The commentary helped me understand many of the mechanics of this game that have flummoxed me over the years since I got this game and my N64 back in Christmas of '99. Mostly those regarding the engine upgrades and pit droids.
This is easily one of my favorite TASes ever. I've been wondering what perfect play of this game, taking all of the fastest skips and shortcuts possible, even the unintended ones, for over a decade before I found out that TASes were even a thing! It was super amazingly exciting and suicidal all the way through! The developer commentary was also very informative. Thank you so much for this work of art!
Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed the commentary! If you want to see more TASing action of this game, the SWEP:1 Racer speedrunning community has made a few individual course TASes you can check out. Check the submission notes for a discord link.
@@Wolfenstein1942 This comes down to the TAS having a less healthy top speed upgrade for the first race, therefore being slightly slower compared to the run you are talking about. The gameplay in this TAS is immaculate.
This video was rendered with a modified framebuffer (4k), so the resolution is much higher than an N64 would actually output. The textures however are courtesy of the N64 Expansion Pak - the game had really impressive texture quality when it was present.
Sadly I couldn't accommodate this in my TAS, but do a UA-cam search for "winning boonta classic 40 seconds of stalling" and I think you'll be pleased with the result! (links get caught by the spam filter sometimes so no direct link)
Wow, I never knew a game I played in my childhood could be this elaborate, I guess I'll have to grab it again on steam. 😁 Edit: You know it's a TAS when the engine catches fire at 20:52 😂
I dunno, I beat it pretty easily on the Switch, all courses even though it had been years since I finished the N64 original, then again it could just be that the difficulty was turned down a notch
@@kaihedgie1747 there is one hard track in this game, that is 4-2 the abyss. I mean, it's not 'hard' it's just bullshit. If you fall off the upper catwalk (and it's really easy to fall off) it's impossible to win, as the bottom catwalk takes you through the scenic route that's twice as long. And you have to do this 3 laps in a row. I beat this one using Mars Guo. It's a bulky racer with slow turning speed but this is exactly what I want for this track. Slow down on that catwalk and pass it.
Very cool! I also noticed you can launch outside of the walls on the one cloud-city like stage. Came here to check to see what absurd paths could be taken. Nice job! Kind of curious: is it not possible to hop up onto more slopes? maybe they are too steep?
There are all sorts of out-of-bounds tricks that can be done that I didn't do in this TAS! You just have to have better upgrades than I was able to acquire for some of the maps and so I wasn't able to do them. I don't know all of the skips personally but if you check out the ep1 racer discord you can find info on loads of 'em.
Hello, That's awesome! I played this game a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) And I bought it on switch recently So I had a question: Can you please, if possible, update a run in ~"FIRST POV", like a FPS (I prefer the view without the engine personally)... Or at least, juste a track ? That's more difficult to control, but when you play like this, the sensation of speed is increased and I very like it (when I'm not eating a wall at full speed^^) But once again, that's incredible, and thank you again for this TAS run !
Hello ! Very nice work, one of my favorite video ! But can you upload a video with the "front view" only ? (The front view, not from the cockpit) I'm playing this game a lot and the "immersion" is better And if you have other videos on other tracks.... Please UPLOAD !!! ps: front view + mini map if possible
So what is this category: "finish the last track in the game, from a new save file" or something? From what I remember there's a shitload of races in a full playthrough so that kind of TAS might not be feasible but I'm not really sure I understand what's being shown off here, sorry.
It's any%, which means get to the credits as fast as possible from a new game start. The only way to get to the credits in this game is to complete the Galactic Circuit, one of the three initially available circuits. Completing every race in all 4 circuits would be a 100% playthrough, of which a TAS does not exist (yet).
@@absolutetrash7880 Nope, this TAS is brand new - the Executioner skip isn't possible without upgrades and especially with N64 physics. The Dethro's skip was actually only discovered a couple months ago!
This is the third TAS in a row that you have commented a timestamp of when an encode goes Public. This is borderline spam. So either talk about something relevant to the TAS or don't comment at all.
So many good memories playing this as a kid. Amazing tas!
Yea, serious blast from the blast vibes.
Now THIS is podracing!

It is still a graphically impressive game for the N64, imo

Oh yeah, there's going to be a lot of that
Drinking game challenge?
I used to play the hell out of this game when I was younger. Beat every track eventually. Amazing to see it pushed to the limit
This is one of my favorite racing games on the N64. I loved every minute of it. ❤
Great run with great commentary!
I played the hell out of this game 23 years ago on pc . To this day one of my all time favorit games . And damn your tas is out of this world!
The commentary alone made it worth it, thank you.
Very impressive work!
At some point I'd like to see a TAS of "Rogue Squadron" for the N64.
Ideally a 100% All Golds run
Not using Anakin on the Boonta Eve Classic? What a crime.

Never could beat the last 3 tracks

this game, rogue squadron, and shadows of the empire were some of the best n64 games. lucasarts rocked

A reference maybe to Zelda Williams?
I'm kind of curious if dual-controller mode has any tricks that'd let you go even faster.
I never thought these tracks were longer when i played it before but now it just sticks out.
I thought this was going to go crazy like with trackmania. Instead this is just virtually flawless game play.
That was so wizard!
This game was so fun, but goddamn, does it get hard. Seeing the turns this tas does just gives me anxiety.

For what reason did you use Elan Mak?
It's possible to run the game, it's possible to be good at the game, this is just an example of using the force while playing the game.
