    Al, I owned a private NH waterfowl hatchery. I never put waterfowl and chickens together.They were constantly feuding! The geese absolutely hated the laying hens. There was peace in the land when I separated the birds...Do you have any mesh under your raised beds to discourage moles/voles? Love your raised beds. So much easier.

    I left the Boston area a long, long time ago. I grew up just minutes by MTA from downtown Boston and worked there when I was in my early twenties. But quite a long time ago I headed for the rural life also. I've never wanted to go back but I do enjoy living several hours away in New Hampshire so that I can visit Beantown now and again for museums and theatre.

    I love watching your weekly update! Everything is coming along so nicely and I love how enthusiastic you are about the relationship between the different aspects of the system. I hope the pumpkins grow enough for you to win the #homesteadpumpkinchallenge! How tall do the green beans grow? What will you be using to stake them up on? Great update!

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +3

      The beans we are growing will be around 12 inches tall and they dont need to be stacked. One of my favorite parts of farming this way is how everything works with each other and makes each other better! Good to know you like the updates!

    When you butcher the cockerels this weekend you could move all of the pullets for sale into the same tractor and free up one of the tractors for the ducklings. Also, why not advertise Mr. Biggs to be sold as a package deal with those barred Rock pullets? He could be moved in with them as soon as you have the cockerels out as well. He would also help stop any arguments between the two batches of pullets. That would allow you to move Rufus into New Yolk City and get him set where you want him to be and your Icelandic project would be off to the races.

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому

      That is a really great idea! Thanks! Mr. Biggs might not like it but I bet Rufus will!

    Gina: A bread alternative might be crepes/wraps . I make mine in the Wok; for 2 eggs, two tablespoons of alternative flour, pinch of baking soda. Rice, tapioca, pea, lentil, potato ( give potato flakes a buzz in the processor ) or mashed, etc. Add milk to make a runny batter; pour a thin layer 1/8" or less into a hot skillet with Vegetable oil or Ghee ( clarified butter ). I use Ghee; then rolled up and cut in strips in my fried rice dishes. Or pour over a 1/4" layer of finely chopped vegetables, peas and shrimp; Egg Fou Yung or any omelet style dish. Adding a little starch will add body. Over a 1/4" layer of frozen peas, corn niblets, grated potato, and tinned corn beef or bacon bitts would also make a full meal pancake. Happy cooking Bert

    • @MrScoresby
      @MrScoresby 7 років тому +1

      PS I have also used the wraps to make individual pizza's. Just add toppings and cooked them on the stone in my Delonge toaster oven. Bert

    Given the opportunity, your chickens will kill every one of those ducklings. That's why the ducklings have been hiding under the coop. Often times we had to separate mother hens and their chicks from the rest of the flock as the other chickens would peck the chicks to death. Chickens can be nasty, and as you've pointed out, will each just about anything. In this case, however, it is more likely an expression of the "pecking order" behavior.

    I feed my sourdough starter and Laura to grow on the counter for about an hour hour and a half maybe two. Then you put it in the refrigerator. You won’t experience molding. Then take it out once a week discard part feed it do the exact same thing. And take that discard feed it and make your sourdough. I’m 70 I’m learning my husband and I been studying it and loving it

    Can't say I am impressed with the new style dry hatch incubators. I had a Sears redwood 400 goose egg incubator. You could dry hatch, as long as you didn't use the bottom water tray. It hatched hundreds of show chicks for a neighbor without a hitch. Looks like these new models are reinventing the wheel... Not sounding encouraging for me, when I get ready to buy another wet hatch incubator. Best of luck. I will follow your hatching venture to see if you have success.

    I'm really amazed the chickens know how to get water from the device you use to water them. It would be educational if you showed the process of pinching the extra growth on your tomatoes so people just starting will know what to do and why they need to. I think it may help people be more successful which will encourage them to keep growing. Thanks for the great video.

    Our weather has been wonky too. I finally just tossed my sour dough starter too. (SD) Potato bread is awesome, just be sure to rice the potatoes. Great job with the garden. You ought to use a tea on your garden. David the Good on UA-cam shows a very easy way to make yourself a tea with stuff good for the garden. Good Luck with your garden! Oh, on your zucchini & squash, if you don't prune down some of the leaves, your flowers won't get pollenated. Which will cause your fruits to only be female, that means they grow a little then die.

    I really enjoy the Friday updates. The gardens look great, especially the hay bales, potato, pig pen squash. Sad to see those male blossoms, it's been some time since I've had any, and soooo yummy. Exciting about the chicken harvest. I'd be interested in the net weight difference between the Cornish, and Barred Rocks. Sad to see about the duckling, but good luck catching them to move to safer quarters. ^Edit^ No updates on your beehives?

    @8:41 Hay Dude you just pulled out a lambs quarter, I know you like salad and that plant is the original lettuce. It has much more nutrition then lettuce, it can also be cooked as a green veggie!!! Up until the 1960's lambs quarter was a staple on most dining tables. It wasn't until refrigerated trucks and trains came along that lettuce appeared in the grocery store!!! So go ahead and try it, you just might like it!!! The young plants are best!!! ;-) p.s. lower right hand corner of the picture, is a nice young lambs quarter.

    Al, do you take deposits for your meat birds. I know when we did it, we had an issue with people backing out a lot. And I didn’t have the freezer space to store up birds. So we set up a preorder process with a required non-refundable deposit. We pre-sold 85% of the birds and the rest went on a waiting list (this was the only deposit that was refundable in the event that there were no birds available.) the wait list covered us in the event of not everyone making it through the growing season. With the exception of one raccoon during an opportunistic electric fence failure one year, the rest made it.

      Spent hay is hay that is ready to turn into compost. We had ours in our winter chicken coop, so it was pooped on and then we sat it outside for a few months to get rained on in the spring

    Hey Al, remember when i sent in a comment wondering about raising ducks? Well now i wonder if we need to clip the ducks wings so they dont fly away, or are they fine to fly?

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому

      I do. I don't think the ducks are going to fly. They haven't tried to yet. Thanks

      That wood heater system Cottage craft works .Com. 1300 for all but the pre heat tank. Carrots in the bales and radishes.. Straw berry's keeps them off ground. More rings of bales more compost. Your doubling grass and kicking....

    Ducks need a swimming pool. It's too hot for them, even in spring. Plus what is needed for digestion. We learned the hard way too the first year. Keep the pool out or pond until fall.

    I would get the ducks outta there Al . . . Chucks are too much dinosaur to trust them. With the head missing tho, it could be a neighborhood cat; mine always preferred eating the head. A cat could climb the tree, drop down, climb back up and out. Hey for non-gluten bread, try grinding up some split green peas. They make it a fun color and add tons of protein. Thanks!

      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому

      That sounds like a great idea to add to bread! The chickens havent been touching the ducks, I dont know what it is. Thanks

      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому

      you are right but when I am around I dont see them chasing the ducklings at all. The ducklings run in and out of new yolk city city limits too (the fence)

    • @eaglegoldengate4184
      @eaglegoldengate4184 7 років тому

      I am not certain that the chickens aren't involved but can't see them just eating the head . . . Seems like the chickens, if hungry would eat bones and all. The carcass is only missing it's head.

  • @thebackyardchickenfarmer2914

    You should probably put the mama duck and the baby ducks in a chicken tractor

    I think it's a really bad idea to have those duckligs with the "main flock". Why don't you set the ducklings and the mamas in a chicken tractor or something? Your channel is great.

      Thank you, They ducks went broody under NYC so I wanted to see how they would do raising them naturally! Not GOOD! :(
