That little thing is called a hose clamp.

I recently bought a Manfrotto tripod that had a ball head on it that was screwed on real tight and was impossible to get leverage on. This tip helped me to get it off and saved me $50 to buy a new center column for my tripod to mount a new head on, thank you!! I found a Manfrotto tripod with the head attached. There were 3 screws underneath and someone already took them out. I still cannot separate the head and tripod. I may have to try this. I don't get why they won't separate. Thanks for the tips

Cool tip tho! I'm not sure if they changed but Bogen / Manfrotto head tubes mounting base has 2or 3 set screws from under side that catch those ridged teeth on bottom of your head so it can't unscrew. On mine (3051 & 3036 Tracker) you loosen the set screws and grip entire head in locked position to unscrew.

if this doesnt work and you want to keep the tripod and not the head.. put the head in a vice and then stick a screwdriver through the hole in the bottom of the central collumn and use it for leverage, worked to get some absolutely solid on for me...
