Maybe just do a 20 track best of John, best of Paul etc and then slot them all in - that way you will still have time to have an actual life away from UA-cam as we know how much time and effort you put into your excellent videos.

@@JanisJoseph 20 each - so a 100! 1 for each Solo and 1 for the Beatles! (ok maybe 40-60 for Beatles)

    Hi Andrew,
Just watched the final episode in the rankings videos, what an effort, so well done, it's been great entertainment. Just one small criticism....you should have included Live at the Hollywood Bowl as it is an official Beatles album, so a bit unfair to miss it out, especially as live albums were included in the solo rankings, but seriously, thankyou for doing this , and keep up the fantastic work.
    Steve.

Wow….What an effort! Hats off Andrew! I can’t really disagree (much) with your rankings. (Not that that matters anyway, it’s just great to hear you chatting about them). Great series, which has made me go and dig out some rarely played albums for an appraisal or reappraisal 😊

"I've Got A Feeling" is one of the best tracks on "Let It Be" as well as "One After 909" and "Get Back".

  • @stationminute
    @stationminute Рік тому +3

It's been a journey, Andrew, and I've enjoyed following along every minute! Like you, my estimation of Let It Be has certainly gone up in recent years due to the box set and the Get Back documentary. But what really put it up there for me was Paul "reuniting" with John on I've Got a Feeling on the Got Back tour and at Glastonbury. It's a testament to the phenomenal, ageless chemistry John and Paul had, and the Let It Be album is steeped in it.
And FWIW, I love Hold Me Tight! It's an absolute all-out rocker that threatens to burst apart at the seams at any moment, but the Beatles hold it all together through sheer will and talent.

Fantastic video, I can tell you put a lot of thought and time into this! Could not have been easy. Can’t argue with any of it except Magical Mystery Tour, great songs on that album and I really enjoy (personal opinion, like yours is as well). Glad Wings Over America made top 20. I’m partial to that one because I was at the first show of the tour in Fort Worth, Texas. Plus it’s a really enjoyable listen. Great job, Andrew!

That was a sterling effort, man. And, for what it's worth, I heartily agree with most of your decisions. I also respect the love for the underrated 'Beatles For Sale,' although I'd have put it slightly above the more popular 'With The Beatles.' I also respect the love for 'Flaming Pie,' which had been his best collection of songs for almost twenty years. Now have a well-deserved lie down . . .

Watched it and I'm so impressed with your methodical approach. I love list-making too and the pleasure of watching your effort was enormous.
An interesting thought about the vocal harmonies on Beatles For Sale. Vocal harmonies have always been my favourite aspect of rock music and I love analysing them. Definitely the arrangements of the harmonies on that album are really inventive and surpassing the Merseybeat average, but did you notice how George's voice is missing there? Yes, he only sings backing vocals on What Youre Doing and Hey Hey Hey Hey (the response vocals feature the only three-part harmony on this album!) plus obviously the lead on the album closer.
    My Beatles ranking:
    1-2. Revolver
    1-2. Abbey Road
(the winner changes from day to day - "Revolver" was also the first cassette I bought in 1988)
    3. Magical Mystery Tour
    4. White Album
    5. Rubber Soul
    6. Sgt. Pepper
    7. Beatles For Sale
    8. With the Beatles
    9. Help!
    10. Yellow Submarine (I know (I know)...)
    11. Please Please Me
    12. A Hard Day's Night (the only Beatles album I find overrated)
    13. Let It Be (the only Beatles album I can say I partially dislike, though it was great to see the love for One After 909 in your video)
It was also most interesting to see how particular solo albums dented into your Beatles ranking. My favourite solo album will probably be Chaos & Creation, but I would put it as - relatively - low as #7, that's how strong my Beatles Top6 is.
As I mentioned in the other comment, The Beatles were my first musical love. I don't think there is any other group I would have such detailed knowledge of the songs and facts. Still, at the age of 48 I find myself drifting further and further from their music. Last year I compiled a list of My 100 Favourite Songs (it's one of the playlists on my channel). The following Beatles & solo tracks made it:
    #98. Long-Haired Lady
#91. At the Mercy (or some other track from Chaos, I compiled the list with albums in mind too)
#53. And Your Bird Can Sing
    #36. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
    #11. Help! (live version)
    #10. the Abbey Road medley
This was a list with strong personal theme, not necessarily reflecting my rank of individual Beatles songs (of which She Said She Said would definitely beat And Your Bird Can Sing), but these lists change so fast, which is another excuse to make another one :)
    Gerard

Interesting to note that 'Rubber Soul' is known to have greatly influenced Brian Wilson's 'Pet Sounds'. However, it recently dawned on me that the version of 'Rubber Soul' that Wilson was listening to was the U.S. Capitol version of 'Rubber Soul' which has a different track listing than the one we're used to in the UK. The US version is a little more ballardy than the UK. Worth a listen.

    Abbey Road
    Plastic Ono Band
    Band on the Run
    All Things Must Pass
    And one of Ringo's albums...
If you ask me, however, I'd rank these ones as the best instead:

Andrew, The Beatles Historian Mark Lewisohn was talking about their first 4 albums and he said he played the first 3 a lot. The 4th not so much. But over the years Beatles For Sale has grown on him more and more. So these day's if he decides to play one of the early ones. More often than not it will be Beatles for Sale. He said he's sad that it a does'nt get the respect it deserves because it's just a great record. "It's a great time capsule, from covers from their Hamburg day's right upto new songs for the L.P." Cheers, Chris Perry.

Very awesome and impressive list. You’re a better man than me being able to put this together. I could never do it. My one complaint is However. Since you included the live albums of the solo career Beatles, why not include Live at the BBC, On Air Live at the BBC Vol 2, and Live at the Hollywood Bowl for the Beatles? Just three more to throw in. Plus all the unique material on the BBC albums not included on the studio albums. I’d be interested where these fall on your list.

I always enjoy watching your videos and listening to your views Andrew and I have enjoyed this one. For me ranking The Beatles albums is an impossible task as each album was a step forwards up till Revolver and even then each album was different from the last. It's incredible to think any band could record an album like Please Please Me then 6 years later Abbey Road. What a fantastic achievement!
As for comparing albums by any band or artist from the 60's with their 70's output, it simply can't be done in my opinion unless you are just talking about songs. I could go on and on with this subject and it would be pointless as we all have our own views. Well done for completing this task Andrew and I look forward to your future videos.

Agree on Pepper being number 1. I'd have Ram at number 2. I'm not such a ATMP fan due mostly to how many skips I do on that album. It's not even my top 5 George album. I do think some of those other George albums are a bit low for me. But all different tastes. My biggest hot take though would probably be Egypt Station. That's top 10 for me out of all albums. I think its a phenomenal record. And Brainwashed would be high also for me. Really enjoyed your video

Fun video series, hats off to you for compiling it. But I think you shortchanged a few of George’s better solo albums. Material World and Cloud Nine in particular. Your love of solo Paul is fine with me, but how can Wild Life top Cloud Nine? And Concert for Bangladesh ranks well below several Macca B-tier live sets? Oh well at least one George album got its due!

That was a fun list. Quite the project. I question any solo Beatle album ranking over Magical Mystery Tour. Do the songs on McCartney really outshine MMT? You rank John's solo career way higher than I do. I certainly agree with your points about Plastic On Band. It's a great artistic statement, but not always an enjoyable listen. I bought the deluxe box set of it and I have to admit that I still haven't listened to all of it. It started to depress me and I shelved it. For me McCartney has had the best post Beatles career by a country mile.

Entertaining to watch the whole ranking series from start to finish. Great work! I would love to see a separate ranking of the Beatles singles. So many people rank the albums on UA-cam, but I've seen very few rank the singles... which is a little sad, because the singles were such a huge part of their legacy. You could just stick to the 22 original UK singles from 1962-1970. Or you could expand into the post-breakup and solo singles too, though it might be best to have a cutoff at the end of the 70s or 80s, since singles weren't as critical once CDs took over.

4:50 That opening HDN chord...there's the composition of it, and then there's the effect of it. It's hard to define the magic of that opening - - but music writers, of the type that are getting commissioned by Apple for these superdeluxe books, should be gifted enough in description and analysis to fathom and refine it. But writers don;t have the ambition of the price Apple is charging. Money for old rope. The sheer full stop of it - - starting the first song on the album in mid-air with a chord that punctuates the end of something and then lapses into silence. It's not the same showstopper opening of 'Help' that is clearly leading somewhere: 'Help' does sound like we skipped an intro and dived straight into the urgency of an SOS. And Lulu tells a great story you must hear about her group pulling over on an A-road when 'Help' was scheduled to be aired for the first time on the radio and how mindblown she was by that opening right out the gate...
But HDN opening is even better - - whatever pop music was before that chord is now something else, another speed, another worldview, a bigger high, another mindset even 2 years before LSD. More revolutionary than 'I Feel Fine' amp feedback, more radical than any opening chord on Pepper, and more dramatic than the concluding crescendo chord on the end of 'A Day In the Life', it draws a line in the sand. That was then, and this is now. It's a Happening, that chord.

I also think it would have been a good gag worth doing, and very courageous, to climax the video with the inclusion of a Yoko Ono album, and sincerely placing that at #1 above Pepper and any Beatles album....and then watch it all kick off in the comments.

Here are my rankings for all time favorite Beatles albums go when I’m doing my ranking is I will rank them based on how many tracks there are the last songs that gets the bottom it goes on the list the more songs it goes higher it’s on my list. what do you think about the yellow submarine Songtrack if you had to read your favorite compilation albums where would they be ranked as in what number?
If you have some Beatles compilation album you should rank them also on campus enjoyment as well because there are some great ones out there. I will be ranking the compilation albums as well but I’m going to rank the Beatles main studio album.
Number 13 on my list is going to be yellow submarine it’s a really good album even though I enjoy it but one side is the Beatles the other half is the George Martin Orchestra I do like the yellow submarine soundtrack album,But I’ll put it at number 13’s place because of the fact that there’s no Beatles on the second side and interestingly enough Ringo Starr said that the yellow submarine album is not like a proper actual album but the four songs are fantastic the highlights for me, would be a bulldog only in Northern song and it’s all too much
I love a bulldog with a great piano rift in trouble it’s fantastic.
Then I’m going with only Northern song which has some troublesome recording history and I think because of there’s a lot of experimental avant-garde stuff going on trying to reproduce in stereo was probably impossible but on the yellow submarine song track it’s a great remix the whole remix is fantastic. Number 12 is going to be let it be it’s a really good album but I find it puzzling, why the song don’t let me down was not included on the album it would be a great album. What brings this album kind of down for me, is there’s no longer version of the song dig it and I find it interesting that the Beatles didn’t finish the song Maggie May cause I would’ve loved to of heard more of that to see what I could’ve done with it I am a huge huge Phil Spector fan I always have been and I always will be and I love what he did with the let it be album is a really good album although it’s interesting that he used the studio version but at the end you get to hear the live performance where John Lennon says i’d like to thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we pass the audition it’s too bad that Phil Spector didn’t actually use the live version of get back like he did with I’ve got a feeling in one after 909. I do love the let it be naked that’s a great album.

  • @Bootlegger1892
    @Bootlegger1892 Рік тому

First up I have joined this ranking party right at the end. So may I commend you on such a brave undertaking and of course these things are entirely subjective.Yes there are things I disagree with (hold me tight, not a second time) and plenty to concur with of course. So rather than be just positive I thought I should be super positive and really focus in on your assessment of The Beatles (the White album).
We differ here only in so much as not only is the White album my favourite Beatles record but possibly for me the greatest album ever made sharing a pedestal with such works as Exile on Main Street and Blonde on Blonde. This probably reveals my obsession with the double album as a perfect space for an artist to let go and unleash every facet of their musical identity in one place.
Of course I’m always half expecting people to start banging on about what a great single album this would have made! Not a single second is wasted on this record, a work of the most towering genius. Your own comment regarding the desert island aligns with my view that I have always held that the White album is a compilation of musical styles.
Finally may I zoom in on something you said that I’ve only ever heard myself thinking or saying. This being the darkness, incredible spooky darkness of side 4. I think of double albums in much the way a gardener thinks when designing a garden, they build rooms. And for me the perfect double album usually consists of four rooms which the White album completely adheres to. This darkness just progresses and grows on side 4 into a work of sheer beautiful sequencing genius. To such a point that my 13-year-old self whom perceived Good Night as a final lightening of mood I am now at odds with. Meaning is in the mind of the listener and over the years I have come to perceive Good Night following on as it does from the nightmarish musique concrete genius of Revolution 9 as a Victorianesque tune about dying children or adults. This of course was not what Lennon had in mind when he wrote it (yes it’s a give-it-to-Ringo childrens lullaby) but perfectly demonstrates how context can alter mood and perception.
Congratulations on this rather tough and perhaps, dare I say, foolish undertaking😂, I honestly think I would be stuck from number two onwards in terms of trying to order these revolutionary works.
Finally I also concur with you that Plastic Ono Band, Ram and All Things Must Pass are these artists greatest works, the latter being for me the greatest Beatles solo album.
