    It's not on topic, but I want to say that before I started watching your videos, I originally wanted to stick to basic ingredients and stay away from processed stuff. I saw it all as synthetic and bad. I was going to sell people stuff that they could make at their house with ingredients they could walk in a grocery store and get. You've made me realize that there is so much more to this than I thought. I love the way you teach and I love that you are not scared to be open about what you know. Thank you so much. You have taught me so many things about stuff that I didn't consider would ever be a part of my path. But now they are.

    A huge thank you to you, Marie, for this wonderful recipe, this exceptional channel, and all of the material you put out there to help educate us on product formulation. This is a wonderful gift to the world! I made this recipe three times and I would like to share my experience and impressions. I made three 20 oz batches simply to use up the butter pearls and Vitamin E as much as possible. I bought the BTMS-50 and Butter Pearls from Simply Ingredients. The Vitamin E MT-50 is from New Directions Aromatics. I didn’t have plans to use these ingredients for anything else, so I increased the size of the recipe to maximize their use.
    I melted the heated phase in a pyrex cup in a 450 F oven for about 20 minutes - beware: the liquid heated phase was vaporizing (it looked like steam) and I had to turn on a large box fan because the vaporizing oils were really irritating my throat and causing it to close up. I stirred the melted oils, then put the pyrex cup in the refrigerator, checking in on it and stirring every 5-10 minutes. The heated phase started turning cloudy around 200 F. I added the Vitamin E at around 140 F. Trace occurred at around 95 F, I poured into molds, and put the molds in the freezer for an hour.
    I applied these lotion bars to my hand when they were still liquid and noticed that they were oily-feeling. After taking them out of the freezer and popping the bars out of the mold, I again noticed the bars were really oily-feeling. Because I hate oily/greasy lotion bars, I decided to make two more batches, adding white kaolin clay at 10 and 20% for a less oily feel. I know this can also prevent the bars from melting.
    So, I made the recipe above two more times: once with the as-written recipe above constituting 90% and white kaolin clay constituting 10%, the other batch was the as-written recipe above constituting 80% and white kaolin clay constituting 20%. For both batches, I added the Vitamin E at around 135 F. Interestingly, the clay made the oils cool down much slower. I poured into molds right before trace, while constantly stirring, around 100 F. Pouring right before trace helped a lot with the pour. If I had waited for trace, the bars would have solidified during the pour and they would not be flat in the mold. They would have set up before I had time to tap them down.
    Verdict: The cocoa butter smell is great. I love that these bars do not have beeswax, because this means they don’t have the same issues with drag as regular lotion bars have. The bars feel smooth and glide on easily. There was no grittiness to any of these bars.
    As mentioned above, at room temperature (and even at lower and higher temperatures) all the bars (the recipe as written (0% clay), the recipe + 10% clay, and the recipe + 20% clay) are oily-feeling and I did not want to further the experiment by adding more clay. The 20% clay recipe was less oily than the 0% clay recipe, but still too oily for me. With 70% cocoa butter, I should not have been surprised by the bars’ oiliness, but I was still hopeful this would not be the case. I know BTMS-50 from Simply Ingredients is 50% cetyl alcohol, 50% behentrimonium methosulfate, so I was hoping for a less oily feel because of the cetyl alcohol.
    Also, I experienced an allergic reaction to the BTMS-50, which was not fun. My skin broke out in hives. So, I will be melting down these ~23 bars and using them in soap making. I am not sure how BTMS-50 will react with sodium hydroxide, but we will see. 🙂
    Thank you again, Marie!!

      @@thelifeofcentered I subbed with candelilla wax. You can also try carnauba wax. But I’m going to try again with rice bran wax. It has a higher melting point than all of them, but supposed to give a less waxy (though my bars weren’t waxy) feel than the plant based waxes and has emollient properties.

      @HumblebeeAndMe  Рік тому +10

      Hi Ginger! I've had zero issues with cocoa butter clogging pores over more than a decade of regular use. Do you have personal experience with it being problematic, or are you referring to a comedogenicity chart and working off that?
      If it's option 2, I'd encourage you to re-consider that strategy, as whether or not something clogs pores is not as simple as looking at a chart and eliminating every ingredient above a certain number.
      LabMuffin has a great video and blog post on this: labmuffin.com/fact-check-how-to-use-comedogenicity-ratings/.
      If it's a known personal sensitivity, substitutions are always detailed in the free partner blog post. Happy making!

That's why I also have a giant page of places to shop all over the world, which you can find here: www.humblebeeandme.com/resources/. It doesn't have every country in the world, but it does contain all the online stores I know about. If your country isn't listed, that's because I don't know about any online stores in your country. Will this trace + freeze technique help with the inherent crumbly-ness of Kokum Butter as a butter bar?
    And, can dimethicone be added to a body butter bar given enough fatty thickener/hardener to accommodate it's liquidness? I know Cupuacu Butter would probably be the better option for that silicone-y slip, but I am trying to slip in some occlusiveness too; I wasn't sure if dimethicone would affect a solid bar's cohesiveness

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Рік тому +1

      Trace won't help with crumbly-ness, but softening kokum with other ingredients will :) And yes, you can include liquids in body butter bars, just not very much. Here's an example: www.humblebeeandme.com/green-gold-body-butter-bars/.
