I've just bought a 99 gen 1 busa, after wanting one for the last 10/15 years. Never fails to put a smile on my face. Though I've had to do the later tank swap as the previous owner bought it off someone who had it sat 10 years with fuel in, killed the OEM external pump, not sure why Suzuki decided for the first 2 years to fit them instead of in the tank. so anyway, they had an aftermarket external pump that sounded like a Dyson, louder than the engine. So a later tank of the wrong colour and a bagster tank cover has sorted that for now 😅 looking forward to catching up this project, I remember watching you build it all those years ago. Learned the hard way that the fuel tap doesnt turn off too
Years ago i had a 1979 honda cb900fz used to lay it up over winter,then come spring that wouldnt run right at all.1 cylinder 2 cylinders etc,i put a new set of plugs in it and it ran like new.they used to "go off"during the lay up.strange.thats the only bike ive had over the years that did that. it was in the kitchen over the winter too?maybe the cooking fumes got to it ? haha
My buddy had an '81 CB900F, and every winter (Canada) we would put our bikes up in his garage. Come spring, my bike CX500Turbo, would start so quickly I wouldn't have time to take my thumb off the starter. It was like all I had to do was vaguely wave my hand over the button, and boom, insta-start. Poor guy with his 900, every single year, he would go through two batteries worth of draining, recharging, draining, recharging, and it would baaaaaarely start. We tried everything, never had luck. Bike ran awesome, but after winter? It did NOT like being woken up lol.
I guess that says a lot about the legendary reliability of Honda's, specially the CX500. and of course, how tempramental bike could be generally back in those days.. Thanks for sharing buddy, always good to hear from you. Take care. D&Px

Great back to basics diagnosis Del. Sometimes it's just tough to wake them up after a good nap. Glad it was an inexpensive fix. I bought one of those squeeze bulb hose set ups (meant for an outboard motor) years ago. Best money I ever spent. Best way to transfer fuel around by far. Del Note that the springs are the ones that caused the damage. There was a time when these springs were popular, a kind of protection and reinforcement for the pipe. Today, the fuel pipes are made with technology that lasts much longer than four years, but the springs you put back in place will still accelerate damage, isn't it?
So I'm not sure if it's worth going back and using them. But maybe I'm wrong?
Whatever today's technology may be, this bike's 24yrs old and even these new fuel lines are the original spec and designed to work with the cover springs... this wasn't a problem, it was inferior rubber hosing not fit for the job!
Well spotted that those hoses needed changing. Once fixed it should eliminate any problems on the road. Thorough work. Now the four cylinders bark like a MV Agusta race bike of decades ago. Hip hip hooray, Günter/Nürnberg

So true mate.. it's the best feeling indeed, i had concerns is was going to be a blocked fuel rail or injectors, but thankfully just fuel starvation due to those rotted out pipes.. lesson learned there aye ! Have a great week too and thank you as always for your awesome support.

I don't understand why number 2 wouldn't fire and then all of a sudden it did. I am assuming that's what you are saying and you are saying that bc all but number 2 pipe on the header is hot? Hope you or someone else can further explain. Thanks!
The fuel rail is fed between 3 and 4 injectors, so the pressure would have taken a while to build up in the rail to feed all 4 injectors, not only that, it's likely they themselces were a little blocked and just need some time to clear as it warmed up... they came back to life when they were ready.
I've had issues with 2 of the 700 and 1100 1986 Honda Shadows. Hoses constantly blow… been waiting for replacement past few years. I had to modify it temporarily. I'm skeptical of aftermarket hoses. Win some and lose some.
Specially with modern ethanol rich petrol, it's prudent to replace the fuel lines every couple of years, that stuff rots everything!

Congrats, Del, and nicely assessed. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to get anymore than 2 cylinders to fire on my Fatboy! It’s very frustrating! Speaking of stripping down to her underpants and new hoses, my neighbor helped me retrofit my MIL’s undercarriage with some really cool steel-braided hoses. The grinder and sparks scared her a little, but a bowl of kibble seemed to distract her just enough. She barely leaks now and we’re thinking of letting her come in the house on occasion. Hope you both are doing well! 🏍️👍🏍️

Good call on the braided hoses, study enough to hold the tonnage and being shiny they add a little distration..! Sensational… I have been meaning to ask, and apologies cause it was ages and ages ago.. Can you remember where you got the two oil line adapters from for your custom hose? I’m getting tired of dropping the line every oil change so I can get to the filter. A different oil line and angle would make a difference. I know it was ages ago, so don’t stress over it. Cheers ❤
From memory mate, i got it direct from Earls themselves, told them what i wanted and they sorted it out, sent them in the post.. Like you i wanted a tidy install.

A useful bit of advice to add to your comprehensive and well made points Del - don't swing on the oil drain plug either when replacing it. The last 'mechanic' that changed the oil on my Bonneville must have been a serious weightlifter with a long breaker bar - A real performance freeing it off - use the torque settings in your manual - I speak from bitter experience!
Yep, had to take the breaker bar to a few over the years, no need for it but there you go.

And be especially mindful of what fuel hoses you use these days with the increased ethanol content of modern fuel. Old hoses plus ethanol is not a good combination.
As i mentioned in the video, these hoses are not permanent, but to be replaced every 4 years as a service item.. but as the bike is 24 years old, that's out dated advice, like you say, with modern ethanol in petrol, better to replace them even sooner.!
