- The display is now stable no matter how it is pivoted. 900+ solder joints reflowed !! VCO5 cleaned out completely !! I can't tell you which was worse. The goop or the bad solder. Both made this TS440 very unhappy. Persistence over time paid off !! The next steps are to get the transmit and receive working.

Thank you so much, Mike!!! The mention of a hard reset saved me a lot of time since I was not familiar with this rig and was asked to repair one with a very flaky display! Again, thanks!!!!
😀
So glad it helped !!
Hi Desert Mike, This series of Kenwood TS440S videos you did is a real gift! Many thanks for taking the time to video your progress and sharing your thoughts and insight on the radio. I have just completed removing the can and contents of VCO5 to clear out the microphonic glue as you do in your video. I reset the radio as you advised in your video and the display shows seven dots after initially displaying 14.00000. When I go to adjust T20 in VCO5 for 5.0V I get 7.85V but the voltage won't change when I rotate T20 back and forth. Could this mean VC01 needs to be cleaned up first? I have not started to clean that VCO can yet.
I think it would be a good idea to clean up the known problem areas before tuning. It's a pain for sure, but worth it. Document carefully where all of the components go, so you won't rely on memory.
@@mikep95133 Thanks Mike. I shall take care of VCO1 next.
Pipe cleaners to clean out the holes?
Go after the tx/rx switching circuit first which is all part of the pll section
This radio has 14 circuit boards in it. So many places to start.

Hi Mike, I wanted to ask you if you have ever repaired the ts-440s / at with problems of flashing dots instead of frequency and lack of audio can you tell me where you found the fault, maybe the tutorial, thanks 73 de ISØRAG
i am getting dots on my ts 690s de garth zs5gmw
I was going to buy one of these but watching this has scared me
Understood !! Many older radios that were made with mass production techniques all have solder problems as they age.
I've been thinking the same and about a 940 as well. I had one and it was awesome . . . 30 yrs ago!
Why dont you buy a solder sucker? Much easier
Got a make and model in mind ?
@@mikep95133 I just have a cheap one. Ill message you a pick of it on facebook. Thats how I originally seen your post
