  • I put a 300 watt solar array on top of my golf cart to help charge it. I used all Renogy components and it was very simple to install. I used their 100 watt panels (RNG-100D-SS-US) and their Rover Boost charge controller (RCC10RVRB-US). first I built a solid mount to secure the panels to, so I built an all aluminum roof frame. The panels are mounted securely and provide shade to the driver and passengers. Then I mounted the charge controller and wired everything together. I get about 15 miles of charge per day on average.

    wow I am working on same project with 3x100W i was going to put on my ezgo! I needed three panels to get enough voltage to charge 36V. But now I also found a cheap solar booster charger. And I can charge higher voltage batteries than my PV voltage. So i might just put one panel.

      Thanks for watching! I would recommend going with the 3 100 watt panels. One panel will work, it just won’t put out enough power to make it useful.

    Outstanding shipmate. Press on. USS Kitty Hawk CV-63. Jan 1980 to July 1983. Solar power Golf Cart lover for life.

    It seems like using these for golfing where the cart sits a lot compared to how much you drive it would always be charged.

      I thought the same thing until I was educated otherwise. I had a friend who headed up a project at a golf course and business park to set up golf carts with solar panels and data loggers. Long story short there was no return on investment and that was if everything worked exactly like it should. That was about 6 or 7 years ago so things might have changed by now.

    How's the charging going after some time? Are you still using them or have you changed it?

      Thanks for watching the video! The charging setup works well. It been over a year and I am happy with its performance. There is one flaw that I need to fix. I mounted the charger under the seat in the same space as the batteries. The charger is air cooled which exposes the circuit board to the gasses vented by the batteries when they are charging. This has caused some corrosion on the board causing it to malfunction at times. I need to clean the board and pot it in epoxy to seal it from these gasses.

    Beautiful set-up but requires welding that I haven't learned to do. . . Yet.

      There are methods without welding, aluminum slot profiles and bolt connectors but more expemsive.😊

    Any updates how did it do for 100% charging as well as load balancing?

      It does great! It does best for short trips, as it can charge up in a full day. When the batteries are discharged deeply it may take several days to charge up completely. It seems to charge the lead acids just fine. They are all balanced nicely.

      @@themellowmechanic Thanks for the reply, I was thinking you would need higher watt panels and higher amp charging , nice job on the design and solar panel frame.

    Nice build, would you have done anything different if you had to do it over again?

    • @themellowmechanic
      @themellowmechanic  6 місяців тому

      Yes, I would have added another solar panel making it 400 watts. It looks like it would fit if the frame was just a bit longer. 300 watts works perfectly fine though!

    Can you post links to the panels and controller please?

    What kind of controller?

      Depends on your engine voltage this was i guess 36v brushless dc controller.
