the continued medical rape of scully's character aside (ugh), i do have to say that the abduction arc in season 2 is one of my favorites in the whole series and the moment when i fully understood the hype of the show. you have this life and death conspiracy, sure, but at the heart of it are just two people who would do anything for each other, even that early on in the series. that scene where mulder loses it in the hospital in "one breath" is one of my favorites in the entire series and david duchovny's best work on the show. and then when he confronts csm, when melissa urges mulder be there for scully and tell her how he feels, when scully wakes up and reveals she could hear him the whole time...just excellent stuff.
Totally agree. Every word! Everytime Mulder loses it because Scully is hurt in some ways always becomes one of my favorite moments. Gosh I love this show ❤️

Basically, CSM is more realistic rendition of Darth Vader. Talented, skilled, intelligent and sensitive guy turned into monster due to circumstances. Like Anakin Skywalker.
Random Trivia: The actor who plays Cigarette Smoking Man was actually hired to be just an extra with no lines, you can see him in the very first episode where him and Dana exchange a strange look. From that scene alone, they asked for him to come back and wrote him into the story. It was meant to be.
