  • If you are having problems with your Apple Silicon Mac, your first line of defense on Apple Silicon Macs should be macOS Recovery. But if for some reason you are having problems with that you can boot your Apple Silicon Mac with a Big Sur USB installer drive. I wrote an article covering all the changes to macOS Recovery here.

Order of that you should follow for reinstalling macOS on Apple Silicon.
    1. macOS Recovery
    2. System Recovery - (Will boot automatically if macOS Recovery is unavailable)
    3. macOS Big Sur USB Installer Drive - (External boot for macOS Installers is enabled by default on Apple Silicon)
    4. Apple Configurator 2 REVIVE option - This option will reinstall macOS Recovery (retains user data on the SSD hard drive)
    5. Apple Configurator 2 RESTORE option - This option will Reinstall macOS Recovery, ERASE your SSD hard drive and reinstall macOS
Apple has just posted a new articles on macOS recovery, booting to DFU mode and how to restore macOS Firmware.
This video is is for the following Apple Silicon Macs

Recovery mode has changed on Apple Silicon Mac! I it's not Command R anymore, Apple has made the process really easy now. All of those commands are gone. Let me know if you have any questions!

Now I want that as my Open Core boot picker to look like that. That looks pretty good, and I want to be able to use it on my 2012 MacBook Pro.

After I erased the disk, and continue reinstall Big Sur, I got this error: "No users available for authorization". Do you know how to fix it? Thanks.

Brian, this means that you were using an earlier version of macOS Big Sur Beta. This was a problem in beta but was resolved in version 11.0.1.

@@Mr.Macintosh I tried keeping shift pressed and it didn’t work. I found an article from Apple that you need to keep power button pressed during the startup and after you get to the control option you need to press shift but that didn’t work either. Hope you find how to boot a M1 Mac with safe boot. Still looking for it. Thx.
