  • Hello Again, I've decided to make a video regarding the common leaks on these popular BMW models/engines. All information is off top of my head from learning about these engines over the past 4 years. If I've forgotten anything, or if you've got questions, feel free to let me know.

    Another great vid. I'm in the middle of replacing all my vacuum lines on my M54. I've had the car (e39) for about 1.5yrs now and knew the low end power was off, rebuilt the DISA, cleaned the ICV and replaced all the boots and most vacuum lines with just a few more to go and the car is running better than ever.
    I would strongly suggest everyone replace these things before they need to be replaced if your car is over 80k miles. These engines create so much heat that it's not if they going to go bad, but when. Same goes for the cooling system. If it's rubber or plastic you will be replacing it. Gotta love bimmers ;)

    Interesting, the FPR is actually built into the fuel filter on 330ci model here in the uk! I did a filter change, within one month the new filter fpr actually bust a hole in the diaphragm inside the filter and sent fuel up to my intake where the vacuum for the fpr comes from, was a smokey mess!

    • @OLearysBMW
      @OLearysBMW  Рік тому

      Yes, same here in the US. M54 cars have the filter as part of the fuel filter. M52TU cars have it separate from the fuel filter, some other countries the M52TU cars have the FPR directly on the rail.

      @@OLearysBMW I'm in the middle of overhauling the cooling system (everything up to the firewall), ccv components and all vacuum lines, and sealing the oil leaks, oil housing gasket, droppin' the subframe for that oil pan gasket, vanos, etc.. Since the intake manifold is off, figured I'd be replacing the decades old sensors, knock, camshaft, crankshaft position sensor, incl. the alternator, starter, power steering pump & hoses, DISA, idle control valve, injectors, sparkplugs, fuel filter, etc. And now that you've mentioned it, maybe even that plastic valve cover. Then I plan to service the transmission after all that is said and done. ATM, I don't think I feel like dropping the transmission to replace the rear seal on the engine....we'll see. All the parts are on order....and they're trickling in.

    Germanium sealing technology is severly lacking, have they improved any I wonder? I'm about to get stuck in to a 2003 530i that's been sitting for roughly six years, it belonged to my customers aunt who sold it to her nephew, my customer for 400, the battery was replaced but was stone dead when I arrived to try and get it started, it took a fully charged jump box plus a jump from a vehicle to sufficiently crank it, she finally came to life and blew big cloud of blue smoke put but she ran good for sitting for so long. When I got to it I removed the cover on the bottom and it was filled with oil, I'm starting with the valve cover and will go from there. When he first told me about the car a couple of years ago he uttered those famous words, the only thing wrong with it is, then I finished, the only thing wrong with it is that it leaks oil, he said how did you know, I said because all BMWs are leakers, I worked on my next door neighbors 2005 x3 and the same thing, it would leave a puddle of oil whenever it was parked, this one I'll be doing has 92,000 miles on it, overall for the year and considering the cheap materials they use plus it never being in a garage it's not in bad shape, pretty much zero rust which is surprising for a NJ car, I don't think she drive it in snow I started by changing the oil but it was a bit disconcerting that there were three empty bottles of oil in the trunk, thus ought to be fun.

    told the fella in the parts shop earlier might as well just a buy a box of brake cleaner ... but yeah chasing stupid vac leaks.. and chasing slow oil leaks .. my guess was oil filter housing gasket, vgc kit, and do the orings upgrade and washers on any of the vanos/oil stuff .. what do you think of using a boost gauge to test the intake for vacuum leak? just a idea i was playing with.

    • @OLearysBMW
      @OLearysBMW  3 роки тому

      That would be cool, to see what vacuum the engine is creating at idle, etc. Vacuum is most abundant in a crankcase typically under two conditions, idle and deceleration.

  • @TooTallT

    What's your view on m56 valve cover on m54? Seems like it would resolve many issues regarding cracked valve covers ccv vacuum leaks and possibly boost crankcase pressure to better seat low tension oil rings.

    • @OLearysBMW
      @OLearysBMW  2 роки тому

      Hello, I enjoy seeing the M56 valve cover used in turbo and track car applications, where they're vented to atmosphere. From my findings after having 3 SULEV cars at the shop, the intake manifolds are always much more dirty on the inside versus the standard M52TU and M54 intakes. The original CCV design lasts over 100k miles. Same as valve cover, replace them once with OE or OE equivalent and you should never have a problem again under your ownership. To aid in low tension oil control ring seating, I recommend applying the O2 Pilot Mod to CCV.

      @@TooTallT if you're going supercharged I seen guys retain a sealed PCV system using appropriate PCV valves. When turbo though, vent to atmosphere or vent routed before turbo are typically best.

      Hello! I can't remember off top of my head what the thread pitch is (maybe M6x1.0? or something along those lines). I'd figure out the thread pitch then attempt to remove the bolt that is broken. Then chase with the right size tap or next size up, use appropriate bolt depending on which tap you use. Just be careful with the block while tapping, they're soft.

Or go bsxk to old tb maybe?) But i also dont think its my MAF. Im trying to get inpa to work.. having s lil trouble doing it in a virtual machine but i think ive almost got it downloaded... idk.. if u know anything i could look at that would stop the pedal from working?
