Will London Town and Back To The Egg get a release any time soon (or ever!?) - What about Press To Play, Off The Ground and Give My Regards To Broad Street? I ponder what might be happening but find I'm left with more questions than answers.

Im still confident that London Town & BTTE will be along soon. Paul does get involved in the re-mastering of these albums and the work has already been done on BTTE as I read an interview with him where the interviewer was with him in studio when he was working on it and Paul mentioned how he hadn't heard it for decades and gave a special mention to 'Arrow Through Me' which he referred to as being a 'great funky little tune' that he'd completely forgotten about. So I take from that , that he does need to be involved and therefore give these things his time and its not just left to his team to pull these things together. Don't forget even the artefacts that come with these things like hand written lyrics and photos come from his personal collection . The wait goes on but the Got Back tour programme alluded to 'watch out for forthcoming archive releases' so something is in the pipeline - its just when that is the big question.

Back To The Egg and London Town need to be out there with a decent remaster regardless of whether they are part of an Archive Collection as they are out of print. For all the bonus material out there Press To Play, Off The Ground, Chaos and Memory Almost Full should all have an Archive release.

Love this enthusiasm! I am not collector of these editions, but I can understand hoping for a full 70s set. My thinking is that he was focusing on the Get Back project, the wonderful Rick Rubin interviews, Glastonbury, and now Revolver. Could it be that the McCartney camp doesn't want to release anything near when a major Beatle release is happening?

I work in a record shop in Australia. I can say that just about everything is being delayed and held up at the moment, especially with vinyl with some artists releasing the CD version then the vinyl arrives 3 months later, but so many things are being pushed back on all formats. Part of it's down to the pandemic, that put production back a lot, then there's related issues with delivering things around the world. There's a backlog and they can't really rush anything out. My theory is that Paul's team probably has something ready to go but doesn't want to announce it until they know when it'll actually be available. I also don't think Paul would want to do a Pink Floyd and hold up the pressing plants so his oldies can get rereleased (this is a real issue with vinyl as they're often stuck producing more copies of Dark Side Of The Moon and other classic albums which means new artists have to wait even longer).
There's also the issue that previous archive collections have sat around unsold for long periods of time. The vinyl goes quick but the CD boxes are often still sitting around years later. Universal Music (and this is their standard practice for all unsold releases after a certain period of time) had actually ordered them to be sent back to their warehouse where they'd be destroyed. Luckily, a guy from the local McCartney fan club heard about it and ordered in all of the remaining copies before they were sent back. This isn't just Universal doing this, a lot of companies have similar policies, such as Gibson Guitars who got in trouble a few years ago for destroying an entire range of new guitars because they weren't selling as well as they'd have liked. So I'd say it's not on McCartney or his people but rather Universal Music who want to release something they know will sell and because these collections are more expensive, they tend to sit around a lot longer than the standard CD editions.
So that's basically where we're at. Manufacturing is held up still due to COVID and Universal probably don't care as much as they should.

  • @TheEeliciousOne
    @TheEeliciousOne Рік тому +3

Good questions all Andrew. I think that London Town and Back To The Egg would be really great. The biggest problem with these boxes has been that their prices have been moving higher and higher with each release and I think that they've not been selling as well. I love Flaming Pie, but I didn't bite for the deluxe box because it's so expensive (I did buy the vinyl release though). I remember RAM as being a positively reasonable box set price, but when Paul went back to Capitol the prices went astronomical.

man I hope the archive project isn't over yet, there's still so much ground to cover. Off The Ground has so many unreleased tracks and gems that deserve more attention. I've also been dying to hear proper hifi releases of Cage and Waterspout.
As for post-FP releases I could definitely picture a Chaos and Creation + Memory Almost Full release. Chaos has a ton of B-Sides and a live special that could be paired together-meanwhile Memory just really needs a remix, it's got the worst case of loudness war I've ever experienced.
I'd be bummed if the program is over, but it doesn't sound like there's anything planned at the moment.

Building on what some others have said, I wonder if Paul's mindset is something along the lines of, "I spent a great deal of time promoting Get Back, and have contributed to the Revolver Super Deluxe. So I have given the fans their fair share in regards to these box sets the past two years and don't need to rush anything else out." Add to this the diminishing returns of an Archive release in this economy and he may not be very motivated. That said I check your channel every day, Andrew, in hopes of seeing an announcement on the next McCartney box set. So here's hoping.

I was hoping earlier in the year that we’d see another archive or two, but the minute I saw that the Get Back Blu-ray was delayed I knew anything “Beatles” related would slow down.
I was actually very surprised to see Revolver get a 2022 release date. But that cemented it for me, no McCartney archive this year.
I think, seriously, that in 2023 we’ll see two Archive editions. And nearing the end of 2023 Rubber Soul. I know The Beatles and Paul projects are different, but scheduling wise, I think it matters. With wicked inflation, war, fuel shortages, things are pretty messed up. I can wait a few months.
Thanks for taking this matter up Andrew. Who knows, someone on Paul’s team might bring it up and they’ll make an announcement at least. ✌🏻

I was also quite convinced that 'London Town' and 'Back To The Egg' were on their way as archive collections and there was a lot of talk that they would be released this year. After all, how could they NOT be released?
Yes, Paul has been busy with 'McCartney III', 'Get Back', 'Glastonbury', being on tour and there are also rumours that we are getting 'McCartney III Vol. 2' or 'McCartney IV' out of the other tracks he recorded, but at the same time, it doesn't stop Paul reading an email or taking a phone call to give his OK on what might be included in the archives.
While I personally have no real interest in 'Broad Street', 'Press To Play' or 'Off The Ground' as to me they are probably Paul's weakest 3 albums, I would get them to complete the set. Nevertheless I hope SOMETHING happens soon!!

Who could forget water spout from the best unreleased song ever. I am also in agreement with give my regards to Broad Street and Press to Play. The vocal only version of Pretty Little Head on the 12 inch single and 45 RPM is one of the best ever completely underrated, singles & video because of this only vocal version versus the LP. BRTE is definitely the copy write issue that is dragging this & possibly what you mentioned about Paul’s atty’s passing with an unresolved issue…

Like you Andrew, I was half-expecting that we would get at least one Archive set during 2022 and that it would in all likelihood be London Town and/or Back to the Egg, possibly with an additional live album from the 1979 UK tour. But it has become increasingly unlikely as the year has rolled on. First we had the (quite pointless) McCartney box set, and then with the impending reissue of Revolver, the chances of an Archive release this year pretty much dried up. It is disappointing, but surely it wouldn’t make sense for the series not to at least cover the remainder of the 1970s. I would like to think something will happen in 2023. Ideally I would also like Archive sets of Press to Play and Off the Ground. It would be a shame if that doesn’t happen, since most of the other studio albums up to Flaming Pie have now been covered. The issue with that however, is that in all reality, Press to Play and Off the Ground are fairly obscure albums and are not universally popular. So, would Paul’s team see Archive sets of these albums as a commercially viable proposition? If not, then I would hope we’ll at least get something like an expanded 2 CD digipak set of them, including the remastered album and a bonus audio disc together with some new liner notes. We also have the 50th anniversary of Band On the Run to consider in 2023, which could throw another spanner in the works. There are many permutations!
And I’ve just realised this is a rather long comment, but that’s my take of Archive matters!

London Town and Back To The Egg are sorely missed. For London Town there must be some great home movies or photography from the Virgin Island recording sessions when Wings recorded on a makeshift recording "studio" on a boat, alongside two other boats for band and family to live in. (Other studios were also used, with Wings as both a quintet and a trio.) As for the music, I know I've heard quite a few bootlegged outtakes from this period. Also, and I'm sure I'm in the minority but I hear parallels between London Town and RAM. Maybe it's some of the fun voices Paul uses on both releases. There's something about the quirkiness of some of London Town that just reminds me of RAM. Sure, London Town is more AOR, but... well I said I'd be in the minority. London Town's "Morse Moose And The Grey Goose" could have been a RAM song. Also, "Backwards Traveller/Cuff Link" and "I'm Carrying" I could hear on RAM. "I'm Carrying" features "pseudo strings" that enter before the orchestra, played by Paul on a device called the Gizmotron, developed by video directors Godley and Creme. There must be some info and perhaps video regarding Paul's use of this guitar device. Also, there are quite a few great Denny Laine / Paul McCartney collaborations in this batch of songs. This was a high point for Denny. As far as Back To The Egg, my god, remaster the video of "Rockestra", get the lawyers to obtain sign-offs, and let's see this fantastic day at EMI/Abbey Rd. Studio, where the number of musicians is too huge to list (Bonham, Townshend, Gilmour, two Jones', etc., just to start). Remember, this was released on Columbia (in the USA), not Capital, so there would be lawyers working overtime. Besides the incredible "Rockestra" footage there were videos created for every song on Back To The Egg. Dust them off. And the Kampuchea concert. There's certainly enough material. Anyway, that's my two cents. I rate these two higher than Paul's team seems to give them.

  • @lucone2937
    @lucone2937 Рік тому

I agree that Paul McCartney probably doesn't have any particular interest to remaster and recall his later albums after "Flaming Pie" (1997). But albums like "London Town" (1978) and "Back to the Egg" (1979) might sound better after the new remastering, and they should be available some good bonus material to those albums too. It would also mean a proper ending to the whole Wings period, and it would fill the gap in the Archive Collection.
One obvious reason for these delays in the Archive Collection might be that in recent years McCartney has probably preferred various Beatles projects (e.g. Get Back sessions and Revolver album). Hopefully Macca's 2023 calendar is finally open for last two Wings albums.

The long tail on the Archive Collection series is huge problem for sales, I think. The fan-favorite heavy hitters like Band on the Run, RAM, Wings Over America were ages ago, and for anyone who is trying to start collecting these now it's an expensive and frustrating proposition. Completists will want London Town and BTTE, but the number of people who are going to want to start collecting this series at the tail end with the less acclaimed albums is bound to be greatly diminished.
Meanwhile, the set I really really want -- Chaos and Creation -- is never going to happen.

You said something about something going awfully wrong with Heather which caught my interest so I was wondering about that. But I think it’s odd that at the start of this year many websites such as SuperDeluxeEdition addressed the Archive Collection & CONFIRMED (according to them) that indeed BTTE & LT were coming this year. Just shows we all get the same info & can be wrong. Yes I’d surely would like both of these sets if nothing else to close out the 70’s. Other other set I “may” buy is “Chaos & Creation in the Backyard” if that ever does come out. I’m not sure about much else. Not interested in OTG or PTP in the least.

The Archive Collection are getting more expensive from release to release, so "FLAMING PIE" a wonderful Album, the Archive Collection is still available for 279,-- € (the highest price ever) For example I get Pink Floyd "ANIMALS for 65,--€, Queen - The Miracle for 149,--, CCR AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL 1970 for 99,--€, Cliff Richard's new Christmas Album Deluxe for 50,-- €, David Bowie Live Collection for 99,--€. So Paul tries to get at the end his second billion, but his fans haven't got so much money and interest anymore to pay such exclusive price, much higher as every Beatles Deluxe Release. And every Beatles Album made history for ever.

Hi Andrew. Possibly the reason Macca has NOT announced any new Special Editions follows the many, many different vinyl editions of McCartney III the other year which probably required second mortgages for serious collectors ! Also, as you say, we've had a John Lennon/George Harrison/Beatles Special editions as well released and none of them are cheap so maybe I'm amazed that Macca has taken note of our rapidly shrinking wallets, perhaps ? Just watched your Ranking video as well and, interestingly, Revolver was the first Beatles album I bought back in 1974 (I had been listening intently to "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (But Goldies)" since January 1974 as my parents owned a copy). I must confess I don't rank anymore but Revolver is and always has been my favourite album of all time ! Cheers

i thought your take on 'Back to the Egg' when you were ranking McCartney (and Wings) albums was very good. As an album, it is probably my second favorite whole Wings album behind 'Band on the Run'. However, while it has its own stand-out tracks, there really aren't any "stand out" tracks and IF it is supposed to be a concept album (I think it's not an aspirational concept album as much as a trick Paul is kind of trying to pull, as he did with Ram), what is the concept? However, I love the cover art. I held off on getting BttE for a long, long time because I'd heard bad things, but once I got it, again, 2nd best Wings album for me, as a whole. 'London Town', on the other hand, doesn't really do anything for me, as with the album before it. Great hits throughout that whole period from Paul, as ever, though. Cheers on another great video.

Some other reasons than the ones you have mentioned, during the last 5 years we have seen The Beatles box sets, 3 John box sets and of course All Things Must Pass. Not only that we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis and a huge rise in energy prices which will have a big impact on younger fans and also on businesses like the music industry. I think we just need to be a bit patient at this particular time.

Fantastic video with lots to think of. I haven’t been buying the deluxe archives But have been enjoying the excitement when they have been released. I too have been wondering up to what album/ time period will they go and release to as you said and you are right the album reissued a few years ago are at this point random even the 4 “live” albums (the Russian album I still do not look at as a live album ) were released but WHY,???WHAT HAS been going on behind the scenes I do wonder. as far as more archive releases there was a mention of more to come in Pauls most recent tour program so I guess Time will tell but to which one we will get next is my guess.

I wonder if that has anything to do with it tbh, maybe a little
I honestly just want Memory Almost Full and Driving Rain repressings tbh. I don’t even want archive collections for those, I don’t even want Paul to relive those times for the sake of his own well being, just general repressings so I don’t have to pay $100-$200 for them.

Thanks Kindly Andy! Here are my predictions and I am not expecting for anything to materialize. For next year 2023: 1. Please Please Me 1963 Album remixed and de luxed with extra bonus outtakes on CD 2 2. With The Beatles 2 CD Set same thing done by Giles Martin with second Disc as Outtakes Solo Releases: 1. John Lennon = Mind Games remixed and upgraded liner notes 2 Cd Deluxe set supervised by Sean Lennon 2. Paul McCartney = Band on the Run (3 CD set with Outtakes and bonus tracks, supervised by Paul- Anniversary Edition, please note that as of today, Band on the Run is Out of Print with only a few copies available through Amazon. 3. George Harrison = Living in the Material World { 2 CD Deluxe edition remixed by Sam O' Kell , supervised by Dhani Harrison with new liner notes, Bonus Songs } etc........ 4. Ringo Starr = RINGO ( Double CD set remixed with new personnel lists, new liner notes plus Bonus Numbers. No longer expecting " London Town " and "Back to the Egg " because I guess Paul is on Holiday after the early Tours this year He might start work on March 2023 again, it's just speculation. What frustrates me is Capitol refusing to release " Love Songs " Double album from The Beatles ( 1977 ) this in fact would fit Valentines Day on February. I am aware that Universal Records has Cost reductions for Reissue projects but remember any Beatles repackaged album concept sells. Take care Andrew and Happy Christmas!

I would hope that Paul and Co. would at least release in the Archive Collection everything that had shown up in the Paul McCartney Collection. Not just the 4 albums, but the bonus tracks as well: “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reggae”, “We All Stand Together”, “Simple As That”, “Spies Like Us”, “Once Upon A Long Ago (Long Version)”, and the mixes of “No More Lonely Nights”. I feel that everything else is bonus cake. (I’ll take the cake, for sure, but at least put out the remasters of what has already been issued.)
At this point, I would figure Paul should put out a statement (via himself or through MPL) about what he feels the future of this series. He knows many fans around the world will buy whatever is released, but we need to know if we should put the money aside sooner than later.

As you know , from McCartney - wings at the speed of sound ( all studio Albums ) have all been released as archive collections so it would be odd not to include theses last two albums of the 70’s , I hope what I have put makes sense to you. ?

I dont think we'll ever see an Archive collection of Off the Ground. That should have been boxed in with Flowers in the Dirt. I also dont think we'll see anything done with the 90s live albums or Unplugged. I am like you, hopeful to see Press to Play and Broadstreet, but I think Paul sees those as his own personal Magical Mystery Tour period. Broadstreet was bashed by critics in the same way and from what I remember, Press to Play consisted of HUGE fights between him and Hugh Padgham and Eric Stewart. So honestly, London Town and Back to the Egg may be it.
I would LOVE to see him do a Archive Collection of Tripping the Live, Paul is Live, Unplugged, Back in the USSR and Run Devil Run. Call it "Cold Cuts" and add in some treats like unreleased covers(for Back in the USSR and Run Devil) and put together a proper end to end Paul Concert album using tracks from Tripping, Paul is Live, Unplugged and anything not released. Hell just call the Archive "Paul is Live in the 90s" !
You think he should stop at Flaming Pie. I think he should at LEAST end it with Chaos and Creation and Memory Almost Full. I think those two marked the return to form. As good as New and Egypt Station are, its felt like after Memory Almost Full, Paul has decided to take the McCartney album approach now to all his future records. Records what he feels like when he feels like and when he has enough material, drop an album. So I honestly wonder how much "Extra" material there is anymore. Memory feels and sounds like something he conceived end to end. I suspect there are extra tracks for that and Creation we have not heard.
Of course, he may decide London Town and Back to the Egg dont pass muster either. Wings was falling apart. So he may view those as down periods also. He really seems to not want to put any effort into things made during periods he was being creatively maligned or that dont have positive memories. Similar to Driving Rain.

In addition to badly-needed Archive reissues of BTTE and LT, there's SO MUCH other McCartney stuff that could use even a standalone reissue, as a few his albums received about 4 or 5 years ago ("Chaos & Creation", The Russian album, "Thrillington", "Paul is Live", plus all or most of the albums that had already been "Archived", so to speak.): "Memory Almost Full", "Driving Rain", "Run Devil Run", "Off the ground", "Unplugged", "Press to play", "Tripping The Live Fantastic" and so forth. Heck, it'd be nice to see a new compilation of one-off tracks he may have contributed films or other special projects (i.e., "I want to come home", "In the blink of an eye", "Hope for the future", etc.) as well as one-off collaborations with other artists. Oh, and while I'm on a roll, there's also his classical output that could SORELY stand to be reissued as well: "Liverpool Oratorio", "Standing Stone", "Working Classical", "A Garland for Linda", "Ecce Cor Meum" and "Ocean's Kingdom". To the best of my knowledge, each and every one of those titles are LONG out of print even on CD and therefore quite hard to find; Some of these have never even seen a vinyl release, for that matter. Not forgetting "Liverpool Sound Collage" or "Twin Freaks", along with his three Fireman albums, ALL of which too deserve reissue and/or first-time vinyl release. I could go on and on, but I think I've just about covered all the bases here. Thank you for your time, Andrew, as well as for posting another great video!
