there is a geological formation up the Escalante river in Utah, long ago engulfed by the rising water of Lake Powell as it was filling in the early 1960's. It was beautifully depicted in Eliot Porter's photographic work, The Place No One Knew, which documented many sites that were soon to be engulfed. It is called Cathedral in the Desert. I discovered Debussy's piano La Cathedrale engloutie at just about the same time '63 ... forever linking the beauty of the location and the music played so well here.
There can be no life without water; it is an absolute. For me, there can be no classical piano music without Helene Grimaud. Here she brings her unequaled talent to this program like water to a parched and thirsty land. Thank you, Helene.
I first heard this piece of music when I was about 8 years old... and it haunted me and still does some thirty something years later... so moving, so beautiful... and she has played it here so enchantingly, it made the hairs stand up on my neck and my eyes water... just perfect...
Fresh interpretation on a great piece, her playing is as always impeccable. And she gives something to the piece. Which is more than you can say for most pianists who seem to think dinamic markings and phrases should be played like it sounds on a computer notation software. Honestly this is my favorite interpretation of this piece.
Beautiful interpretation. Very soft even in the middle, but Grimaud makes this work well. I love her tone and phrasing. Her 2 against 3 at 2:38 is wonderfully done, and it's hard to get that just right.
I agree, but honestly I don’t think this 2 against 3 is even close to challenging for her (and I would say for any professional pianist )😅 Still, I love her interpretation, which is the major difficulty here

How interesting! I like the orchestra version of this music. I always imagine it as battleship Yamato at the bottom of the ocean. Then modern exploration submarines attach large balloons to Yamato. The Balloons fill with air and the ship lifts from the bottom of the ocean. As the music becomes louder, Yamato rises faster and faster, until its prow breaches the surface of the sea. The ship explodes out of the ocean, and water sprays everywhere because of the impact. Other ships all around look at the great old battleship float again. The golden chrysanthemum at the front, still shining in the sun.

I don't like it at all. Her interpretation has completely missed the dynamics and so as a consequence the climax that arrives somewhere around the second minute has disappeared.
I agree. And the phrasing is disjointed, the tone erratic. Debussy's extraordinary piece simply falls apart. This is a great disappointment. To hear how Debussy's piece can be played I would suggest the performances by Reine Gianoli or Yvonne Léfébure, which were uploaded to UA-cam in 2012, but have been heard far too infrequently. Or Dominic Piers Smith's 2007 performance at the Yamaha competition. All get it wonderfully right. Edward Kilenyi's 1950 recording is remarkable. And of course there are always the absolutely astonishing performances by Cortot. Or the superb performances by Gieseking, Arrau, Nelson Freire, Michelangeli, Richter, Pletnev, Zimerman. The Debussy piece has some truly magnificent interpretations. It is very sad that this is not one of them.

Benchmark performance
Possibly the worst performance I ever heard of this piece.

Too much rubato, and too fast some places. Apart from that, very nice touch.

It is very sad that this is not one of them.
c'est l'intro qui te perturbe ?

No! Too objective .and harsh. Where is the poetry?
Larkenfield Rofl yeah ok
What agressivity ...
This interprétation coming from Hélène Grimaud should be softer normally 😕
