybody that is curious about this quote, Frost probably didn't say it, and if he did, he stole the saying from somebody else
