What makes this even more special is that base jumping in yosemite is super illegal. Not only do they have to hike all the way up there with their gear undetected, but they also have rangers patrolling the base in the mornings looking for people jumping and will come arrest you at your landing if you can't pack up and run away fast enough.
Thats why people do it in the evening when rangers aren't out there like in this video. It makes it even more dangerous due to low visibility.
They dont arrest people in commiefornia please

It takes a special kind of person to not alone climb that but to throw yourself off into the nothingness. All while most people haven't yet even woke up and descended the stairs. Major respect to the madness and determination involved.
Its not determination, its an addiction to the adrenaline and rush that motivates them.

A little reality injection: Skydivers have some sort of injury every ~400 jumps, whether that be a slightly twisted ankle or something, or worse; most being on the less injured side of things. Chances of dying while skydiving is about 1 per 50,000 jumps and skydivers with more than 1000 jumps are few and far between (I have 700, fwiw). BASE jumpers however die at a rate of 1 per ~500 jumps, so you're about 100 times more likely to die BASE jumping than you are skydiving. I don't know the statistics on BASE injuries but I would guess the same ratio would probably apply. BASE, by the way, stands for Building, Antenna, Span (for bridge; B was already taken), and Earth as in cliff. One other major difference between skydiving and BASE jumping is that these days, with ultra safe equipment, as long as you stay well within the safety envelope your chances of dying are very, very small. Now days it is mostly the more experienced skydivers trying to earn cool points in front of their friends that kills them. With BASE though, you have one chance for everything to go perfectly. Parachute (just the one) opening on time, on heading if you're off of anything but a bridge, and landing in a clear/safe area. Every time or you're dead. One of my favorite things to do skydiving was to be the last out of a Twin Otter with 20 jumpers on board, and dive head down at 200 mph to catch the formation, flaring out to slow down to the normal 120 mph to come in for a nice soft dock. Or maybe jumping with a camera and hanging off the "floater rails" of a King Air and timing when I let go just right to get the group I'm filming in the frame just right as they exit. A high performance parachute with a fast landing adds to the thrill (though that's one thing that kills a lot of hot dogs now). But BASE jumping? Hard pass for me.
Wish theyd kept it as bridge instead of span we could all be BABE jumping.
this was a cool read, thanks

In May 2004 a group of us assembled to rappel El Cap on a single 3,000 ft rope. When we all arrived we had a team meeting in the meadow at the base of El Cap. Half way through our orientation meeting we were startled by the sound of a BASE jumper's chute deploying. We watched him sail to the back side of the meadow and scurry off into the woods. It was so cool.

Okay so I was wondering, if you sleep on the side of a mountain, do you take a shit off the side of the mountain as well? Or do you save it for up top or whatever?
You pack that shit out man! Climbers poop into a bag called a "wag bag" with some kitty litter and throw it away after the climb. Same goes for pee. On these super popular routes like half dome.
@@jordannesbitt1939 thanks for answering!
@@dezeman8062 Since these comments are so fresh on such an old video, Ill add on to what Jordan said. It used to be common in Yosemite for people to just chuck their poop off the wall in a paper bag. As climbing the walls became more popular (and people became more ecologically minded) this stopped in favor of poop tubes. People make PVC capsules not to dissimilar to tubes at the bank drive through. They then pack this out as Jordan said. Part of the "Leave no trace" ethic.
I used to smear my feces on the rocks so when climbers put their hand on certain rocks they would get a surprise!

Not sure who's crazier. Awesome video.
What's funny is I think the guys climbing the mountain are crazier than the guys who jumped xD
There are cables up the back side so you don't have to haul all your wingsuit crap up the face - it's still pretty hairy, the back side is steeper than a roof.
When I got there, I could not crawl on my belly to within 6 feet of that edge - some birds were doing a mad freefall dive trick, using the updraft.
It would have been weird to watch the wing suiters jump off, it is taken for granted that there are always climbers below.
It’s crazy to think that people make a whole pilgrimage to this rock, and it’s less than an hour drive from my house
Because it's gorgeous and breathtaking, I live 6 hours away and have only seen it once about 20 years ago, I would seriously love to go again in the future. You're lucky 👍
That's how I feel with astrophotography. I live 20 minutes from super dark skies and people come from halfway across the country to shoot where I take for granted.
Funny how this seems to be the case for museums, tourist attractions and sites of natural beauty all over the world. City people often mention how they've never been to whatever major attractions their home city has, despite others traveling from around the world to come see them. For me, that's the Statue of Liberty
I flew across the country to see it last summer. An absolute spectacle. Worth every cent.
Wingsuiting would be a blast. I've skydived twice. I'd love to try it.
You people realize... We are the weird few who decide if this blows up.
Awesome Video! Really Inspiring dude 💯
quite illegal, if a ranger catches you they have been known to confiscate the parachute. I've heard that this has led to several deaths. One case where the jumper didn't use their main chute because they knew it was going to be confiscated, and the one they did use didn't open right. Another case where the jumper grabbed the chute and ran from the rangers. He tried to swim across the river and didn't make it. Water is very unforgiving! :( Have fun, but be safe! Thanks for posting the video! very cool seeing
The park would make money and increase safety by just opening up a permit system. I think some of the issues come with people jumping at less than ideal times to help aid in their get away
And people know the risks stop ruining it for everyone u fuck
are parachutes that expensive? i thought you dont use em that often

Hang gliding is allowed in Yosemite. The United States Hang Gliding Association worked with the park to develop rules for governing safe hang gliding operations there to mitigate risk to pilots and to avoid environmental impact due to the Hang Gliding Activity. Hang Gliding has been active there for several decades. All boils down to following rules. All launches have to be early in the morning. Pilots had to be rated at least level 4. This rating is put forth by the United States Hang Gliding Association with ranking 1through 5. To gain ranking, one must keep a log of flights. The more flights you have as well as showing certain special skills observed by a United States Hang Gliding Association designated observer, advances you through the rankings. I am a Hang 4, and flew Yosemite a number of times. Beautiful experience. We are only allowed to fly early morning to avoid mid day thermal activity. So flight might last 20 to 40 minutes. I can remember launching and flying along one the the steep faces and seeing a couple of climbers that had spent the night on the steep face on some little sleeping rack things. I yelled over to them, "Hey, you guys are crazy"!. They responded back with "you are crazy"!. This was back in the early eighties. I am now 68 years old and still hope to get another flight there sometime. Keep on climbing!
