  • You are watching me replace the memory battery in my Kenwood TS-440 Ham Radio. I'm not going to win any soldering awards, but I think it will be good enough to keep this rig going a while longer.

    After the radio ate a couple batteries my elmer just ran wires to a D battery holder on the outside of the radio. It worked great. Gave the radio to a friend.

    Thanks for sharing your video!!! I have a Kenwood TS440 with the auto tuner. It was suffering from the dot issue, but only on the 10 - 15 Meters and 40 - 160. The 17 - 30 Meters worked fine. This TS440 belonged to a good friend of mine who passed away. Apparently he had tried to fix it and remove the glue, but while doing that he broke two different diodes. I had the replacement for one of them and now it works from 17 - 160, but still don't have 10 - 15. Of course that particular diode is hard to find, but I finally found it and ordered several. All I have to do now is after hunting season is over put it back on the bench and replace the diode in that circuit and hopefully the dots will be gone from that part. Right now I am using the radio since I mainly operate 20, 40 and 80 Meters. At least now I know where and how to replace the battery. Keep up the great videos my friend and hope to hear you on the airwaves again. Juddie - WD8WV

      Thanks Juddie. Mine had the tuner too but it doesn't work....I haven't tackled that yet. And I have some more work to do on the dots issue...the VCOs meet to be trimmed ad it's off frequency now. 73 and good luck with your 440!

    Thanks for the tutorial. Very clear instructions.
    I used the W09-0599-05 battery from East Coast Transistor parts. $14 shipped. Direct replacement. In my '440, Kenwood slightly sprung the battery tabs downward while the solder was hot. Solves the vibration problem without the annoying tape.
    Re: ESD (static) - who needs wrist straps? :) Just touch the metal chassis often. It also doesn't hurt to briefly touch the soldering iron to the metal chassis. Cheers!

    Thank you very much for a really nice video. That was exactly what was wrong with my TS440S. I thought it needed to be replaced but it was just the battery. Now it actually runs fine again.
    Many thanks from OV1AV

    I replace the battery in my ts-450sat. If I had to do it again, I would find a way to install a battery holder rather than soldering in a new battery and I would relocate the battery to a more convenient location.

    My 1990 R-5000 needs this. Already had it apart. Tight quarters. Also going to do a warm white LED panel bulb, mine's dead. Good info, Thanx.

    The maintenance manual is online and shows the disassembly procedure.I think you leave the bottom screws in and they are not taken out all the way to allow the head to pivot like on the TS 570.

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  4 роки тому

      I didn't bother looking up the manual and went by directions I got from a friend...I think I heard him wrong with regards to which screws to pivot on. Either, taking all 4 out worked fine...just have to be careful

    Well done. I may have to do this w/a TS-430 I'm picking up this Saturday. Just curious about soldering the battery itself: what was your temp here? Looks like even a second or two too long and you're going to injure the new battery.

  • @trailbossx2
    @trailbossx2 Рік тому +3

    I have the ts140s,,,I'm assuming the procedure is the same,,for dead batteries,,,so my question is,,,will the radio work normally, EVERY TIME, WITH THE RESET,,,,, with a dead battery,,,after doing the reset sequence,,,but WITHOUT changing the battery,,,,?,,,I realize, I'll have no memory, but it beats the 200 buck, battery replacement charge, for an 8 dollar battery, from kenwood,,,,,thanks,,,,,informative vids😎

    Nicely done ! Too bad they couldn’t have designed that better , but u guess how often would that battery really need to be replaced , 10yrs or something probably

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  4 роки тому +2

      They probably figured these things wouldn't hang around that long and didn't worry about it. As long as it lasted longer than the warranty period they were probably happy.

      I always felt that if the device, radio or computer required a battery for memory retention, the battery should be accessible and replaceable without tools.

      according to the manual, they expected it to last ~5 years and for you to send it in to them for repairs once it happened.

    i dont have any of the 3v type batteries with the side coverings like you have but i do have a stack of CR2016 and CR2032 lithium button batteries would the be ok to use if covering with tape around them there 3 volt button batteries so with care i would guess they should be ok. but would sooner check with somebody just incase

      If you can attach leads to it and put it somewhere it won't short to something else in the radio it should work....but I'm not a doctor so keep that in mind if you try this

      @@SevenFortyOne thanks yer ill take care when i do it iv also got the dreaded dot screen problem but i dont know for sure if its caused by the dead battery as the radio came from america and had been switched of for long while it did work ok for about a week i got an auto atu for it but couldnt get it to work seems theres two trypes one european one for usa and ironicaly the radio is a european model it was only after trying to install the atu that i developed the dreaded dotted screen i would tackle the vco cleaning procedure but parts are very hard to get in uk for lot of the earlier model radios so will have to go on major hunt for spare parts im hoping changing battery and doing factory reset might fix the problem even if for few months lol once again thanks and good vid id never found the battery housing without it

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely try the battery and reset first. I found that warming up the radio helped with the dots too...in other words if the room you are in is cold try it on a warmer room and see if the dots go away
