This piece is a deep poem of many sonic splendors. It can sound like random improvisation or "exercise" when played mechanically by pianists who are aloof to the spirit Debussy created in it. You, Pavel Kolesnikov, have the rare spirit, the emotion, artistry and heart to evoke the beauty others miss. Thank you for stirring my soul . I also appreciate this fine Steinway Concert Grand, which obeyed your virtuoso touch, allowing your playing to "sing" so beautifully. (A mediocre or poor instrument will hinder, not properly express.)
Im sorry Pavel Kolesnikov! I started to watch your video but your playing was so beautiful, I closed my eyes and was transparted into the depths where I was floating next to the Engulfed Cathedral, listening to it's watery bells. Your playing is exquisite. Thank you!
I am curious about the (as of this writing) three down-votes. I am not a professional musician, but this is a piece of immense subtlety, and it seems to me it was performed quite sensitively and attentively and skillfully. I also appreciate the video production: a full view of the performer at work, and for all the subtlety, the sound is brought out quite nicely.
There are many reasons a few "don't like." (1.) "Taste" For example: I do not like "Rap," (in particular when the most often heard word is f- - - -. Nevertheless, I appreciate that others do like rap. (2.) Ignorance or rudeness. (3.) Jealousy regarding your virtuoso skill; and other "reasons," none of which change the fact that Pavel Kolesnikov is in a rare, elite group of stellar artists.
I think overall its very beautiful, but I don't like how he speeds up so much during the "emergence" Also during the shift to key of E. He rushes this so much. The music says a little less slow. Not played this fast. It's all interpretation, but this is way to fast in a few sections.
@@noahthomas77 Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I think I hear what you're saying, although for me the jury is still out. While you're here: is there a performance you know that you'd particularly recommend?
My favorite song . 🍎 Thank-you very much to your profound and solemn performance from effulgent Tokyo in profound Japan . Deep impression was reaching my soul .
I have heard recordings that are almost two minutes longer than this one, it seems the tempo varied quite a bit on this piece but confess I like one that moves along at a somewhat brisker pace. Nicely played.
I believe Debussy encouraged the artistes to interpret his works on this way. I wonder what he would have made of Isaho Tomita's version, which I feel fits the legend rather well.
Is pedal down through the entire FF section normal? I read the music as only the low C should sustain while the rest is legato, maybe the sost pedal for the C while the rest is pedal on the beat? Am I doing piano wrong lol?
Wonderful performance - & similar length to Debussy's performance. Some are just too ponderous. I think 'engulfed' is such a clumsy word in this context. 'Drowned Cathedral' is much better or maybe 'Sunken'. Sounds more romantic & evocative somehow. Just a personal thing.
This Debussy work had been used as example in the italian youtube cultural video "Lezioni di Musica - Armonia" of the channel "musicamonteverde". Is a really very very interesting video of this new interesting channel. I know that many will not like to see criticism but I'd give this performance an overall 8/10. The reason is because during the section in forte with the continuous bass C, I felt the notes were bashed a little rather than being played fully into the keys. However apart from that I like all his other interpretations, especially the muffled ending with the rolling bass notes. That really felt 'submerged'.
I wonder if you prefer one over the other? I feel Tomita's piece fits the legend and the spirit in which Debussy composed the piece rather well. I wonder what Debussy would have made of Tomita's version.
@@marcopederzoli4939 interesting. The original came out in 1981 here in the United States but there was also a 1997 version called escape from Los Angeles. It’s the 1981 that has the Synthesizer version of this piece by Debussy
Manque de profondeur dans les brumes. Notes pas assez assourdies. Les résonnances " Debussy" ne sont pas ici. Question de climat !. Manque de mystère sur un tel sujet bien que l´approche soit en place. A approndir ...
I can not help but admiration has occupied my whole heart .

butt hurt musicians who probably played this but much worse, that's who
Or they don't like this particular version ? Or they don't like more " modern " music

Nicely executed.
This amazing young man reminds me of John Ogdon. His "pianissimo" is wonderful, yet he can be strong and aggressive too.
