- Mary Latimer is a former Designated Pilot Examiner and in this video aims to give an idea of how the ground portion of a checkride will likely flow. No two checkrides are the same, but in general they are to the same standards set by the ACS. www.girlsinflight.org
I love this lady: “if you don’t know what a hold short line is, we might be done” lmao
i'm a private pilot and this is the most realistic 'Mock Checkride' on youtube. This was almost exactly what mine was like. But with a little more emphasis on systems. 10/10 Will be sending this video to my friends who are student pilots.
Yes, this was a great video.. reminds me of my private checkride 13 years ago, almost to the tee
A lot of the other video seem like robots so it has always been a little concerning.
1. Clouds reported in AGL.
2. VFR cruising altitude only applies above 3000 ft AGL.
Made me cringe how long they stayed on this topic when she obviously didn’t know the answer this is a mock checkride should just say the answer is actually this and move on
Basic VFR questions, almost falls into the same category as like knowing what a hold short line is.
@@Deanjacob7thank you for this comment. Let’s me know how basic knowledge this is for airmen 👍🏽
@@kimberlywentworth9160just got my airmen knowledge book so I will definitely make sure I know basic info like this 👍🏽💯
This is one of two best Checkride I’ve seen on UA-cam
After 100s of hours of study videos, this is one of the best!
Why thank you for the comment, hopefully you will share this link with others also!
Got them I’ll continue to watch
Don’t talk more than needed to answer the question unless you want to dig a hole for yourself.
Seriously. Lots of talking here
She offered a lot of information lol.
I think thats the point of this video to cover as much ground as possible so that viewers can prepare for the oral exam. They are just doing it in the form of mock exam.
Rajiv Sharma yeah reminds me of my stage checks. Doing my final one in two days. Then on to checkride assuming all goes well
Oral exam has to be the most nerve wracking and where most people freeze up
I was almost yelling to the screen ' Below 3000 it doesn't matter, That's what shes asking" LOL
Dude same!!!!
Haha. Me too! This was seriously a fun watch.
Getting road rage as we speak bc of this😂
Time stamp?
@@renemedinajr4218 22:00
one of the best checkride oral videos I have seen. most videos just show the candidate getting every question correct and not showing how the DPE responds to incorrect questions. well done!
Im lucky for coming across this video. Im so nervous for my checkride. Great video
Samsies
Did u pass
How u did?
If you aren’t nervous and think you’re prepared you’ll probably fail. I’d imagine you passed!
@@matthewbrock9073 t
Excellent DPE. I love how she brings the questions to reality and puts them into real life situations. I've got my checkride coming late this month and this really helps. 👍
Caleb how did you do? How close was this to the actual Checkride?
So? Did you pass?
OUTSTANDING video, can’t wait to see the continuation !
Thank you for the time and effort you’ve put into this video.
Thank you!
I wouldnt be flying after drinking that 1000oz soda hahah :)
Thanks for doing this video. I've been flying GA for almost 50 years. I clicked on the video thinking I would watch a few minutes and move on to something else. I stayed to the very end. Nicely done on the ex-examiner's part and the student's part. I've got a flight review coming up in a few months. This was a good rehearsal. Thanks.
Hope the refresher is a bit easier than a regular checkride, but thank you for the compliment!
Super helpful video. Thank you so much for posting it. I am taking my check ride in 3 weeks and am super nervous. This helps a lot.
*awesome video!! Both ladies did great, this video is a great overall review/refresher. Thanks for the upload.*
Thank you so much! I felt not ready at all, but after watching this I realized I could answer most of the questions, and I knew what I needed to study. You lifted a lot of stress off of me before my checkride!
This video really helped me prepare for my checkride last year; this video is the most accurate I’ve seen. It’s really just a conversation, and as long as you’ve gone over your missed questions from the written you’ll be fine.
I’ve watched a few mock checkride videos. This is the most helpful as it was the most real. The others I’ve seen talk more about the checkride than actually mocking a checkride.
Ladies, thank you very much for doing this! Very well done and very helpful.
I take my check ride soon this helps a lot for me to understand what I’m up against, thank you!
Super helpful for a student pilot ! Thank you !
This video was great and a good representation of how my check ride was like.
Say "Calendar Months" rather than years since that is actually what it is based on and it is the FAA language used in the FAR.
Best mock check video I’ve seen in UA-cam. It was very helpful for me to review my knowledge. Thank you 🙏 hope to see more videos from you guys!
Glad it was helpful!
The big take away from this interview for me was to not talk to much
Thank you for this. Student pilot prepping for private check ride. This was a gift to the student community.
Thank you for doing this and your time.
I wish I took my checkrides with Mary, she seems to keep you at ease and throws funny side comments here and there. DPEs that make checkrides fun instead of stressful are gifts from heaven.
Just took my checkride and this helped me out tremendously
Fantastic video, one of the best mock checkrides on UA-cam
Maybe she was clicking the pen to try and distract the student to see if she can handle the situation
Thank you for sharing this!
AWESOME video thank you for sharing I got my Private Pilot check ride coming up.. very helpful
Me too!! Good luck you got this!
Good interview. I now see the general format of topics
Thank you, as valuable now, in 2021 as it was the day you put it on UA-cam. My oral and check ride is coming up soon, with a DPE.
Me tooooo
Very informative video .. Thanks for sharing!
Awe I love Mary. Don’t think she remembers me but I had a nice phone call with her. Such a gift to the aviation community.
Thanks for the upload, this really helped! Don't talk too much but wait for visual cues from the DPE, if you are talking and explaining and he is satisfied they will move onto the next prompt when you pause, if you pause and the DPE is looking at you being silent or nudging you on to keep talking that means you may have missed a topic from a list. If the DPE ask you the same question again but phrases it different, they want you to re-explain your previous answer because it was either INCORRECT or poorly explained so don't say the same answer! Good luck fellow aviators!
Very helpful. Thank you for sharing
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Absolutely awesome! It's great to watch a video where the student doesn't know all of the answers right off the bat. Got my checkride coming up soon and watching videos like these really help me feel prepared.
@BLKCFII Yep, on December 6th 2019! I haven't looked back!
Getting ready to take my check ride soon.
Very good, and very realistic 'Mock Checkride'.
Checkride is tomorrow, was stressing hardcore until I found this video!
6:00 its important to know that the answer you should be giving should be in calendar months, the flight school I went to emphasized on that a lot.
Great video! Thanks a lot!
Really good mock check ride, my suggestion is to make a second one with different questions and a debriefing at the end, reviewing the points the student didn't quite get right.
Thank you for this!
Best mock check ride I’ve seen!!
Above 3000 ft AGL - “west is best” so fly even thousand plus 500 ft when on a westerly heading (Example 4,500)
If you’re on an easterly heading, fly odd thousand plus 500 ft
(Example 5,500)
“East is ODD, and West is EVEN odder”
"I can't leave anything behind" "I can leave you behind" 😂😂😭😭 but for real very good PIC decision and had me laughing too. Well done!!
GIFT... what a clever acronym! so cool
Great video!
This is very helpful, as I have a mock checkride tomorrow and a mock oral to schedule soon after (I'm on the list for an actual checkride but not yet scheduled)!
If possible, I suggest adding "Oral" or "Oral Exam" to the title of the video, to make it clear that it's not about the check RIDE itself.
Thanks!!
I didn’t like the answer that she gave with the *L equating that it’s pilot controlled lighting. It’s technically wrong. It says on the sectionals “Lighting Limitations Exist, refer to Chart Supplemental”. Yes, 9 out of 10 times, it’ll be pilot controlled lighting, but there’s that one airport to where you have to make an arrangement to have the lights on with the airport management. Imagine your surprise (and that sinking feeling) when you don’t check and you’re clicking frantically on the mic and the lights aren’t coming on.
Wow, I'm training out of Tyler lol! I can see why all the training tells you to "just answer the question quickly and specifically" because this was kind of brutal to sit through and see the shovel digging. I will say this video gave me tons more confidence in my personal readiness for my checkride in a few weeks. Thanks!
How’d you do
PPL passed on June 1 2022! Revisiting this after moving by Houston and having a flying gap of a few months. I joined a club here and I start flying an Archer III (trained in a 172N) this week! Back to family day trips soon!
Yeah she's very verbose. I'd keep it short and simple. To me, I felt like the DPE was sometimes getting tired of her lengthy answers.
In the Chicago area in Class E airspace while on VFR Flight Following, ATC has given me headings to fly when they want space for IFR traffic near a Class C or Class D airport. I was probably near their active runway extended centerline.
Thanks so much!
Check ride in 2 days. I'm going nutts!
I passed with flying colors! (Pun intended)
Congrats! Mines coming up in a few weeks. I feel very strong on the oral. Just brushing up on these videos daily to keep myself ready!
@@AMoose454 good luck! You'll be fine.
Thank you for sharing, This is a very realistic video and is very helpful. I have a check ride coming up soon and I've been watching a lot of videos and this is one of the best.
I love that this student wasn’t perfect, and made it very realistic. Good job!
I’m taking my checkride soon!
Tyler , how did it go?
You Rock!!!
I love that teaching question:
DPE: what is the field elevation?
Student: 600ft
DPE: okay, so how would 400 ft clouds be reported?
200 feet below the airport. Ha ha. 😜
I too was scrolling along and was just browsing and thought I might watch a few minutes of this. I watched it all as well as a good refresher. It even made me pull the book out and look stuff up! lol As pilots after many years of flying off and on (in my case) I think we forget more than we remembered back in the day for the check ride! ........... However .... I am puzzled at one little point though, at 22:03 she mentions Flight following and the Examiner mentions ATC is not going to give you an assigned heading or altitude with FF unless in the Bravo. I was coming back from a cross country the other day from the east Texas area into an airport south of DFW. We were not in the Bravo. ATC was giving us assigned headings and altitude changes. They were lowering us in stages, and at one time told us to fly direct to Lancaster then to destination. They were stepping us down and around to remain clear of the bravo. Sometimes they clear you through, sometimes they don't. But I find that Flight Following (ATC) will give you assignments which is contradictory to what she said at 22:24 in the video where she says they don't.
She did mention "when" would it be a legal requirement....
§ 91.159 VFR cruising altitude or flight level.
Except while holding in a holding pattern of 2 minutes or less, or while turning, each person operating an aircraft under VFR in level CRUISING FLIGHT MORE THAN 3,000 feet above the surface SHALL MAINTAIN the appropriate altitude or flight level prescribed below, unless otherwise authorized by ATC:
(a) When operating below 18,000 feet MSL and -
(1) On a magnetic course of zero degrees through 179 degrees, any odd thousand foot MSL altitude + 500 feet (such as 3,500, 5,500, or 7,500); or
(2) On a magnetic course of 180 degrees through 359 degrees, any even thousand foot MSL altitude + 500 feet (such as 4,500, 6,500, or 8,500).
This is good stuff. I'm really glad I watched this video it made me explore answers.. She had good probing questions ...
I get this when I am also flying near the Bravo and or around it, because its more of the regional approach keeping everyone safe, but outside of that Flight Following does not assign altitudes or headings, but do suggest for avoidances of traffic and airspace, but even in the Bravo area may also noted they suggested the altitude at or above or below usually not a set in stone altitude. but recently I noticed an uptick in ATC providing more services than used to now not as busy as were.
but in general they are correct that flight following does not assign, but often suggests
Tamara Griffith we we’re told to fly a heading, “Descend maintain“ etc. but I do understand that it is primarily for traffic advisories.
I really liked Mary's demeanor. Calm. Willing to work with the candidate. I just wish the candidate didn't finish so many of Mary's sentences. When I take my exam (as soon as C-19 allows), I'll try extra hard not to finish the DPE's sentences.
Jeff this is the most realistic video i've ever seen on UA-cam of a checkride. This was very similar to mine.
@@drewleevy5420 that's good toi hear! I'm excited to finally take my checkride and move on with my flying life.
Is there a point where you, the student, can take the pen from the examiner?
The clicking would drive me nuts!!
I’m the guy that quit buying click pens at the office for this exact reason. Annoying!,!
Can’t wait for the ad interruptions during my upcoming oral exam.
Hehe, that’s you tube not us, but restroom/snack breaks are allowed during ground portion of checkrides!!
@@GiftAcademy no offense intended. UA-cam is getting worse. Great content, and this oral really gave me confidence in the knowledge I’ve gained. Cheers from the Rockies.
This lady is the best
Hello! I am new, i think that flight mainly depends of departure airport, weather and arrival airport. Its describe the profile of flight.
Thanks
I was screaming at the screen for the even and odd question lol
Was the DPE reading everything from the ACS?
YES! She was reading directly from the ACS and coming up with her own questions like all DPE's do.
@@drewleevy5420 I passed my PPL!
Ethan Shinn badass! Man congrats
so would this be a pass or fail? There seemed to be some issues regarding knowledge of cloud heights and other things that could cause you to fail?
Probably a pass. She's BSing her way around a lot of questions though.
Try the fuel pump switch during trouble shooting if you lost your engine in the fuel injection airplane
The amount of UHMMM and clicking from the dpe made me want to break my eardrums
If you are doing a Twin Engine Check Ride please make sure your "Cross feed Fuel Levers" are fully closed as one tank may suck fuel from the other causing possible fuel starvation ! One CAA Examiner distracted me by talking about the new Secretary at the Flying Club(she was gorgeous) then slightly opened a cross feed lever and I pretended not to notice ,1 minute later I did my "touch" drills reds blues greens anything that moved and reset the cross feed lever ! He also had a habit of removing circuit breakers to simulate oil pressure loss .....so be ready for it everybody ! NEVER reduce Manifold Pressure without adjusting RPM Levers either as it's a FAIL ! I never did this though but nearly upon deliberate distraction by CAA Examiner.
Mary has not taught or did multi engine checkrides, But I (her daughter tamara) do and hope to become my own examiner. Very few private initials would be in a multi anyways.. But very familiar with tricks to "fail" etc... I was sneaky... most of those wouldn't be allowed as an examiner lol.
This is excellent and a big help…
Thank you!!
Checkride next week nervous and confident at the same time.
Seriously! How’d it go?
@@loldailyvlogs9769 passed it. About to start my IR. Might be going back to school and use my GI bill
@@Sky95Puncher So awesome! I have my checkride on Tuesday!
Love the emphasis on sytems. Expect to go more in depth on your real checkride!
This interview felt so real I became intimidated. I have no flying experience. I haven't even started flight school. But the way this interview was going, it felt like the interviewee (future pilot) have been training for years. My question now is, how soon can a person with zero experience in aviation obtain the knowledge to pass "check-ride?"
Some flight schools advertise as little as 2 weeks.
There is a LOT to know. But, there are a LOT of resources. A lot of the knowledge comes from just doing it. I’d say if you focus full time on it a good goal is 4-6 months.
A few months. Don't worry about the fact that there's so much to learn - just learn it. Take a few hours every day to just engrave that knowledge. Treat the studying as a job and very soon you'll realize just how far you've progressed.
there aren't words for this video
Does the dpe cover everything or just the questions you missed on the written exam?
A few questions from every section of the ACS, then they either overlap or ask more questions on sections you missed
Nice video. It’s a shame that flying has got so complicated. Got my private in 1976 . A c150 was $15 and the flight instructor was $5. Examiner quizzed me about 20 minutes and we went flying. One of his questions was what makes the seasons winter, spring, summer fall. I didn’t know.
Most pilots at my airline don’t know either.
Do you know now? :)
Uneven heating of the Earths surface?
@@jasonmerrick4433 i think its the tilt of the earth and the orbit of the sun.
@@Dan007UT I guess my answer is in response to "What causes weather"
yes Dan G is correct. The earth rotates on a tilted axis. This tilt in conjunction with the earth’s orbit around the sun cause the earth surface to be exposed to more direct rays from the sun at different times of the year.
Amazing how when you look toward the sun in six months we will be on the other side of it and will have traveled about 470 million miles.
way too much talking from PPL candidate. DPE very good. Thank you both!
The tricky question about lose electricity in the night in interesting. But I don't think transponder will work if you don't have electricity. To be honest what is the best way to do?
I personally always fly with a handhold radio in case this happens. Weeds out some of the fear of losing comms!
Please stop clicking that pen

41:10 for everyone that’s wondering
So how do you dump the fuel? Plus I just paid for it to the tune of 6.45 per gallon. Your bag is not coming.
In an engine out scenario, one other thing to do, OPEN BOTH DOORS!!!!!
Excellent check ride. 3/18/2023yr
48:25 48 degrees Celsius what do you think we need?
I'd say an air conditioner.
Check ride for private, commercial, ATP, instrument, glider....waiting for the actual topic to be announced. Oh...there it is...at 1:38. Private Pilot Certificate.
Make sure you guys are keeping your answers straight to the point and don't add in fillers for your sentences. Felt like this could've been 30 minutes shorter without all the extra dialogue in between what the DPE was asking for
I like this video - i guess this is the best one - BUT the clicking of the Pen DRIVES ME CRAZZZZZZZYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!
I know in the actually oral you can’t teach but I wish they would say the answer or explain more when she doesn’t get it right on the dot. It would be easier to understand and remember rather then keep waiting till the end.
I don’t have time to watch the whole video. Anybody if this was a pass?
this was a mock test, but would have passed and went flying. the student did pass her actual checkride a month later
@@GiftAcademy what is the actual Oral like I've heard is the most nerve-racking thing you'll do
@@ericdroddy7444 it can be if you let it and are unprepared. but almost all the examiners hope to see you pass and actually attempt to lead you in that direction but only so far, maybe asking the question in more than one way trying to get the right answer. nerves get most unable to think clearly and then start just throwing answers out without thinking about it. never good, but you can actually stop and ask for a break, food, bathroom/ smoke etc.. take a moment to clear your mind and then start where left off, or if nerves get too bad ask for a discontinuance and then usually go home and rest well night before and finish the test. it doesn't have to be the most nerve wracking thing... but again remember the examiner is only there to see if your have your stuff organized and have at least the knowledge to go forth and be a learning and growing pilot.
@@cfimom or would you say your first solo could be the most intimidating thing ?
ERIC Droddy
Let’s just hope your DPE is nice like Mary here. That is half the battle. I had two checkrides with two different DPE’s in Florida and they were mean. Even more stress added. For the most part the DPE wants you to be safe, at least for the PPL. I would say this is a pretty accurate oral. Of course some questions may vary but they are fair. Just know your stuff, try your best, and remember that even if you fail there’s another day to be better. You can also ask around your flight school for tips and what was asked so you have an idea.
Now what boss!? ha ha ha ha I lost it there
"We have a little weakness" 😂
What did the debrief include? I would like to know the answers to the missed questions.
@BLKCFII mississippi where are you?
@BLKCFII feel free to email me. You should still have my email.
She missed a couple...like radio inop...transponder to 7600 ...Even and Odds + 500 vfr altitudes depending on heading etc
