  • Good day friends. I picked up a sweet old used Kenwood TS-440S a few months ago and have enjoyed it quite a bit. It's time to take it to the next level and get some digi modes rockin. I was surprised to learn this unit supports CAT Control and has some excellent audio input/output thanks to the AFSK In and Out jacks on the back. Making digi modes a sinch with only needing a few items.

    Thanks for the video! I’m getting ready to install the P8251A and 4040 chips after work today, and this is exactly what I needed to know. TNX & 73!

    Thanks for the video. I'm a new ham radio guy and the TS-440s is my first transceiver. I bought a CAT cable and the integrated circuits. Today the ICs were built into the transceiver. I've problems with the connection to my Windows 11 notebook...

    Thank you for the informative video. I tried the Signal Link with my TS400S without success. Your solution with the CAT cable and the Behringer U-Phoria UM2 worked absolutely perfectly with my Raspberry Pi. Your solution is absolutely the best for the TS440.

    This is a very nice tutorial, Marky. I bought the chips, the CAT-Cable and the UM2 and downloaded the needed software as you describe it here. When everything is installed I can start running FT8 on my old TS-440S. :-) Regards from DJ0MDC.

    It's really clear! I have followed your instructions for mounting the ICs. I have found an USB CAT cable, and everything now is working fine!

    That's a great mod for a radio with a few years on it. In fact, if a clean and cheap TS-440 came my way... My problem with FT8 these days is CPU power of the computer! I'll be looking for ya! - W3ENR

      Good to hear from you Ed!!! Hope all is well!!! You know, I tried using my brand new Raspberry Pi 400 with this task, and it was too dog slow! I couldn't tell if it was just a problem with the Pi, or the Linux distro, or maybe even fldigi, but it was unbearable. A project for another day will be for me to tweak the settings as much as possible and get it working efficiently on a Pi. Probably doesn't help having a waterfall running too. I was shocked how quickly I was up and running in Windows! Enjoy your weekend my friend!

      @@MarkyShaw I mainly use JTDX. I've overclocked my Pi 4b as far as it will stably go (~1.8Ghz), and it can't keep up with a busy band. But the truth is that an i7 Intel NUC that I have - a couple generations old, but still a quad core i7 - can't do it either. Watching the Pi, I know why. At least for FT8. It tries to cram most of the computing into those two seconds between transmission windows. So the Pi would just put-put along at 700mhz or something until the end of the transmitting cycle, and then the CPU would immediately max out. Problem was that it couldn't finish processing the signals in the two seconds it had. So I would get lag. A lot of lag if it was like 20m with 45 signals to decode. I think I'm just gonna live with the i7 at home and the Pi when going remote. It doesn't decode everything, but it still basically works.

    Good afternoon Marky, my name is Charles, I'm from Brazil, I would like to ask for help configuring JTDX to do FT* with the TS-450. I just want the JTDX to communicate with the radio and automatically change bands and frequencies. I will use two audio cables and the VOX function to activate the TX. Can you help me? Thanks.

    I have a Kenwood TS 950sdx and the Elecraft KPA 1500 amp. I also have the Kenwood IF-232c interface. What I would like to do is to get the amp to follow the band changes from the transceiver Is there a RS-232c cable to USB for connecting to my laptop that you are aware of? If I don’t have to use IF-232c, then is there a cable that goes from my transceiver (ACC 1) to USB for use with a laptop? I purchased a cable that had the 7 pin Din plug for the Kenwood transceiver’s (ACC1) and a USB on the other end of the cable for my laptop, but I can’t get the Amp to follow the transceiver band change.
    Thanks Dale N0JDA

      Sure thing my friend! This is an affiliate link! Feel free to check it out. It's a standard USB to Serial cable with the Prolific chipset. amzn.to/3o4AH0C hope this helps! Keep in mind you'll need the CAT control cable in addition to this serial to USB cable. I simply got the serial version of the CAT control cable since it's a little more universal for my tastes! Good luck!

    HI mate, would you have a walk thought pdf or doc to share, got the very same gear but I keep getting rig control error ?

    • @MarkyShaw
      @MarkyShaw  9 місяців тому

      Interesting! Usually the only time I’ve seen a rig control error is if the COM port selection is wrong. If you open up your Device Manager in Windows and expand the Ports section, unplug and replug in your USB to serial cable and double check what number it shows up as. Only other time I’ve had those errors is when I was transmitting and it caused my USB devices to disconnect because of stray RF and an inadequate counterpoise on my antenna. I’m leaning towards a com port issue in your case. Let me know!

  • @Rob.on.a.carphone
    @Rob.on.a.carphone Рік тому

    Hey Marky, can you list all software that would be compatible with this build? Also, can you use a USB to CAT Din6 Cable in this build rather than CAT Din to CAT / USB then to computer? We are looking at this and also doing the Panadapter SDR for the TS-440s, can you use both?

    • @MarkyShaw
      @MarkyShaw  Рік тому

      Hey there Rob, I can tell you that this build has worked great so far with just about any ham apps for Windows. I have thoroughly tested WSJT-X, FLDIGI , and Hamscope in particular and they all work great. In Linux, WSJT-X works well, but FLDIGI does not. Regarding the CAT control cable, they make a version that goes straight from CAT Din to USB on the computer. It basically has a built-in USB-Serial chipset in it. You can find them all over eBay. I personally like the CAT Din to DB9 version, but whatever works best for your application! I haven't tried any Panadapter solutions for this yet, but I've read that is possible with the right setup. Hope it works out for you!
