  • “Annabel Lee” was written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1849. The popularity of the poem lies in the fact that it represents love in its most pure form.
    It was many and many a year ago,
    In a kingdom by the sea,
    That a maiden there lived whom you may know
    By the name of Annabel Lee;
    And this maiden she lived with no other thought
    Than to love and be loved by me.
    I was a child and she was a child,
    In this kingdom by the sea,
    But we loved with a love that was more than love-
    I and my Annabel Lee-
    With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven
    Coveted her and me.
    And this was the reason that, long ago,
    In this kingdom by the sea,
    A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
    My beautiful Annabel Lee;
    So that her highborn kinsmen came
    And bore her away from me,
    To shut her up in a sepulchre
    In this kingdom by the sea.
    The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
    Went envying her and me-
    Yes!-that was the reason (as all men know,
    In this kingdom by the sea)
    That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
    Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
    But our love it was stronger by far than the love
    Of those who were older than we-
    Of many far wiser than we-
    And neither the angels in Heaven above
    Nor the demons down under the sea
    Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
    Of my darling-my darling-my life and my bride,
    In her sepulchre there by the sea-
    In her tomb by the sounding sea.

      True ! - But Poe was also on the Boundary of Romantic (Gothic ) Literature,
      of Modern Chemical Science, so he was Fascinated by the newly
      Invented Science of Photography !
      He thought it the Greatest Invention Ever ! - He also followed William Herschel in his great researches into modern Astronomy and Cosmology
      (see Poe’s Famous Prose Poem “Eureka”)
      Famously, Charles Baudelaire and Nathaniel Hawthorne were both Strong
      Admirers of Poe , although i Never could Discover whether Poe had ever
      bothered to read Mary Shelley’s long classic Gothic novel: “Frankenstein” ❓🧟‍♂
      Undoubtedly Poe would Have HEARD of the 2nd (Signed) Edition - which
      was widely Popular - even in Then Pragmatic &. Uncultured America❗ 🇺🇸 ✌

    This is the very first Edgar Allen Poe poem I ever heard and read.
    I've been listening on repeat for several minutes, and I'm in tears. I feel such sadness, grief, and love.
    I had someone special, ever since I was a 5-year-old girl. His name was Nick. We were best friends since the very beginning, closest playmates at school. Ever since I discovered, Nick has fully supported my passion for writing. He was always by my side when the rest of the world wouldn't be. Little did I know, I had been in love with him for pretty much our entire lives. He was THE one for me. Over the years, our relationship grew from playmates, to best friends, to sweethearts. We really started having feelings in sixth grade, and after graduating 8th grade, we decided to start dating. We were very in love, but I was quite shy. Our relationship didn't last very long, though. Only after a year since we started dating, Nick suddenly passed away at only 15 years old. He had a heart attack in his sleepy due to a rare heart condition. The autopsy found that his heart was swollen. I've been in deep grief ever since, and it still hurts so much, despite the years. Despite the pain I go through every day, and what I've gone through ever since the tragic day of June 9, 2013, I remember the love Nick and I had and nurtured for the better through the years we spent together. Those years I spent....some of the very best times I can remember. He was always by my side, despite everything. He was there for me more than most of my ableist family. I'm autistic, and so was he. So, we simply just understood each other from the very beginning. I think about him, the memories we shared, and the love we had for each other and let grow, every single day. Even though it'll be 11 years this June, the pain tends to still feel fresh. I miss Nick every single day. I had dreams that I would be his bride, his one and only. We had even talked about it a few times, agreeing we would spend our lives together. There are many nights where I just lay in bed, thinking about him, thinking how I could've done better as his love, as his one and only. I feel some regret, but I know there's nothing more I can do. I just let myself feel the pain, cry the tears when I have to, and look back on the memories.
    I love you, Nick, and I miss you every day. 💔🥺

      Thank you for sharing. Sorry for your loss and I hope you can find love again. You sound like a lovely , passionate person and I hope life will be kinder in the future. Cherish the memories but please don’t let them consume your future. I was 19 five minutes ago, now I’m seventy-three.

      True love never dies, and it is a real thing, im sure Nick would want you to be happy. And live life to the fullest for him. It's sofa king hard, 2 not count the days, years, seasons since u last saw a loved 1. Supposedly it1's better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all. But tell that to Poe and the rest of us. =P

    Childhood is thinking this poem is weird because the narrator visits his love's grave every night.
    Adulthood is knowing what it means to love someone so deeply, so fiercely, that you'd rather crawl under the earth with them than go another day without them by your side.

    I recently went to Richmond, VA and stayed at Linden Row Inn, a very quaint Inn in downtown area where Poe lived all those years ago. They had Poe's complete works books spread out all over, along with a raven on every fireplace mantle. I immediately recalled a line of this poem when I asked the desk clerk what the cat's name was and she said Annabel. This presentation is awesome! I don't think I've read this poem in 40 years and this was a great way to hear it again. thx!

      Actually, what the poem explores is a man's dangerous obsession with the girl he once loved.

    This poem defines the adjective "haunting." Poe was the truest of dark geniuses.

    I recited this poem to the instrumental version of We Have All the Time In the World from the soundtrack of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service for a college project. It was scary how the music fits the poem. The professor and the class were speechless. It got me an A in the class.

    Annabel Lee - Edgar Allan Poe
    De demult s-a-ntîmplat, de demult…
    Era lângă-o mare cu ape-argintii,
    O fecioară trăia, şi poate c-o ştiţi,
    O fecioară, Annabel Lee ;
    Şi trăia doar c-un gând - s-o iubesc mereu,
    Şi trăia - să mă poată iubi.
    Eu - un copil - şi ea un copil,
    Lângă-o mare cu ape-argintii,
    Ne iubeam ca un cântec mai presus de iubire
    Ca un cântec - Annabel Lee ;
    Şi priveau, pizmuind preacurata iubire,
    Chiar serafii de sus, din tării.
    Şi aşa s-a-ntâmplat că-ntr-o zi, demult,
    Lângă marea cu ape-argintii
    Un vânt de pustiu s-a iscat dintr-un nor,
    îngheţând-o pe Annabel Lee ;
    Măritele-i neamuri au dus-o departe.
    Departe de mine, spre miazăzi,
    Şi-au închis-o în mormântul de piatră,
    Lângă-o mare cu ape-argintii.
    Chiar serafii, nicicînd fericiţi ca noi,
    Pizmuindu-ne priveau din tării -
    Da, aşa s-a-ntîmplat (şi cu toţii o ştiu
    Lângă marea cu ape-argintii)
    Că-ntr-o noapte un vânt se-abătu, geros,
    inghetând, ucigând pe Annabel Lee.
    Dar iubirea ne-a fost mai presus de iubirea
    Celor mai bătrâni decât noi, doi copii -
    Celor mai înţelepţi decât noi, doi copii -
    Şi nici îngerii de sus, din tării,
    Nici demonii din funduri de-ocean
    N-au să poată vreodată visul meu despărţi
    De-al frumoasei Annabel Lee.
    Şi, prin noapte, urcând, luna-mi pare un gând
    Al fecioarei Annabel Lee;
    Şi din ochii stelari eu văd ochii ei mari,
    Ai frumoasei Annabel Lee;
    Şi în fluxu-nnoptat lîngă ea stau culcat,
    Lângă draga, iubita, logodnica mea,
    în mormântul din ţărmuri pustii,
    Lângă ţărmuri cu valuri pustii.
    (trad. Mihu Dragomir)
