I feel like people should wash their ass & feet regardless of getting a tattoo or not. That's why soap was invented

When he said that tattoo artists shouldn't be tipped if the tattoo is already really expensive for some reason I felt a sense of relief.
Haha wish I had known that before, but also idk if that's universal or just this guy.
I've tipped $300 for my $1,800 half sleeve.
I had the other arm done in Europe and went to tip and the guy straight up told me it was too much.
Kath R my brother tipped $300 for a 2,000$ tattoo so you’re not alone lol
yeah before he wrote that I was about to write, that I'm not gonna tip the guy after I paid 2400€ for my Tattoo, now that I read what I wrote, I sound like an asshole...
@Steph Daigle 20% of $1800 is $360 though? So they tipped around 17% of the price of the tattoo.
Some crazy tips
The wash your butt applies for everyday in every situation, nothing worst than to smell the person standing next to you!!

finally an american tattoo artist who says tips aren't expected!
i wouldn't confirm an unwillingness to tip on tattoos because pony lawson says in a youtube video that tipping on expensive pieces isn't expected. when you're paying 300 an hour for 2x2 portraits you're in a different ballpark than the shop minimum bammers you and your 6 friends want at 9:50 on a tuesday.
@@trashman7787 my point was that contrary to pony, most usa artists usually expect tips no matter the tattoo, its size, or the artistry it took.
i'm european so i'll always be surprised by usa's tipping culture.
@@Selene666 same here, I'm European and no one expects tips. It's not even something that is discussed. It's not that we're cheap or don't care for the artists work, it's simply not in our culture at all. We get surprised with them and they get surprised with us.
@@trashman7787 if you want $150, charge $150. If you charge $130, don't expect $150. That's a logic that somehow makes no sense to Americans.
@@noelleirina5628 exactly, charge what you think your time and work is worth in the first place. I understand the reasoning behind tipping waiting staff in the states, because they're criminally under paid. That's not their fault, but the fault of their employers not paying them a fair wage and the fault of the state for not setting a minimum fair wage for them to be paid.
But a tattoo artist should just charge what they want to receive, and if their work is really worth it, then people will pay it. If not then perhaps they're over estimating how good their work is.
That black bar down the back one is really cool.
MISTA ikr, I wish I had a clean back to do something like that with.

I totally agree with him on the tipping part. If your artist really is giving you the best deal they can, you should give them a tip. Most tattoo artist aren’t rich and tips do make a difference.
But if you’re getting a tattoo from a famous artist who’s already charging you top dollar, you might as well save your money. The tip is like crumbs for them, they really don’t need it.
They really don't need it, nor should they expect it I would hope. Tipping isn't really a thing here in the UK, but I think if I got something small and relatively inexpensive I might chuck my artist a little extra. I've only got one tattoo so far though and spent over £600 on it so didn't feel a tip was warranted 😁
As an artist I think tipping is great but not necessary. However if it’s a peice where I spend 2-6 hours drawing and designing outside of tattooing time then the client should realize that and tip accordingly.
@@melissabrouwer9899 or just charge a rate that takes the design into consideration?
@@H0n3yMonstah people already cry about prices ahead of time...
@@truthless8261 tough shit then. You can't afford the rates, don't get a tattoo. Equally, charge what you think your work is worth. If you've got an awkward customer who's trying to haggle down the price before they've set foot in the shop, do you really expect them to tip at the end?
"I don't like in person consultations because I might forget what we talked about" that's weed for you hahaha
Yeah. I'm torn about that. As a professional artist, I do on the phone or in person consultations all the time. People want to know what they're getting. Then, I follow up with an email of what was discussed and they confirm or adjust the agreement. As a tattoo client, I had a tattoo artist recommended to me. I made the appointment and looked over his book. I wish I'd met him before hand, because he didn't communicate the disagreement he had with the design, which was mine. He just jumped in with changes at the tattoo stage. He didn't tell me he changed it(it was on my back right shoulder, so I couldn't see it while he worked). He had a couple of earlier red flags I should have caught--like starting the $ per hour clock from the appointment time. I was on time and he was 40 minutes late and acted like nothing was wrong. Didn't say "Hi. Sorry I'm late" or anything. I said "You're not charging me for the time I sat in the lobby while you were late, are you?" He had planned on it, but I asked the owner if it was normal to do it, and he took that time off. Funky vibe too. Not in a good way.

Tipping a tattoo artist seems so silly. You're a professional, don't be afraid to charge what you think you're worth. Don't lower your prices to get more people in the door and then get butthurt when they don't tip.
Yeah! You're not a waiter, you can determine your own price. It's your job to calculate it!
I think is a matter of appreciation. Like with your nail technician or your hair stylist.
@@CatalinaEnSa The difference is that tattoo artists don't make minimum wage. I don't mind tipping someone in the service industry because they don't get paid well, tattoo artists make fucking bank, a decent bit more than i make, i think its just silly to tip them on top of that.

Good to know. I do tarot and there are tarot decks made by tattoo artists, I would just give them that.
I think when you give them stuff, thats called a gift.
it's kind of fun to find out how the tattoo industry is in America, as it is so different here in Denmark. you don't tip for tattoo's as the artists normally own the place, or pay % of there earnings to the owner, or pay a certain amount to the owner each month, and then it is up to themself about how many days, and customers they want each day. (some places ofc may do it differently, but those are the most common ways to do it)
That's how it works in north America still tip though 🤷♂️
brodie braun fair☺️. Dont know what the “normal prices are in America. Aswell. So dont know if that has something to do it aswell. As here you wont find any shops who do it for less then500dkk/h ( around75$) and in Copenhagen the Capital city its around 1000dkk(150$+ for a hour ) so it would very quickly be a very expensive to give the 15-20% tip here
Kenny Hylleberg Snebøl that's around how much it costs here. Tattoos are quite expensive :(
So, how do the workers make money? Are there only one artist per shop?? P.S. I always wanted to go to your fine country.. fresh air & a non racist leader!! Win win ! 💜
Kenny Hylleberg Snebøl Tips are not expected especially if it’s a really expensive piece already
Love this dude. Right to the point, gives all the right info.
This style of questions, as well as them reacting to their old tattoos/other things is awesome. I hope future ones are like this.
Love how seriously they take this. Really makes me want to plan out any tattoos I get.
Never been a haggler. But I've never understood tipping a tattoo artist. Unless they're going out of their way for you. They should set the price based on overhead and what they the art is worth.
Exactly hell I don't understand tips at all I live in a country where tips aren't a thing and it's illegal to pay your workers in tips as well I never haggle for a tattoo I often pay a little extra but that mainly cause I don't want to break money like my most recent tattoo was $475 I just gave my artist $500 flat cause it was easier for him as he didn't have the correct change and plus he did a FANTASTIC job on my piece I legitimately cried so I was happy to give him that extra cascash but I wasn't required to and he never asked I just did it cause well it was easier for him to keep it then to chase him up later for it
James Quinn ... you said you didn’t understand tipping, and then completely explained why you tip at the end.
When I got my first "big" tattoo we had agreed on a price, however I ended up deciding on make it way bigger.
The guy started saying "well, we agreed on a price, so I'm sticking to it".
But he did such a spectacular job that I just asked "how much is it?".
Paid the additional price, didn't regret it one bit.
Artists, specially younger ones, feel very insecure about charging it correctly.

I encourage those who cannot deal with the pain to take a shot or 2 , but I agree more than that can have a variety of negative effects on both the client and the artist

@@georgetaylor5202 wouldn't it be better if you took a regular pain killer ? Not aspirin, bc that might also be a blood thinner... But maybe acetaminophen ?
Yeah same goes with antidepressants, I'm on them and never had an issue with getting tattooed but do mention to your artist that you take them so they can take it into account. As I said I've had no problems getting tattooed while taking my prozac but there are artists who maybe do have an issue with it. Don't feel ashamed, just tell them upfront.

That line down the back is so f**king AWESOME!
I'm surprised to see all the hate around tipping. Now, I only have two tattoos, but I tipped my artist well after both of them. He's an awesome guy, does great work, and I was happy to give him a little extra for a job well done. I think it also puts a little bit in the "goodwill" bank for you. My artist knows I'll treat him well, and he reciprocates...whether that be giving me a break on price, or just putting in the extra effort to make sure the tattoo looks the absolute best. I take care of my artist, and he takes care of me. To each their own, I guess, but I'm a good and grateful tipper.

Tipping must clearly be an American custom, my artist has never once even hinted at being tipped.
it's a north American thing. During WW2 (might have been 1, I forget now), when they couldn't afford to pay people properly, they started using tips. When the war ended, some businesses decided that they could save money (make more profit) by not returning their employees' pay to what it had been - paying them less and making them make up the difference with tips. Many places expect you to tip so they they do a 'tip out' (all tips get combined and given to the whole staff - waitresses, kitchen staff, etc. If you don't tip, in this case, you're basically making your waitress pay for your food). It's a sucky thing to do to people. In Asia, I don't know about Europe, it's considered rude to tip because they pay their employees properly.
@@sweetmissirish and this is why I dislike America because apparently I'm the asshole for not tipping when it's not my job or responsibility to pay for my waiters wage through a tip that's his or her employers job to make sure there staff has an affordable livable wage that is the responsibility if the employer and business not mine as a consumer thank fuck I live in a country where it's actually illegal to pay your staff in tips
Yeah I don’t tip but I come from a Mexican family and it’s not really a thing in Mexico, so I’m not really shameful about it. But some of my friends do get embarrassed when I don’t tip so I will pitch in at those times
I had my tattoo appointment last week and ended up getting so sick the night before where I was puking about every hour 😭 I felt so bad cancelling with my artist but I’m glad he understood and was happy for him to take my whole deposit. I’m still upset that I had to cancel just because I know it affects him, but I didn’t want to risk getting anyone else sick, or me getting sick while he’s tattooing.
Pony have that chill about him. Seems to be super approachable and friendly.
The black bar is amazing
What is it with the tipping culture in America, damn
Olga Madura I think it’s BS to be honest. It all depends on where you work and the customer base within it. I’ve know servers who make $300 a night off tips. Then these servers would turn to management and say they were only tipped $180. They then fall in a different tax bracket and never tell a soul about the $120. It happens A LOT more than people let on.
It's savage dude. You are expected to tip for so many things. Sometimes it's the only way service workers make any money then in other jobs it's just a bonus.
Yeah. It's ridiculous -- the tipping culture here. It stems from businesses paying low wages. And the customer has to make up for the shortage by way of tips. I dont mind tipping (gratuity) my tattooer, but when it feels like charity...that's no bueno.
I really dont care if i tip, you dont need to tip most places just places where you have a server, all the rest is optional.
its called no living wagws
Thank you for saying the thing about tipping! I feel the same way: If you're spending a few hundred dollars to a grand on a tattoo, you shouldn't be expected to tip...you're already giving a shit ton of money. I've never heard people talk about mandatory tipping as much as I have the last 5 yrs or so and how much you're a pos if you don't tip your artist. I get it and I agree with tipping, but you shouldn't have to be expected to do it when you're already paying a shit ton. You're the only artist who I've actually found that agrees on that.
His advice on tipping is the best I have heard. If you’re paying 150$ an hr and a tattoo is 8 hrs. You shouldn’t have to tip cause the artist just made a lot of money off you since ink and needles aren’t much money at all. Or that’s the boat I’m in. I do vehicle wraps on cars and that’s a skill and a art in its own way and have never got a tip but I also charge where I don’t expect a tip
On-point and very professional.
As an artist my biggest peeve is
When someone dosmt say something about the design until it's done and I cant fix it.
I LOVE what I do I dont mimd the extra half hour fixing the design if you dont like it speak up man!
So what would people complain about afterwards? Shading ? Linework ? Because the design itself has to be approved before you even get started, right ?
So my second tattoo is so horrible because of this and I know for most people it’s like duh what they showed you is what you get but we had talked about so many details and she told me she was doing an outline so even though I didn’t really care for the sketches I thought it was just for placement purposes I didn’t realize I was getting exactly what she drew and now I hate it so badly
I really like this video. Down to earth no BS kind of artist. Tattooing has come so far in recent years, and it with technology too. Good to know the easiest way for a smooth appointment and session for both parties.

I've been like best buddies with all my artists even the "intimidating ones" cause they're usually the biggest softies
Generally the more "intimidating" a guy looks the bigger the softie I have a mate who was in the military and he had to team up with a 10yr serving soldier so he picked the least intimidating and soft spoken person then they were doing battle awards or whatever to commemorate deeds in war and the guy he teamed up with once slit the throats of 17 enemy soldiers while they slept and he told my mate after the awards he enjoyed killing those 17 people so it goes to show you can't ever judge a book by its cover

I don’t get the philosophy on haggling vs. tipping:
Artist: This is the price. Don’t ask for lower.
Also the artist: This is the price (but please give me more than that).
Ikr i give tips but it's kinda weird when he put it next to eachother
Didn't you hear him say to not tip the artist if the price is high? If it's low then we should tip them, if it's high we don't have to
Yo you are missing my point, which is the price quoted should be honored on both sides. If the artist sets the price at $600 but really wants $700 in anticipation of a tip, why not just set the price at $700?
The way I see it is tips are extra. Like he said, tips are nice but not expected. So they give the price they expect. If they do a good job, you can give them a little extra in appreciation.

"Weed is a plant and if you just so happen to set fire to it." I wanna say it was Kat Williams, but could have been Chappelle.
It's a drug but a cool one
Even herbs are drugs. If it changes your perception or makes changes in your body it’s a drug. Not all drugs are bad even food is a drug not just processed foods but all foods. Weed is a useful drug. Stoner culture can be harmful because they know so much about the drug but are clueless and glorifying. It’s a wonder drug but it’s still a drug and yes people can have adverse reactions tho you can alter your diet plan and fix your chemistry and slowly introduce weed but not always. Also some people have over or under active cannibanoid systems. Let’s be scientifically literate but also non judging. Let people smoke or not smoke. Tho being high while getting a tattoo should be a case to case basis
Exactly
@@bstmeg5237 I don't think getting tattooed whilst stoned would be all that pleasant. It would make the session feel never ending.
I WISH i lived in america i would go straight to this guy, he seems so down to earth and i feel like it would he a really fun chilled out session
Depending on where the tattoo is, I can have issues with second skin bandages. I have a light scar just above my knee from a particularly abrasive brand of second skin, so I usually wear it for the first night and then I have to remove it the next day (unless it’s a gentler brand, then it might hold for a couple days). If I leave the harsh bandage on then I will get welts and sores all along where the edges of the second skin covered, and that leaves me healing two areas - one of which will burst and ooze. Again, speaking from experience and knowing my body.
It's crazy how some artists charge out the ass for their tats. I've had someone charge me $250 an hour and someone charge me $100 an hour and the $100 was much better quality and was much lighter with his touch. Price for a tat means nothing. The artist is where it's at.

A woman once approached Picasso at a restaurant, asked him to draw on a napkin and she would pay him whatever he felt it was worth. After he was done he said “that will be 10,000$” shocked she said “But you did that in 30 seconds” to which he replied
*”No, it has taken me forty years to do that”*
Just because you can’t afford a certain tattoo doesn’t mean that the artist is worth what you are “willing” to pay. Like he said, you get what you pay for. I will never understand why most people think it’s okay to try to make a deal with artists. Have some respect.

Hearing that “Nobody likes a haggler” line gave me Ninja flashbacks
Note: Tipping is only normal in America. If you are viewing this and you are not in the USA, tipping can sometimes come across in a bad way and can actually be a negative thing. I was raised partially in the US and got my first tattoo in the US and tipped as per custom. But when I got a tattoo in NZ and tried to tip they got really upset with me. The same applies for England and most other European nations. Tipping is primarily a US thing. If you are not sure ask a friend from the country or ask someone with a tattoo who appears to be a local. Tipping CAN be offensive to some
Tipping for things like those is crazy to me, where do you draw the line? Do you tip your plumbers? Your supermarket employees?
The only real reason tipping is 'required' is when they're not making a livable wage, usually as a waiter or waitress. Artists can set their own prices so don't need a tip at all

I was just saying that can't really be a #1 tip to tell everyone because not all artists are okay with their client being UTI of anything so younger people don't just show up to their appointment like that
@@kaiaalfhild3642 They said "that's *my* #1 tip", as in, they're speaking from their own experience with tattoos. Obviously some people are going to prefer being sober in the chair and if that's your thing, great, but not everyone can handle sitting still in one position in pain for seven hours without some help. That's why I recommended talking to the artist about it beforehand.
Artist approved 👌👍
Yay Bruce the cat!
I tip whenever I can because my guy is a friend and he's always been good to me with setting up appointments and giving me what I want out of the tattoo, but if I'm already dropping $400 for a session, sometimes I just don't have that extra cash and he understands.
Very straight forward answers
My fullsleeve is almost done, around 2000-2500$ in, but i dont know if i want to tip after spending that much on my arm. Maybe buy him some whiskey or something, because i like him, but thats all. What do you guys think?
Fragmented That’s pretty sweet
How satisfied are you with it?
As for money I would look at it the other way. $2000 is quite low for a sleeve. I am half way done mine and I have spent $3000 so far. If your artist has cut you a deal you may want to tip more to show appreciation.
My artists have always rounded down on their hourly. It's a show of good faith from them and I like to tip to show appreciation for that.
Definilty still tip
@@rect7840 I love it. It has a few problems, but its not done just yet, and none of those problems are permanent.
its a LOT of money in my country.
He works on a hourly rate, there was no deal, but I always pay him for every started hour, even if we are just 10-15 minutes in.
Tipping here is not much of a thing, but I rather be nice, who knows, maybe i'll come back in the future.
Talk to him about it, find out what he likes and use that info to find something he'll like. IMO, gifts like that show appreciation for the artist way more than tipping with money because you took the time to find out what kinds of things they like and get them something more personal.
🙌🏻🤣 I like him he’s dope 🤪
I don't know the pricing concept in America, in my german town all the Studios have a basic charge per hour, which is around 120€ to 150€. Even if the tattoo takes 30mins, you pay by the hour and that's fine. It is a basic charge per hour and it will increase depending on the shop, the amount of work the artist has to put in and if you add colour. Therefore I do not find it inappropriate if you ask your artist about the estimated price but of course in a normal conversation, not like you're trying to get the last item in a sale.
Also tattoo shops here are by law supposed to turn you down if you show up drunk or on drugs because tattooing is counted as assault and if you sign a contract under influence you can argue you were not able to make clear decisions and can sue them.
Ive once haggled my way into making my tattoo artist accept a tip that was practically more half of what the tattoo costed. It was my first tattoo and barely felt it, I think it was deserved lmao
